Envy (Niall Horan) [BOOK 1]

Chapter 22

Nialls POV
I still can’t process what just happened. Eli… Why did she have to do that…It’s all my fault!
Why couldn’t I just act like a man and protect her? Instead I was frozen to the spot acting like a complete arse.
They were kicking her when she was weak and throwing rocks at her. Why would anyone do such a horrible thing? The thing is that even though she couldn’t bare the pain she sucked it up and made sure I was safe… She cared about my own safety more than her own… I-I can’t even form words in my mind.
Right now we’re both in the hotel lobby and she’s unconscious on the floor. The hotel locked the front doors and got security to block it so no one would enter.
I’m sitting down right next to her laying body on the cold marble floor. Her cheek has a huge purple mark and she has two large scratches on her forehead. They are so big that it looks as if she’s wearing a red headband wrapped around her skull. I can’t help myself from breaking down.
Her cold hand is in mine and my tears are starting to wet her long sleeve. I hear people panicking around me. Everyone is freaking out about the whole incident that just happened. Steve called the ambulance and there on their way.
The heart breaking thing is that the first thing I was asked when I finally made it to the hotel was if I was okay. They didn’t even care about Eli whose body was obviously unconscious and being held in my arms.
There are many perks to being well known as I am, but there are also down falls as well. People care more about my safety more than a vulnerable innocent human being. Major downfall.
As I’m holding Eli’s hand I feel how it’s getting colder and I try to kiss it and rub it so she can keep warm.
She’s so cold.
I feel my tears stream down my face more forcefully and quickly. I just can’t handle seeing the one I love like this. Why can’t that be me instead of her?
I close my eyes and lower my head to her mouth so I can make sure that she’s still breathing.
Thank god she is, but it’s becoming more faint.
“WHERE IS THE FUCKING AMBULANCE?” I belt out in sobs.
I then feel someone put their hand on my shoulder. I look up to see Zayn staring down at me with worried eyes. He bends down to me.
“Niall, Steve just called again. They are almost here. Don’t worry Eli is going to be okay.” Zayn says.
I then close my eyes trying to hold back the tears again.
Zayn then gives me a reassuring hug.
“It’s alright mate.” He whispers.
I then look into his eyes and see how they look uncertain. I don’t think he’s even sure himself if she’s going to be okay.
I look around me seeing people running around everywhere.
The checkout guy is on the phone talking to families of guests in the hotel, Sofy is with Steve crying on his chest, and Harry is just a few feet away from me. He’s leaning on a wall that is near the hallway. His gaze is on Eli. I can’t read him. His face is completely blank. Harry then looks at me and I guess notices the tears that are spread all over my face. He looks at Eli once again and then walks away.
Even though he’s one of my best friends, sometimes I don’t understand him.
I turn my gaze back to Eli and notice red stains on her purple long sleeve shirt. I lift it up a little and let out a gasp. Both of her sides are completely purple, blue, and red. I look at Zayn who is still next to me and see how his eyes are widened and shocked.
I then pull her shirt back down and lift up her sleeves to check for any further injuries. She has a long red scratch reaching from her elbow to the middle of her wrist in her right arm and two small bruises on her wrist in her left.
“IS THE AMBULANCE HERE YET? SHE NEEDS HELP NOW!” I hear Zayn yell.
I would cry, but it came to the point that I ran out of tears.
I then begin to hear loud steps and look behind me to see four paramedics carrying a board with many seat belts. They run to Eli and put her on the board while putting an oxygen mask on her.
“Where are you taking her?” I ask.
“Emergency.” One of the men said.
“Let me go.” I demanded.
“Sorry son, but in order to help your friend we need to check her while we’re driving her to the hospital. There isn’t enough room for you.” He replied.
“I have to go!” I almost yell.
“I’m sorr-“
“PLEASE I HAVE TO GO!” I scream.
Zayn holds me back while the paramedics begin to take Eli out of the hotel.
I try to run after them, but they already left. Damn! I begin to put my hands through my hair roughly and I kick a wall frustrated.
“Mate the paramedics took her. They are going to take good care of her.” Zayn said.
“Come on lets go.” I say while beginning to walk away.
Zayn catches up to me.
“Niall, where are you going?”
“We are going to go get Harry to drive us to the hospital.”
“Niall not even the ambulance is there yet. Why don’t we visit her tomorrow? Also the crowd is still outside surrounding the place.” He replied calmly.
I keep on forgetting about the crowd.
“Shit.” I say to myself.
“Zayn I just have to see her now. I have to see if she’s okay!” I comment with worry.
“Why don’t we get something to eat here first and then you can call the hospital in a few hours to see how she’s doing.”
I sigh and slowly nod my head.
Two Hours later
It’s been two hours and I feel so anxious. I haven’t heard anything from Eli and I can’t help but to think the worst. Zayn and I went to go eat, but I couldn’t. I was full from anxiety.
I just got the word from Steve that I can call the hospital now. I’m dialing the phone number in my phone right now.
It’s ringing… Pick up. Pick up. Pick up.
“Hello. This is the hospital of-“
“Hi I need to know how Elizabeth Harrison is doing.” I interrupt the woman.
“Okay let me see her room number and her doctor and I will get that info for you.” I hear her reply.
“Thanks.”
Silence. Silence. Waiting. More silence.
“Sweetie you may have to come down here.” She says.
I feel my heart stop and quickly hang up the phone.
Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh!
I run to Steve frantically.
“Steve please drive me to the hospital. Eli she’s in- I’m afraid that- I-“ I yet again can’t form words.
