Scarlett’s POV

As I sat in the back of the taxi, I kicked myself for not packing another blouse in my purse, just in case. Definitely going to be on my packing list all the time after this. Instead, I was left to use some napkins I found in my purse to soak up the coffee. I reeked of the stuff and I was sure my wool coat would be partially ruined.

I couldn’t let this mishap ruin my day. I was only moments away from the rest of my life, after my first paycheck, I could just buy myself a new coat.

After going through all the napkins I had in my purse, I realized trying to get the stain out would be a lost cause. With a sigh, I balled up all of the used napkins, preparing to toss them aside when I arrive. My only hope was that whomever I was working for would be understanding when I explained to them what happened.

Before I knew it, the taxi was pulling up beside The Kimberly, one of Manhattan’s finer hotels. Whomever it was I was working for, they had great taste. It had a great view of Central Park, I was lucky enough to go inside when I was doing one of my internships a few semesters ago. The designer I was working for had a client who was staying there and I had to deliver her outfit for that night’s event.

The taxi driver pulled my suitcases out of the trunk and I paid my fare, giving him a few extra dollars for a tip and wheeled my luggage into the lobby of the hotel. I walked up to the main desk, unsure of what I should be doing.

“Name?” the snobby clerk stated without looking up from the computer screen.

Normally, I wouldn’t be fazed by such rude behavior, but the fact that I wasn’t entirely sure if I even had a room set up for me left me feeling flustered.

“I um, well I don’t know if it would be under-,” I started, rambling through my nervousness before I was cut off.

“Name.” Obviously this person had something up their ass an wasn’t interested in my story.

“Scarlett Hawthorn.” If they wanted to be rude, I could be as well. I just prayed that my name was in there somewhere. How embarrassing would it be if I was giving this person sass and I wasn’t even in the system. The longer it took for her to say something, the more I start to worry, but I tried to not let my nervousness show.

“Twenty-ninth floor, room 5L. Leave your bags and someone will bring them up shortly.” I was handed the key to my room. Was it my room, or would I be sharing? I couldn’t imagine getting my own room, that would be insane. As I made my way into the elevator, I eagerly pressed the button to my door and waited as the door closed.

“Hold it!” I heard someone yell and I quickly pressed the door open button, hoping I got to it in time. As the doors opened back up, I was face to face with none other than Harry Styles and the Kardashian from earlier. His eyes quickly shot to the stain on my coat and he frowned, seemingly remembering our encounter from a few moments prior.

Quietly, I stepped to the side, making space for the couple, praying this elevator ride went by as quickly as possible.

“Harry, let’s just catch the next one,” she said, wrapping her hands around his arm protectively. At first, I assumed they just wanted to share a private moment in the elevator, so I didn’t think anything of it until the door was closing and I heard her final remarks. “So she doesn’t follow us to your room.” I scoffed, rolling my eyes and folded my arms over my chest, leaning against the wall in a huff. Those two needed to get over themselves.

The uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach resurfaced once I made it to the floor, but after taking a few deep breaths, I felt a little more sure of myself. As confidently as I could, I walked towards my room, sticking the key in the lock. Nothing in the world could have prepared me for the sight in front of me.

“Oy, if I knew there would be a girl coming in, I would’ve been dressed in something other than me pants,” a male said, earning a chorus of laughter from the others in the suite. So it wasn’t my own room, I saw.

I must have been staring at all of the boys because one of them stood up and came closer to me, draping his arm around my shoulders as he let me in, closing the door behind me. “Apparently you’re not much of a looker, Payno, you’ve scared her into a shock.” I brought my hand to my face, mortified at how unprofessional I must have looked, mouth agape and frozen in place.

“Don’t worry love, his body scares all of us. You must be Scarlett, Caroline said you were coming, she had to dash out and get some clothes for Brooklyn, there was an incident, but we told her we’d take good care of you. The naked one’s Liam, he’s not normally nude, but Niall and I thought it’d be funny if we told him the wrong time you were coming. Gave us all a laugh, isn’t that right?” He spoke so quickly that I was having a hard time keeping up. I’d have to learn quickly, I realized.

“I’m Louis, Niall’s the one on the bed, and Zayn’s over by the window finishing up a call with his mum. Oh, and Harry should be back any moment, we told him he needed to get here asap. Shame he missed your entrance, he’s going to kick himself for being late.” Louis finished. I could hardly get a word in edgewise, let alone process all of this.

All of this time I wondered who I’d be styling, and it appeared to be the boy band, One Direction. Which meant I would have to be spending a lot more time with Harry and his rude girlfriend. Perfect.

“Ah, shh shh, I think I can hear them outside,” Niall said, holding a finger to his lips. Even Zayn ended his phone call and shot me a quick wave so we could eavesdrop on the conversation outside.

“I don’t want to go in there with them, I don’t understand why you can’t just say you had plans?” a female voice hissed. It seemed as though my first impression of her was pretty solid.

“The band comes first, Kendall, Louis said it was important and I have no idea how long it will take. We’re in New York for the next two weeks, we can reschedule.”

Ah, Kendall. That’s the Kardashian. Or was it Jenner? I wasn’t too hip to their world, it seemed.

