The Last Goodbye

Almost There

"Did I hear one of you mention going on a road trip?" My mother asked us as she tighten the knot on her bathrobe. My mind as usual went black under confrontation.

I looked over at Beth to see if she had come up with a better story to tell her than I could. Beth stared back at me hoping I would to the same. It was Harry who surprisingly spoke the first word.

"Yes we were planning on going up to New Hampshire." He bluntly stated. "And why do the three you have to go there?" Mom asked this time looking at me.

"A wedding!" Beth chimed in. "Harry's. . . aunt . . . is getting married there this weekend." She nodded. "Oh you have family that live here in the states?" Mom said asking Harry. "This news was also new to me as well." Harry said. Beth reacted to his comment by hitting him in the chest with the back of her hand. He tried to mask the pain by laughing.

"And we wanted Victoria to come with us." Beth added.

"What day is it ?" My mom asked me. "Friday." I answered finally speaking. Her eyebrows pursed together. "It's the middle of April, which means you still have school." She said. I knew I still had to go see Niall. Even if it meant breaking a couple of rules.

"Yeah I was just telling them that before you walked down her." I said with my back facing my mom and my eyes attached to Beth hoping she would play along.

"Right. . . what a bummer." She said.

"Sorry guys but you're both welcomed to stay for breakfa-" Mom said with her sentence being cut off by a long yawn. She turned around and went back up stairs. More than likely going back to sleep. "Okay I'm confused?" Beth asked.

"I'm still going I'm just not going to tell her. " I smiled. Beth examined me then put her hands on her hips.

"Look at miss goody too shoes. I'm impressed I've trained you well." Beth says as her phones rings. "It's my dad I'll call you later to sort out all the details. " She abruptly says as she makes her way back to the front door. Before she could let her self out she turns sharply on her heels. "You did it after all." She winked at Harry and closed the door.

"You did what?" I curiously asked. "I don't remember." He answered. I rolled my eyes and laughed.

"Of course you don't." I said. "Seriously Victoria I don't remember. It took me a second to even remember who she was." Harry said again looking disgruntled.

"Are you always this forgetful?" I asked him wrapping my hand around his wrist. "I'm not even sure."

First it started with me seeing images in front of me that weren't really there. Now Harry is beginning to lose his memory. I can only wonder what is going to happen next.

The next few days went by so quickly like leaves in the wind. There one minute gone the next. One Tuesday Beth told me she finally asked Christian to come with us. Honestly I was surprised he even wanted to go. I hadn't talked with him since the dance and had been avoiding all of his a calls. I felt a pang of guilt not because I told him a kissed someone else and left it at that. I felt guilty for not having guilt.

And was it terrible of me for allowing Harry to stay in my house hidden away in my room. Ever since last Sunday Harry's been exactly there. He's gone when I wake up, but there when I'm about to sleep. It's embarrassing really because most nights I wake up in the middle of the night literally screaming. I can never go back and try and think of what it was that frightened me in my sleep. And then there's Harry he been acting different. He's starting to forget things quicker now. He could say or do something a few hours ago and then shortly forget it. The even stranger thing is I'm starting to worry about him. But how could I worry for someone like Harry? Even from the time I met him I knew he wasn't permanent.

"So how would you explain Niall to me?" I asked Harry as I got clothes out of my dresser to pack in my duffel bag. Harry curved his mouth up and sat on the edge of my bed. "Irish." He said faintly laughing. His eyes drifted away like he was thinking about him.

"How are you planning on leaving with your parents still in the house?" Harry asked me trying to think of something else.

"Easy." I said, I folded a shirt and placed it in the bag. "I told my mom that Beth said she wasn't going anymore and invited me to sleep over at her house. " I added.

"And your mom just believed you?" He asked me pulling out the shirt I just folded. "Yes." I say to him grabbing the shirt out of his grasp.

"A few weeks ago you would have never done this."

"That's because a few weeks ago I wasn't having the same nightmare over and over again. " I said zipping up my overnight bag. "Speaking of clothes you could, use some more." I told him eyeing his same all black outfit.

"What's wrong with this?" He said as he propped himself on the bed with his elbows. I shook my head. "You're such a boy." A small decorative pillow then came flying my way. I reacted by reaching for the stuffed bear behind me and I hit him on the top of the head.
Resulting into a war.

"I surrender!" I breathlessly laughed waving up a white pillow case in the air. I laid with my back on the bed trying to regulate my heartbeat. Harry laid down beside me doing the same. "Were the two of you close?" I asked him staring at the side of his face while he stared up at the ceiling.

"We were pretty close. I confided in him more than I did the others." He admitted.

"Aww! So you two were like a bromance?" I teased. "Very funny." He said.

"Are you nervous about seeing him again?" I asked. He turned his head sideways and our eyes locked on each other. "No I'm just worried about you and how you'll take whatever he has to tell you." Harry said. "You don't have the best track record when hearing things you don't like." He laughed. We both did.

I looked at him examining the way strands of his long curly brown hair fallen into his face. Instead of the green all I saw in his eyes was the grief that stains them. I wanted the words "I'm sorry" to come out, but I just couldn't manage to say it. To say sorry for everything. Instead of talking I just watched his eyes til I saw the blacks of my eyelids. I didn't want to close my eyes because of the terrified feeling that would sure to come. Just the thought of him being here next to me for when I wake seemed to help me forget that I wasn't completely alone.

