Dreaming about London

Some positive change

Silence. For several seconds, where I personally didn’t have a clue of what to say or if Aida was actually speaking the truth.

“Wh… what?” Em managed to ask at some point.

“Yeah, Nick Grimshaw,” Aida answered now looking like she was about to crack up from the look on our faces. “He wants us… to be on his show.”

More silence. It was Aida’s laugh that ended up breaking it.

“You should see your faces!” she heaved. “Isn’t it incredible?”

“Well…” I began, it felt all weird to be suddenly talking and using my voice. “Are you making fun of us? Cause if it’s a joke, I’m not finding it very funny…”

“No, you dork!” she immediately replied. “Nick wants us to be on his show on BBC Radio 1.”

“Uhm… okay… well, when?” Em asked obviously not quite believing Aida either.

“He told me to give him a call, when we could get off from work in the morning,” she smiled back at us proudly.

“So you’re serious?” I asked.

“Hell yeah, I am!” she exclaimed now suddenly looking a bit irritated from our frowning.

“Oh my God,” Em mumbled putting her hands in front of her mouth. “We’re going to be on Grimmy?”

“Well, we haven’t found a day yet, but he did say that it would be great…” Aida began but I interrupted her by screaming:

“Fucking Grimmy! Hell yeah!”

“I know, right?” Aida now squealed hitting the same register with her voice as I did which was quite sick, since her voice was naturally a lot deeper than mine.

I jumped up from my chair and started dancing around the same way as Em had been doing for a few seconds and Aida quickly joined in and I couldn’t help but suddenly get a bit concerned that the neighbors would get angry from all the stumping around on the floor.

It was really difficult to fall asleep. I kept turning around without any chance of pushing away the thoughts of what might happen to our career if we could get some publicity such as the kind a person like Nick Grimshaw could. I mean, we’d already been incredibly lucky with all the support and attention that we’d gotten, due to the position of our dear boyfriends and there were always loads of people at our concerts which we got to do more and more of.

Could we do some bigger concerts? Are we actually good enough to make a living out of this? Or will people only know us because of the boys? What if they think we’re only with them to get publicity?

At some point after having gone through those scary thoughts about a hundred times I heard Aida’s voice somewhere in my head saying: “Oh shut the fuck up. Why do you care what they think?”

Man, I really needed to quit my job at Aunt Betty…

Which was what I told Nathalie and Betty the following day. That I would have to stop working there after Christmas. Cause as I looked down at my calendar on my phone I realized the schedule getting even more packed with concerts and gigs week by week. There was no way that I would have any time left for a full time job.

They were both very understanding, of course. They’d noticed the heavy attention that the girls and I had gotten and how it had affected our music career already.

But I would still have another few weeks left of working full time, before I would get off to go home to Denmark for Christmas and when I would get back it would be to… be a musician. A real one. Oh my God, it felt so intimidating.

I spent the afternoon when I was at home on my own after work doing some skyping with my brother, Niels, who had apparently something rather important to talk to me about according to the desperate Twitter messages that he’d been sending me last night.

“Maja!” he exclaimed out of my computer as I was getting the camera ready.

“Well hello there, bro. How’s it going?” I replied smiling back at his face that now appeared on my screen. “Wow, have you started growing some beards?”

“Yeah a bit, I think it makes me look sexy,” he said point plank and without showing any emotion at all, which made me laugh. “Damn, it’s been a while since I saw you last time!”

“I know, I’m so terribly busy at the moment with work and music,” I said.

“Have you lost weight?” he asked which just like his previous outbreak took me a bit by surprise.

“Uhm… yes, I have. Wait, what was it that you wanted to talk to me about? You seemed all anxious when you wrote me those Twitter messages yesterday.”

“Yeah, I have a problem.”

My brother’s honesty had always been one of the things about him that I loved the most, he would always say what he thought and not hide anything at all from his friends and family.

“Okay. And what is that?” I asked trying to act serious when I saw the worried expression on his face.

“I… I have… kind of… I don’t know man, she’s driving me crazy!”

“Wauw, there’s a she!” I squealed and now it was his turn to look surprised and also a bit annoyed with the harsh sound of my loud voice.