“Sure thing kiddo. Follow me to the back of the hotel.”
I nod and follow him.
At the hospital
The car ride over here was the most stressful ride of my life. Once we park I run out, not caring if anyone notices me. When I’m at the entrance of the hospital, I’m out of breath.
I walk up to the front desk.
“Hello.” The woman at the desk says. Her voice sounds like the woman from the phone.
“I need to know what room Elizabeth Harrison is in.” I say.
“Oh you’re the man from the phone that hung up on me.” She states.
“Ya, so the room?” I ask a little annoyed by her response.
She blushes from embarrassment.
“Sorry let me check that for you.”
She then looks through her clipboard.
“She is in room 1309 on the second floor.” She replies.
I nod and then run to the elevator.
I press the number two button quickly.
While in the elevator shaking from anxiety and nervousness, I hear voices behind me and I turn around. A bald little girl in a big blue hospital dress is whispering something in her, I’m guessing her mother’s ear while staring at me. She notices how I’m looking at her and she quickly looks down. She looks as if she’s around seven or eight years old. Her mother then walks closer to me.
“Are you Niall Horan?” The woman asks.
I nod.
“This is my daughter Mia, and you and the boys are kind of her heroes. She wants to know if you can take a picture with her.”
I look at my watch and really want to pass her offer because I have to see Eli.
The little girl notices and then looks sad. She then turns to her mother.
“Mom he doesn’t want to take a picture with a sick girl.”
My heart breaks. I go to her and hold her in my arms. I squeeze her tight.
“You’re beautiful.” I whisper in her ear.
I then let go of her and turn to her mother.
“I would be honored to take a picture with her.”
The little girl smiles as well as her mom.
The picture that was taken was of me kissing Mia on her cheek while she’s smiling big. It’s adorable.
“Mr. Horan?” She asks.
“Yes Mia? By the way call me Niall.”
She giggles.
“Niall if you don’t mind me asking. Why are you at the hospital?”
I glance at her mother who is mouthing the word sorry.
I then turn back to Mia.
“I’m visiting a person I care about a lot.” I simply reply.
She then nods.
“That person’s lucky because they have a great friend like you.” She cutely states.
I chuckle.
“It’s actually the other way around. I’m lucky to have her as a friend. I’m also lucky because now I have a new amazing friend named Mia.” I add.
She giggles and gives me another hug.
Mia and her mother then wave goodbye before stepping out of the elevator.
I guess not all fans are bad and crazy.
I realize how that little delay caused me to end up on the fourth floor. I press number two again and all my nervousness comes back.
The elevator begins to go down and it finally stops and opens.
I run out and notice the familiar hall. The same emergency sign is hanging in the same place, the same smell of antibiotics is in the air, and the same goose bumps are spreading throughout my body due to the cold hall. The last time I was here, was when Eli collapsed due to dehydration and starvation. Except this time it’s for an even worse reason.
How come she always ends up here, when I’m in her life? What’s going to happen when I have to go back on tour and leave her again? I can’t do that to her again. I can’t.
I finally find the room number and walk in. There are doctors and nurses surrounding her bed.
“Who let you in?” one of them asks.
“The lady downstairs told me I can come up.” I reply.
“Look you c-“
“What’s wrong with her is she okay?” I ask.
I begin to feel tears build in my eyes which he notices.
He sighs, looks at his clipboard, and then back at me.
“Your friend has major bruises and injury in her ribs. Two of them are broken. Her right ankle is swollen as well as her knee. Her right arm is fractured as well.” He states.
“What about her head? She fell backwards on concrete.”
He sighs deeply.
“She’s in a coma….. The back of her skull cracked a little so she had to get stitches. Your friend is going to have to stay here for a while.”
I froze right to the spot. She’s in a fucking coma because of my dumb arse.
I try to hold back my emotions but I can’t. I begin to cry once again, uncontrollably into my hands. The doctor is still standing in front of me unsure of what to do.
“Would you like to see her?” He asks.
I look up and slowly nod. He motions everyone else to leave.
When they walk out, the room is silent. I walk up to the bed in the middle of the room.
The bed is much bigger and has more technology than the one she was in last time she was here.
Her right arm is in a sling and she has a white bandage wrapped around her fore head.
They cleaned up all the cuts she had, but the bruises are still visible.
I walk up to her and observe her for a while. Each second I’m looking at her, I feel my heart begin to slow down more and more. I turn away not being able to look at her any longer.
I slowly turn back and I grab her hand slowly and softly. I kiss it and let it go.
“I love you Eli.” I whisper knowing that she can’t possibly hear me.
“I’m going to visit you every day until you get out of here. How I can’t wait until I can see those beautiful brown eyes of yours, when I can see them sparkle again. “
I stare at her for a little while longer.
The doctor then comes in.
“Are you done? I don’t want to rush you, but we have to wrap bandages around her body.”
I look at her once again and then walk out without another word.
I’m going to be here for her. No more being a chicken. No more.
When I’m at the lobby, I see Steve sleeping in one of the waiting chairs. I wake him up and we head back to his car.
“How’s she doing?” He asks.
“She’s in a coma.” I reply.
He then sighs.
“That poor girl.” He comments.
I close my eyes frustrated and stressed.
I then hear my phone begin to ring in my pocket and I take it out.
It’s Simon.
I answer.
“What the hell do you want Simon. What? Do you have more security guards to ditch me?” I angrily say.
“Niall that wasn’t because of me, we have to talk.” He states.
“Why should I trust you?” I ask.
“Because I know who sent them.”
