The Last Goodbye

The one that got away

Not happening. This was not happening. Everyone was sitting and laughing at everything Harry said. My mother and sister gazed upon him like as if they were under his spell. He existed to torture me.

I tried getting Harry's attention, but he couldn't see me for the huge wall dividing the dining room and the staircase. Finally after waving my hand crazily my boyfriend Christian saw me. I was slightly disappointed, because I got the wrong guy to notice me.

"Hey your up." Christian said leaning in to kiss me, but I moved my head so he could kiss my right cheek.

"My parents." I said trying to excuse it. I lied I just didn't want Harry to see it. He grabbed my hand and guided me to where everyone else were siting. I took a seat next to Christian. I sat across from Harry who sat next to my little sister Chloe. While my parents sat on either ends of the table.

"Tori where have you been hiding this wonderful young man?" My mother asked.
"Yeah where exactly did you hide him?" Chloe asked sarcastically. If I had opened my mouth on the spot it would automatically sounded like I was lying.

"I'm actually Elizabeth's new boyfriend." Harry blurted out. All heads turned towards him. They all wore confused looks on their faces. "Your dating Elizabeth?" Dad asked sounding confused.

"Yes Sir I am." Harry replied.

" I never would have guess she would have dated... that type." Mom said taking a sip of her coffee. What my mother was actually trying to say. " I didn't know she dated the dark haired, tattoo type." Which is true.
Elizabeth was the overly romantic type and the guys she like has to look like he came out of a cheesy teenage movie. He had to be tall, blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and very athletic. Which come to think of it that was exactly Christian.

I met Beth in middle school. Her and her dad moved from Nashville to come to live here in Maine. All the kids in our grade at the time believed she was vain and arrogant. When in reality she was the nicest person you could know. She had big curly red hair, dark green eyes, and a very strong southern accent. And lastly she was my best friend. I still don't how Harry knew her, because in the twenty-four hours of meeting him I didn't mention her name once.

"Can I talk to you for a second?"
"Sure babe." Christian answered.
"I actually meant Harry." I said awkwardly. I waited til Harry stood up before I left the dining room. Just as we were leaving I heard my mom whisper to my dad. "I feel like I've seen him before. He looks oddly familiar." She said. I walked out of listening distance so my family wouldn't hear. I stopped in the middle of the hallway that led to my dad's garage.

"What were you thinking?" I whispered yelled.

"Calm down no one suspects anything." He laughed.

"This isn't funny. And Beth? You had to say her name?"
"It was the first name that came to mind." He replied.

"How do you even know about her? I don't remember mentioning her."I said. He didn't answer right away. He looked past me like he was in a daze. "Have you gone insane?" I said shaking his shoulders.

"I don't know maybe?" He answered calmly. "I'm in a nightmare." I said walking in circle while clutching my head. I stopped walking when I saw my reflection in one of my mom's picture frames. Brown strands of hair was all over my head and my eyes were still a bit swollen. Still fixated on my hair I undid the messy side braid and ran my fingers through my hair to try and straighten it. I could see out the corner of my eye Harry was looking at me.

"What?" I turned to him. "Nothing do you remember much from a last night?" He asked. "Nothing in particular." I said. I remember the events that occurred last night and then nothing at all. I could have sworn it was a dream. But just like all his cryptic sentences Harry stopped talking when Christian came walking towards us.

"So what time do you think you'll be ready?" He said draping his left arm around my shoulders.

"Ready for what ?"

"You know the Masquerade party. It's our towns tradition. We go every year. Don't tell me you forgot." Christian moaned. "No I didn't forget it just slipped my mind." I told him truthfully. I had forgotten all about the town's Annual Mavis Masquerade.
It's the most celebrated event here in our small town in Maine. The girls go all out finding their extravagant gowns and mask. "I'm guessing you'll be there with Elizabeth?" Christian asked him. "I wouldn't miss." Harry said.

"Did you and Beth go dress shopping yet ?" Christian asked me.

"I was suppose to go pick it up with Beth yesterday but.." My voiced trailed off. The two of them continued to talk and I didn't bother to listen. While they were talking I kept thinking about this whole situation. It was like a ticking bomb. It was going to explode eventually. I had to explain to my friend that she had to pretend she had a boyfriend that just so happens to be dead.

I was too trapped inside my mind that I didn't notice Christian had left. I was left alone with Harry once again. "What are we going to do this is getting out control." I said slightly freaking out. "Are you some kind of stalker poltergeist?"

He smiled even more. "Maybe."

I nodded my head. "An honest stalker."

"Honest?" "Well if you say so." He said. It felt like I was on the verge of having a panic attack. I just kept repeating the same thing. "You aren't real...You aren't real...You aren't real."

Harry placed his hands on my shoulders to try and calms me down . "Breathe Victoria." He said in a comforting voice. I soon began to calm down. I closed my eyes shut and still kept chanting the same words "You aren't real." It was official I had lost it.

I was completely taken aback at what he did next. He kissed me. It didn't feel like a first kiss to me. For some reason i'm guessing he did it to shut me up. So no one could hear me. Teenage hormones must have shoved me aside, because I started kissing him back.

He pulled me closer yet I didn't feel close enough. He wrapped his arm around my waist and I found my hand tangled in his hair. I knew this was wrong because I had Christian and he could have still been in my house or worse standing right there in the hallway. I still didn't bother to open my eyes to check.

Everything around seemed to have stopped. Instead I was pushed against the wall and I was quickly getting short of breath, I still didn't break out kiss. It was Harry who pulled away, but he didn't open his eyes. His face was inches away from mine.

"I have to go." He said holding the side of my face with his free hand and his forehead on mine. "What?" I said breathlessly. He bent down and gave me one last kiss and I could feel him slipping away. It was a kiss that stole my breathe and left me incredibly weak. When I opened my eyes Harry was gone.

I got my answer. Harry was indeed becoming real. While I was the one who was slowly fading away..
