Trouble

Chapter 8

*Zyana's POV*

I was so freaked about what I saw. No. Nononononono. I was not going to let this stupid A person ruin my life! I know what I did was wrong. I didn't even do it though. I was just helping Courtney! But still, I was a fellow accomplice and that still means guilty. How much jouvenile prison is that?
Does it even have prison time? Or just community service?

I shook my head as I quickly got up and grabbed an old box from a secret compartment in my cupboard that no one else knew was there. I hid the photo and the note in the box. It was kind of like a little mini safe that I once bought for myself in case of emergencies, and for once I don't regret buying something weird I found in some flea market in our street.

I opened the box and put the picture and note in it. I was just about to close the box when I saw something ever so small, glistening in the small rays of sunlight peering through the window in the early autumn weather. I'm lucky my room gives out on the part of the small meadow to the side of our house because the sun always shines brightest there.

I took out the small locket as the chain fell slightly out of my grip. I felt a chill run up my spine when I opened it, tears immediately rushing up to my eyes.

Inside it was a picture of me and my dad. My dad held me on his shoulders with a tight grip as I clutched his head with one hand and his shirt with the other. I remember that day like it was yesterday, even though I was only six.

I was always very small for my age and people presumed at that age I was only three or four, but I always giggled and told them I was six, the person looking surprised.

The day the picture was taken we went to the park in the city. Even though it was very crowded, there was a little park just outside of the city with an ice-cream stand that my family and I used to visit every time we went.

Of course I always chose raspberry, Louis vanilla, and my dad chocolate chip cookies. My mom used to eat ice-cream but she hasn't eaten ice-cream in well...a very, very long time.

It was hot that day so we all sat playing hide and seek in the park when I always hid in the trees.
But not just any tree, it was always the big oak tree in the middle of the park with the beautiful pink blossoms.

I would stand under the tree for a while just gazing up at the sky trying to catch the soft, pink petals as they floated down from the sky. I gathered a few and always put them in my room in a small glass filled with water, because I just loved to look at them float on the water, never sinking, just the magnificent, fragile little petals floating on the surface. Magnolia pink on the very inside, soft pink on the outside.

I climbed up the tree and I figured my dad would never find me there because I was up so high, but I refused to hide anywhere else so of course he always found me dangling my legs from the branch high up in the tree, always the same one.

My mom used to worry herself to death trying to persuade me to come down but dad...he knew I was too smart to let go, and he knew I always found the perfect spots to put my hands and feet so I could come down safely.

He would always climb up halfway up the tree, sit on a branch, and wait for me as I slowly made my way down to where he was and just sat down next to me.

That day, we even stopped to look out at the city, just a tiny little speck, looking so insignificant in the far distance. If you listened very well, you could always hear the loud noises of the car sounds, and so many lights changing, sky scrapers towering up ever so high in the sky.

He gave me the locket I was now holding in my hand, adjusting it so that it would fall right onto my chest next to where my heart was, saying that whoever I decided to put in the locker would be close to my heart, forever. I made him a promise that it would be him in that locker, forever.

Later, after we climbed down the tree we played tag in the field. My mom always used to stop to take pictures, but only on the days when the weather was nice or on special occasions.

I was running away when my dad caught up to me and swung me over his shoulder, placing my little body onto his shoulders. We both laughed as my mom shouted at us to look her way, so she could take the picture.

All the memories came rushing back to me, tears rolling down my cheecks and I remembered my promise. I never broke a promise no matter what, so instead of putting the locker back, I put it around my neck.

"I promise daddy."