“So what, you just want me to go? Paparazzi have been downstairs following our every move. When they see me leaving alone, they’re going to think we broke up!” Kendall was almost yelling at this point and I felt sorry for Harry. He didn’t do anything to deserve this.

“And? You know I don’t care about any of that stuff, Kendall. Christ. Either come in, or don’t, but I’m not going to stand out here and argue with you!”

I could hear snickering from the other side of the room and my attention went to Zayn who had a hand covering his mouth to keep himself from laughing out loud. “You tell her, Haz,” he said through his hand, earning another round of muffled laughter.

We heard the unmistakable sound of Harry’s keycard in the door and all of the boys darted around the room, trying to look as though everything was normal, leaving me standing in the center of the room, as shocked as ever as Harry walked inside.

“You,” he whispered, his eyes wide. All four boys turned to look at me, wondering how Harry seemed to know who I was.

“Me,” I said meekly, shrugging off my coat. I needed the bellhop, or whatever it was this hotel was calling them, to hurry with my bags, I needed to change shirts before meeting my new boss.

“You two know each other, yeah?” Zayn asked, moving from his corner by the window to take a seat on the bed.

I shook my head quickly and let out a silent ‘thank god’ as I heard a knock on the door. It must be my bags. Of course, as my luck would have it, both my bags and Kendall were outside of my door.

“What the hell is she doing here, Harry?!” I did not want to be on the receiving end of one of her bitch fits, that was for sure, and I quickly side stepped her, grabbing my bags from the doorman, rushing off towards the bathroom to change.

I could hear her shouts all the way in the bathroom and I rolled my eyes at the dramatics. I had too many things on my plate to worry about what seemed to be upsetting her. After changing into a vintage Queen shirt and my favorite blazer, I decided to touch up my makeup, waiting until the shouting was over before heading back out. Once I was sure she was gone, I emerged from the bathroom, fresh faced and cleaned from all of the coffee. I would figure out what to do with my coat later, I’m sure there was a dry clean place around here somewhere.

“You changed,” Liam noticed and I nodded, a small blush creeping up my cheeks. I didn’t want them to think I was trying too hard to seem cool.

“Yeah, I was getting into my taxi and someone bumped into me, spilling my coffee everywhere. I’m surprised you couldn’t smell it on me,” I grinned, feeling more at ease around the boys. Despite being world famous, they spoke to me like I was one of them. All of them except for Harry.

I couldn’t help but notice that he seemed to be too preoccupied with something on his phone than talking to me, but I tried not to let it bother me too much. He was probably arguing with his girlfriend, she seemed like the controlling type. The other boys were more than enough to keep me entertained and when they suggested we get lunch and have Caroline meet us there. I was excited to see her again, I can’t believe when she interviewed me, she made no mention of the five boys she manage to keep dressed so well.

As the boys filed out of the room, I was quick to follow suit, grabbing my coat as I did. I felt a hand on my arm pull me back and I spun around, meeting Harry’s eyes with my own. A sense of déjà vu washed over me but I ignored it.

“I’m sorry about earlier. Kendall…she’s really a nice girl most of the time. And your coat, I’m sorry about that as well.”

Any ill will I had towards him dissipated immediately following his apology. He wasn’t a bad person, I could see, he just dated one. I offered him a small smile and nodded, letting him know all was forgiven. “Thank you,” I said quietly and followed him out of the room. It was a shame he was dating such a horrible girl, he was a pretty nice kid.

Lunch with the boys was incredibly entertaining, especially once Harry stopped being so awkward. He finally managed to put his lunch down and joined in on the conversations. When Caroline joined us, she seemed to enjoy the fact that the boys had taken so well to me. I made a mental note to get more details about my job later on, but during lunch, I just wanted to get to know everyone. If I was going to be working with these people for up to a year, I had better get along with them all.

Once we were done with lunch, the group of us went back to the hotel room with Caroline informing me that there was actually a door leading to a separate room in the suite, one that I would be sharing with a couple of the other ladies on her team. Before I could get a word in with her, my mind swimming with questions, there was a knock at the door.

“Delivery for a Scarlett Hawthorn,” I heard from the other side. I looked to the others in confusion, their expressions mirroring my own. Standing up, I walked over towards the door and was greeted by a man holding a Burberry bag. I had no idea what it was, or who knew I was staying in this room, but I took it from the man and stepped back into the room, taking a seat on the bed.

As I took the box out of the bag, I noticed a note attached and I did my best to make out the sloppy handwriting.

I hope you enjoy your new coat. I’m sorry again about the last, and the things Kendall said about you. I hope you’re having a great first day and that this morning doesn’t get us off on a wrong start.

- Harry

I looked over at the others, my mouth agape in shock as I opened the box, finding a beautiful tan Burberry trench coat. I couldn’t accept this from him. It was incredibly sweet for him to want to replace my old one, but this was too much.

“It seems as though someone’s taken a liking to Scarlett,” Amelia, Caroline’s friend and Brooklyn’s nanny spoke first, breaking the silence. My face turned bright red and I covered it with the lid from the box, my mind racing with thoughts. I had to talk to Harry, and fast.