“Yeah, there’s a she,” he replied looking down.

“Talk to me,” I said in the most comforting big sister-tone that I could pull off.

“Well… We met at some party about… a month ago, I think. And we… you know… we…”

“Okay, fine you don’t have to elaborate that bit,” I quickly interrupted him not wanting to hear the slightest bit about my younger brother’s sex life.

“Okay then,” he smirked. “And so… it was just. Really nice. She was like… so incredibly cool.”

“That’s good to hear.”

“Yeah, but then… We started texting and hanging out, you know. And now… I can’t seem to get her out of my head.”

“Aw you’re so cute. So a girl has finally got her grip on you? About time…”

“Is this the way it feels?! It’s pretty annoying if you ask me. I can’t manage to get anything done, I do my hair every single day and worry about how I look all the time, in case you know… I would bump in to her.”

“Well, who is she? Tell me about her.”

“Uhm… Her name is Sarah. Sarah Winters. She’s 19 years old. Her hair is brown… and soft. And her eyes, you should see her eyes. They’re like… blue. So beautiful. Almost as blue as yours. And she’s… one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.”

“Sounds like a winner. What exactly is the problem?”

“The problem is that I don’t know what the fuck to do! She’s driving me crazy! I mean, come on, I’ve never had a girlfriend before. How do you do that? How do I become a good boyfriend, Maja?”

“Well… First you’ll have to realize the fact that you aren’t allowed to make out or do any other things in that respect with other girls than her.”

“What about guys then? No, I’m just kidding,” he laughed at his own terrible joke.

“Idiot,” I chuckled back at him. “And then. You’re going to have to be yourself. And be nice to her. She sounds like a girl who doesn’t deserve to be treated the way you seem to treat other girls.”

“I don’t want to treat her like that. I just want to… be with her.”

“God, you really like her, don’t you?”

“Is it that obvious?” he sighed. “It’s exhausting. But at the same time I don’t think I’ve ever felt this happy with anyone before. And I don’t even know her that well! Isn’t that crazy?”

“Falling in love is crazy, dear brother,” I joked in the most blissful tone I could manage to do to make him brighten up his poor mood a bit. “Don’t worry, I’m sure it’ll be great. She sounds great!”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. But I can’t ask her to be my girlfriend already, can I?”

“Oh God no,” I answered a bit too fast. “I mean, I really think you should tell her how you feel. That you like her and that it would be great to get to know her better. Take her out on a date and so on.”

“Okay. Okay, I’ll do that. I’ll do it now!”

And without letting me say anything in objection he had immediately pulled out his phone to dial a number.

“Niels, are you sure what you’re going to…” I began but he blocked my voice by saying in a slightly shrill tone that I’d never heard him use before:

“Hi Sarah!”

I had to put my hands in front of my mouth in order not to laugh too loudly and disturb him, he obviously had trouble enough with this conversation as it was.

“Not much, just chilling,” he said in to the phone. The smile on his face and blushing cheeks spoke the truth: He really really liked this girl.

“Listen, I’ve been thinking about something. I want to talk to you, can you meet me in the park in… let’s say, twenty minutes? Or if you’re busy, I totally understand…”

I sat on my bed biting on to my pillow with the tears streaming down my face from having to hold back the huge shock waves of laughter that were tearing my body apart inch by inch.

“Really? Okay, great then! I’ll see you soon. Okay, bye.”

Niels hung up the phone and now sat with an expression on his face that was bit hard to read. It was happy, yes, definitely happy. But also… scared to death.

“What the hell have I done?!” he suddenly yelled at me making me jump. “I can’t tell her that, I have to call her back and cancel…”

“Niels!” I heard myself scream in order to stop him. Luckily my voice seemed quite effective.
“Don’t do that. Tell her. If she’s worth being your girlfriend she will feel the same way! Don’t you dare mess this up.”

“Well,” he tried with an innocent tone that made him seem so cute and like he was eight years old again. “What do I say?”

“What I told you to say. Now go, you’re in a bit of a hurry if you want to make it to the park without sweating like a pig.”

