Be My Buttercup

Harry's Point of View

"I'm going to get out now" Alyssa said now holding the wrist that made me feel absolutely amazing. I smiled at her, looking only at her face. I know she didn't expect any of this to happen but she started it.

"Okay, I won't peek." I covered my eyes with my hands and waited for her to get out and wrap a towel around herself. She's gorgeous. I'm hoping now she'll say yes to the dance. That was too intimate for her not to like me.

"So I took her book and put this envelope in it and it'll ask her to homecoming."

I showed Zayn a picture I took on my phone and he grinned not really knowing what to say. No one thinks she'll say yes but I honestly think she will. I'd like to tell them about the other night but I don't want to embarrass her. The guys will think it's hot but she'll kill me and it won't happen ever again.

"Yeah, that's creative."

"Yeah? What are you doing for Perrie?"

"I think it's just known. We've been dating for over a year."

"Mate, you gotta ask her."

"Why?"

"I heard Marilyn and Alyssa talking. A girl always wants to be asked."

Zayn laughed and took another bite from his sandwich. Panera is really good. "I'm going to have to hang out at your house. You have all the girls there."

"Yeah, I should get Alyssa to have a sleep over and I'll sneak the boys in. We can spy."

I don't know why but we found that hilarious. I guess that'll be happening this weekend.

"Can we read?"

"Jesus Harry. You can't do that!"

"Sorry," I chuckled but walked in, "let's read. The books almost over."

"I would but I have homework to do." She's looking at me differently. Almost like I'm human rather than a dog. "And I'm not lying; I really do have homework."

"Alyssa, just a little bit. We stopped halfway through chapter seven." She looked at me, pouting and finally patted her bed for me to sit.

I took her book from the night stand and made sure the letter was tightly stuck right before chapter eight. Alyssa read and read but I couldn't concentrate. Even though this part is getting good I can't help but wonder what she's going to think; what she's going to say.

One more page and we'll be there. Just one more page.

"Harry?" Don't stop!

"Yeah?"

"Are you okay?" Alyssa was looking at me now in confusion. I realized I was tense and gripping onto her arm tightly.

"Uh, yeah, just excited."

"Okay" she mumbled sarcastically while flipping to the next page where the note was wedged in.

I shifted my body to look at her furrowed brows. She's clueless. I spent at least twenty minutes perfecting her name on the outside of the letter and twenty more minutes placing the note neatly inside.

"What's that?" I asked, trying not to smile.

"I have no idea." She carefully slid her finger from the corner of the letter to the other side. Her hands were a little shaky, she's probably getting an idea of what's going on.

Alyssa,
Please, please, please, please, go to homecoming with me. I'll be your 'man in black' and you can be my buttercup. Yes, that's cheesy but I won't take no for an answer. And if you're debating don't show too much emotion. I'm sitting right beside you. Xx.

She set the note down in the book and closed it. My fingers are now crossed and shaking like hers. Alyssa looked at me, curling her lips and taking a deep breath in. Are there tears in her eyes?

"I can't Harry" a whisper escaped.

"Why not?" I've practiced this multiple times with Liam. We've done hundreds of scenarios.

"I don't do dances."

"I'll be with you though. I'll never leave your side."

"I want to I just--"

"Alyssa, I don't know your middle name, White. Please go to the dance with me."

"No Harry." She stood up and wiped her face. Why is this so hard for her? It's a stupid dance.

"Yes Alyssa. It took me forever to make that card and to think of where to put it. It may not seem like much but I thought it would be special. The Princess Bride is our story; the book we read together. Come on, please?" My words have quickly gone off cue and they've turned into my own. Walking to her, pulling her hips to mine, holding her cheek in my hand was never part of the plan.

"Alyssa, go to the dance with me."

"Why is this so important to you?"

"It's my only chance and I don't want to spend that night with anyone else but you." I refuse to let her move away until she's said yes. I'll kiss her and hug her and beg if I have to but I won't take no.

"Alyssa" I whispered as I kissed her forehead, "please go with me."

She draped her arms around my neck without looking up at me. Her eyes connected with the hardwood floor and didn't make any kind of effort to move.

"Harry, I can't."

"You can, and you will." I kissed her with everything I have and walked out of her room. Not angry, not mad, not even frustrated, just hopeful.

Notes

So does anyone think she's going to the dance?
Do you think his little note was adorable?