The day we originally planned on leaving finally arrived. I came home from school that afternoon to see that Beth was already there waiting by a truck. As I pulled into the driveway I saw Christian was with her cradling his broken arm. The two of them stood next to a huge black four door pick up truck. I got out of the car and they both walked over to me.

"Hey." Christian said sounding like he was in a mood.

"What happened to your arm?" I asked with the upmost of sincerity. "I broke it." He answered flatly.

"Sorry." I said quietly.

"At least your sorry for something." Christian spat before he stormed off and got in the back seat of the truck.

"Ignore him. You know how he gets." Beth said brushing him off. "What's with the truck I thought we were taking your car?" I asked her looking at it again.

"A lot of crap things started happening to it ; needed new tires, oil needed to be change, and the light for my airbags kept flashing." She explained. "Dad put it in the shop so-" Beth said holding both her hands out towards it.

"Shouldn't we be one the road now and don't we have to pick up that boyfriend of yours?"Christian said to Beth leaning his head out of the back window. "Where is Harry?" She asked me.

"Give me two minutes and we'll be out. " I say going around her. "Wait!" She handed me a big white shopping bag. "Give this to him." Beth said. I took the bag from her hand and hopped inside.

I dropped my messenger bag on the floor and ran up the stairs. I got stopped by my dad before I could completely finish. "Slow down Sonic." He said. I looked down at him over the railing. "You know the blue hedgehog that ran really fast?"He said again not letting it go.

"Who?" I asked him not understanding what he's taking about.

"Never mind, what causes you to be in such a rush and why is there a truck parked outside the house?"

"I need my overnight bag from my room, cause I'm spending a couple nights over at Beth's house." I said also telling the lie to him. I tapped my had along the railing waiting for his response. "Well get to it Lighting McQueen." Dad laughed. I kept going up the stairs.

"Come on! That's an old Disney film." He yelled. "I know!" I yelled back.

Once I got to my room the door was already open. I saw my little sister sitting in the middle on the floor crouched over crying as she held onto something. I paused in the middle of the door the frame hesitating before walking in. Harry emerged from a corner of the room with a brown cardboard shoebox in his hands and a marker in his mouth.

"Why did Jasper have to go?" Chloe choked out.

I slowly walked over to her and saw that her brown and white rabbit was wrapped in a towel in her arms dead. "I don't think he wanted to leave you." Harry told Chloe.

"He wasn't just a pet to me he was also my friend." She said her crying becoming worse. I knelt down beside her and wrapped my left arm around her to keep her from shaking so much. "I don't doubt that he wasn't you friend and good I'm sure." He said trying to force a smile on his face. Harry grabbed the rabbit in the towel from Chloe and placed it in the box. After he put the top on it her scribbled Jasper's name on it. Chloe's face was bright red and her light blue eyes were filled with tears. Harry curved his hand to wipe always the fallen ones.

"Right now you're sad and hurt, but Jasper wouldn't want you to cry for him. He would want you too smile and remember that cool times you guys shared." Slowly Chloe's whimpering started to fade. "Even though he is gone he would still want you to know he loves you. . . very very much. " Harry spoke this time looking over Chloe's head and at me.

I kissed the top of her head and wrapped my other arm around her. "Take him to dad ." I whispered to her. She followed the instructions and left. A second later she came back in and ran over to Harry to hug him. She squeezed my hand to gesture it as a thanks. Then she was gone. "That was morbid."

I said. "Tell me about it. What's that?" Harry asked pointing at the bag next to me. "This is for you actually Beth told me to give it to you." I told him. He looked inside the bag and laughed.
"It's filled with flannels and torn jeans at the knee." He laughed. Then he let out a sigh

"Looks familiar."

The inside of the truck was quaint. Harry and Christian sat in the back. The backseat was so small that there knees could touch there chins almost. I buckled my seatbelt then started the engine. "Do I really have to do this?" I asked Beth one last time.

"Like you stated I'm not the safest driver, Christian's arm is broken, and Harry can even drive on the right side of the road?"

"Speaking of Harry why was he at Victoria's house?" Christian asked. "I told him to meet us here." Beth told him. Christian sat back in his seat til another wandering question popped in his head.

"But isn't he your boyfriend." He asked Beth leaning his head between Beth and I. "She needed help moving stuff, because clearly you are incapable at the moment." Harry said to him. I had to turn my head away so that know one would see me smiling. With that said I put it in drive.

Almost two hours down the road and Christian is still talking. At this point I don't think he will ever stop. "What happens if our parents find out we ditched school?" Christian wryly asked.

"Relax cowboy your just missing one day." Beth said as she flipped through a vintage gossip magazine.

"Look who's on the cover." She said loud enough so only I could hear. There were a few other celebrities on the cover but the main focus was clearly on one direction. Aside from Harry I recognized the blonde one. I took one hand off the steering wheel to tap his picture."That one is Niall." Beth held the magazine closer to her face.

"I think I found my favorite." She whistled.

"That picture if from a long time ago." I told her. "I don't care how old it is. No one can rob him of his good looks." She said looking at the photo once more. I focused my eyes on the road again, but quickly glanced at it again. One of the other guys looked familiar to me. I was going a little crazy trying to place it in my head.

Until I did.

"What is his name?" I asks Beth. She squinted her eyes the recited his name.

"Zayn."
