Stole My Heart

I took a long time walking down the stairs. I wanted to plan out what I was going to say to my parents to convince them. What could I say? I stared blankly at the wall for what seemed like an eternity before my dad almost ran into me coming down the stairs.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“What? Oh… um… yeah.” I replied.

I started freaking out when he continued to walk downstairs. I took a deep breath and followed him until he stopped in the kitchen to get some coffee. Mom was standing there trying to clean the table.

“Hey dad…” I started. “Could I talk to you and mom please?”

“Uh, sure. Is something wrong?”

“No… not exactly. You’ll understand once I tell you.” I stated unsurely.

We all sat down at the table and I took a deep breath, trying to muster as much courage as possible. I realized I wasn’t quite sure how to start so I kind of just blurted it out.

“I want to go on tour with One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer.”

“Well of course you do. But there’s nothing you can do about it.” my mom said.

I sighed. “Allow me to rephrase that – One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer asked me to go on tour with them and I want to go.”

My parents sat there staring at me for a minute or two. I wasn’t sure if they were taking so long to say something because I had said it so quickly or because they couldn’t believe what had just come out of my mouth.

I decided to break the silence. “They’ve got it all planned out. We don’t need to worry about any of the expenses and they have great security so nothing will happen to me. Sarah, Nina, and Heather are all going. And-“

My dad cut me off. “No.”

“Just give me a minute. They have already arranged-“

“No.” my dad repeated.

“What? Why not?” I asked, my temper rising.

“Because you’re too young.” he responded sternly.

“I am not too young!” I shouted indignantly. “Luke is younger than me by six months!”

“Your mother and I hardly even know these people.”

“But you did like them the times that you did meet them? Please can I go? Nina Heather and Sarah’s parents all agreed to let them go! I know that I have college to think about but if I do go I promise that I will start college next year. No exceptions.”

“Laurel I-“ he started.

“Dad, you used to be in a band! You’ve already had a chance to see the world and all it has to offer - I haven’t! this is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity and I can’t just let it go! I want you to know though that I’m going no matter what you say. I just figured that I might as well get your permission first.” I finished.

I looked to mom. “Please?” I asked. She was nodding in agreement.

“I don’t know…” my dad said, still unsure.

“Tell you what – Nina’s, Heather’s, and Sarah’s parents are all coming over. How about you talk to them about it and then make your decision.” I said.

“All right.” My dad said consenting after a while.

He got up from the table and went upstairs. My mom followed but more slowly. I got up as well. She stopped and in a quiet voice said, “I’ll convince him.” And walked off without another word. Right then, I couldn’t think of a time that I had loved my mom any more.