“Okay,” he said and took a deep breath. “Okay. I’m going to go to the park, that’s what I’m going to, yes. Thanks sis, love you!”

“Love you too! Now go love Sarah as well.” I smiled comforting back at him as he hung up on the computer with a shy and very nervous smile.

God, that boy was still just a boy…

The cute thoughts I sent to my dear brother that afternoon was quickly replaced by the ones I had to deal with myself as I sat down eating dinner in the kitchen with Aida and Em. I had made us some vegetable soup since Aida had apparently gone back to some really healthy diet because of having gained a few pounds – which was in my opinion nowhere to be seen on her still trimmed and beautiful body.

But anyway, she made the rest of feel really guilty whenever we would eat something that involved a few calories. And I had for a long time wanted to lose weight, more than I’d already lost and so I joined in on filling the fridge with nothing but broccoli and loads of oxygen.

Out of all people in the world, she was probably the best at keeping a diet even though she might be the one who was most far away from being anything near overweight. Em had a similar slim figure, the two of those always made me feel terrible even though I never actually told them. But seeing paparazzi photos of us three together playing concerts or walking around London made me want to kill myself. And so I decided that it was also time for some running again soon.

We all ate in silence even though I knew that we were all really excited about our boys coming home. Niall, Liam and Harry would come over to our place straight from the airport, since they’d told us not to pick them up which would be too dangerous and crazy with all the screaming people.

We tried to rehearse a bit, trying out a few new songs that we’d been writing on each of us but the excitement was too big and so we just ended up giggling heavily the entire time like a bunch of young stupid teenage girls.

It felt really weird actually. I’d been missing Niall a lot and I was looking forward to see him, but at the same time I was also feeling… a bit nervous. I don’t know why, cause I knew him so well but it honestly felt quite nice notice the butterflies in your stomach, I felt so happy.

Aida was acting the same way, only she always gets so awkward and exaggerated whenever she’s nervous, laughing way too loud all the time and trying to make everything seem like she was nothing but awesome. But it is always easy to tell that she really isn’t, especially not when she would grunt like a pig whenever she would breathe in quickly in between her laughs.
I’m not exactly sure how Em felt. She told us she was fine, but after what had happened two weeks ago and all the ups and downs that she’d had with Liam none of us could be sure that she would feel good getting touched by her boyfriend yet.

Around half past eight the doorbell rang and Aida let in Harry, who was the first one to arrive. The boys had stopped arriving more than one at the time, because it would cause way too much hysteria outside our poor tiny apartment. He held her tightly and started kissing her until Em would shout very loudly that they should stop doing that as she and I were standing with red faces trying to act normal next to them.

“I’m sorry,” Harry said blushing but smiling widely at the same time before he came over to hug the two of us. “Good to see you.”

Niall was the next one to enter the door to our home and I couldn’t restrain myself from practically jumping in to his arms that wrapped around my shoulders making me feel warm despite the cold whether that had taken over London.

“God, I’ve missed you,” I said in to his chest.

“I’ve missed you too,” he breathed in to my hair before kissing my lips softly. I pulled back after that only one, even though I could keep going on kissing him forever but I wouldn’t risk doing the same stunt as Aida and Harry making everybody around us uncomfortable.

It was easy to sense that the mood was a bit tense as we were all waiting for Liam so Niall and I went out in the kitchen to make us all some coffee. It was also a bit of an excuse to get some privacy from the others and as soon as we were out of sight I felt myself being turned around and pulled in for some more of those terribly perfect kisses that Niall gave me over and over again. The butterflies in my stomach travelled around in there faster than ever and I couldn’t seem to get enough of what I had had to miss for what seemed like ages.

It wasn’t until we heard the door open and close again that we pulled away from each other to peek our heads out on the other side of the door to the kitchen in order to give him and Em some privacy as well. I guess Aida and Harry had thought the same way since they were busy finding out what vinyl to put on in the other end of the living room.

We saw Liam step forward saying: “Hi.” Nothing more.

Nothing more was ever needed. Cause the following second Em had immediately snuggled in to his chest and slowly, with a bit of hesitation, he wrapped his arms around her.

And she didn’t pull away.
