Can't Crush The Boss

I Ain't No Square

It was official, Harry and I had been dating a little over a month now. It's funny when I look back and think how this happened, how I couldn't stand him and now I couldn't get enough of him. I didn't fall into his trap, we just fell in together. Even Trisha was impressed with the change she was seeing in Harry; being less of a prankster and all.

Prom was less than two weeks away and I still didn't have a dress. I was having a hard time figuring things out. The night would center on a 1950s theme: "I Ain't No Square"; inspired by the movie Cry Baby with Johnny Depp. I could either wear a boring librarian dress or a skin-tight black leather suit. I wasn't crazy about either one, and on top of that my mom was slammed with final exam preparations so she wasn't able to help much.

Luckily Trisha offered to go shopping with me. She claimed to have a good eye for fashion, already having an idea for my perfect dress.

"Chloe, I'm thinking 'sexy-square'," she waved her hand in the air as if to envision her flashing sign.

"Sounds good but what are the chances of finding a sexy 50s dress?"

"You gotta think Marilyn Monroe. Look at what a sex symbol she was!"

"Trisha, I'm not trying to be a sex symbol. I just want to look nice for prom; not simple and plain nice but stunning nice, minus all your sexy add-ons."

"Okay first off, you’re going to be 18 soon. Which means you are entering the peak of your womanhood; the best years of your life are ahead of you. You're young, beautiful and you need to accept that it's okay to feel and look sexy. Don't confuse that word with sluty. Capiche?"

I had just been rebuked and enlightened. Nodding in agreement, I spotted the cutest boutique with a dress on the window display that matched Trisha's vision. It was a sophisticated halter dress. We rushed in and immediately asked for assistance.

The dress had a shimmery pearl tone, made of silk and chiffon. It was a little fuller from the waist down and reached slightly above my knee. It did remind me a lot of Marilyn Monroe but the contrast against my long brown hair and eyes had won me over. It was very fitting around my bust area, not too revealing. Although it was drastically low in the back, almost an inch above my tailbone.

"That is perfect!" Trisha shouted. "All we need is some fire red lipstick and high heels and you'll be the queen of the squares!"

"You don't think it’s a bit much?" I turned around to show off my back.

"No, that's your secret weapon."

Trisha had a mischievous grin. I trusted her taste, however I still needed to get used this. I separated the dress and made half the payment, hoping that with my next paycheck this weekend I could pay off the dress in time.

Later that Saturday afternoon, we came back to my house for a bite to eat before I had to change into my uniform and go to work. In the mean time I asked Trisha a couple questions regarding relationships. The whole time she had a cheesy smile that plagued me as I continued to reveal deep and personal details. Her words were brief due to the lack of time, but she did encourage me to take things slow and enjoy the ride because first loves are never forgotten.

Love? This was the first time I had considered the word. It was way too soon for that. Sure I've heard of people marrying within 3 weeks of having met each other, but that wasn't me. I've just been exposed to this whole dating scenario; I don't even fully understand the concept of love. Only If it's the true love I see between my parents; lasting, faithful companionship and honesty. That seemed so far away though. What about all these hormonal impulses and hot flashes? I'm not talking menopause here, but where did that fit in?

I looked at my phone to quickly check the time and saw a missed text.

Hurry up and get to work, I'm here early dying to see you. I've missed you all week! I need my fix before you clock in;)–Harry

Harry didn't come to work yesterday or Thursday on account that he had gone out of town to his Aunt's house, for a family matter. He was gone all week and frankly I was dying to see him too. I took my mom's car and drove off to work while Trisha left to her house.

I dressed in my usual polo shirt, shorts and pony tail, but Harry had a way of making me feel attractive in the most simplest of attire. I sat beside him in his office, listening as he described how his week went. I promise I was paying attention but I was too enthralled by his handsome face. Especially since this was the first time I hadn't seen him cleanly shaved. His stubby facial hair made him look older and hotter, if that was possible.

"Are you listening or am I boring you?" he asked grinning.

"Oh I'm listening, but I can't help get over how handsome you are," I sighed.

Oh wait, did that just slip out? I saw how his eye brows shot up, not expecting me to say that. I believe it was more flattering than surprising, resulting in another one of those self-satisfied glances.

"I think this is the first time you've made me blush," he admitted. "As much as I'd like to continue, we have to get out on the floor. It's almost 5:30."

"Alright."

I stood up slightly bummed but I would still get to see him throughout the night anyway. I gave him a quick peck kiss and walked out to the main floor. As I predicted, Rachel and Jessica were plotting malicious assumptions once they saw me come out. They didn't have to say a word, it was written all over their faces.

"Taking care of business back there are we?" Rachel joked.

"No, just talking."

"You look disappointed. Did you WANT to take care of business?" She persisted.

"Maybe not business but minor transactions." I answered.

The girls cracked up and I was helpless to join in. I didn't talk much about my personal life but it was still fun to goof around with them. Even if I still had no idea what they were talking about sometimes. The best part was when I'd say something that made no sense or proved my inexperience, they'd respond "Oh Chloe, that's such a Chloe thing to say". Or my personal favorite, "You just pulled a Chloe!"

Something did change in me that night in Harry's car. By initiating the kiss, I realized how thrilling it was to take the lead. Perhaps I knew that whatever I did Harry wouldn't reject me or expect too much, so I didn't run any risks of feeling foolish or self-conscious. I felt more confidence if anything, especially to do it again.

Also, I found myself daydreaming more about him, but I could never tell him that. Occasionally I'd surprise myself, getting too carried away. I'd even blush at times and that never took much effort. My favorite fantasy was of him walking into my classroom shirtless and asking my teacher if I could be excused. Just to see the faces of all the stuck-up girls of my class … priceless!

I was at the register waiting for the next customer while Harry was talking to a friend further in the back. Naturally my mind wandered off and began another movie starring him and yours truly. My eyes were fixed on him to make sure I didn't overlook any precious details.

I was so gone I didn't notice him glancing back over and over again. I liked it when we were far away but still within each other's sight. He'd tease me with bedroom eyes and I just rolled mine all the time. It was our secret way of flirting without being too obvious.

A while later he sneaked up on me, expecting some answers.

"Were you picturing me naked earlier or something?" He said in a low tone and laughed.

"No! What would give you that idea?" I demanded, obviously embarrassed.

"I saw you undressing me with your eyes. Don't lie. Plus you had a guilty expression on your face, like you had just been caught."

"You really like to give me a hard time don't you? Keep it up and I'm going to file sexual harassment on you," I warned him.

He raised his hands in surrender while backing away and smiling. "I'll get you later," he replied and turned around.

I want to say a special thanks to those that have been reading this story, voting and commenting. You know how much a writer appreciates that. I always try to see if those who have commented have stories on their own so I can repay the gesture. So if I haven't its because I'm in the middle of reading the first few chapters.
