Summer Love

eleven.

Four weeks later, Mae and Doniya were sitting in Mae’s room looking through Cosmo magazines and eating Chips Ahoy! cookies, with glasses of milk to wash them down. If the two girls weren’t down by the water soaking up the sun, this is what they were doing, and it had become a nasty habit. If the boys were down by the beach, which was quite often, the girls would go inside and look through girl magazines and eat unhealthy snacks to get some private time. And it was some of the best ‘girl time’ that Mae had ever had with a friend.

“So, have you asked your parents about going to Disney with me and the rest of the guys, yet?” Doniya asked curiously as she flipped through the magazine she was looking at, and Mae knew it had to be the fourth time Doniya had looked through it since summer began.

“No,” Mae replied casually. “Are you tired of that magazine, yet?”

“Nah,” she sighed. “I usually find something new every time I look through it,” she looked up at Mae and cocked her head to the side. “Why haven’t you asked? We leave tomorrow morning. And you know Niall is dying for you to go.”

“I just don’t think they’re going to be okay with me going with five guys and just you,” Mae commented. “They’ve always been kind of weird about that stuff.”

“But you know you and I are going to have our own room, right?” Doniya questioned. “If you don’t go, I have to share with Zayn and Niall. Gross.”

“I know,” Mae smiled. “I don’t know how they’ll feel about it though.”

“Talk to them tonight, please?” she pleaded, jutting out her bottom lip. “Pretty please, Mae.”

“I will,” Mae promised.

“Mom, Dad?” Mae called later that night, after Doniya had left. She wandered down the stairs and into the family room to see her parents sitting together on the couch watching a movie. When LeeAnn saw her daughter enter the room, she grabbed the DVD remote and paused the movie.

“Yes, dear?” she replied.

“I want to ask you guys something,” Mae said cautiously as she sat down in the Lay-Z-Boy. As much as she did want to go to Disney with her friends (Yes, as the weeks began to pass she did get to know the rest of the guys personally), she was worried about what her parents would say. Her parents never really told her no, unless it had to do with going over night with boys. Mae never lied to her parents, and her parents knew that, and it wasn’t that they didn’t trust their daughter; they were just worried about her safety and Mae knew that.

Both of her parents looked at her, waiting for her to continue.

“Can I go to Disney with Doniya and the guys for, like, five days?” Mae asked, her tone slow as her gaze shifted from her mom to her dad, unable to read their expressions.

Tom sighed at his daughter’s question. “Who are you and Doniya going to be rooming with?”

“We’re rooming together, and the other guys are going to room together,” she replied.

“And what about the cost of the room and tickets?” LeeAnn wondered. “Did you bring enough money to go to Disney World for five days, Mae?”

“I have my debit card…” she trailed off. “And I do have some extra cash that I’ve brought. And they’re leaving tomorrow morning at like six to get there by seven or 7:30.”

“Well, thank you for the heads up,” Tom commented, still sounding as if he wasn’t approving of the idea of Mae being alone with one girl and five boys for nearly a week. He shook his head and sighed. “It’s up to your mom.”

Mae glanced at her mom with pleading eyes.

LeeAnn looked at her daughter and sighed softly. “Since it’s not even far at all, and since we know all of the boys and Doniya, then I guess it’s fine. But you be sure to call us if anything happens, and we will be there to pick you up.”

“I will. Don’t worry,” Mae said, grinning as she heaved a sigh of relief. “Thanks, guys.”

The next morning, Niall groaned as light flooded the room and nearly blinded him. He flipped over onto his stomach and sighed loudly. “Who the hell turned on the light?”

“Me,” Harry said, not bothered by Niall’s clipped tone. “We need to start getting ready to leave for Disney. You know Mae’s coming, right?”

“She is?” Niall said happily, suddenly waking up. He turned onto his side and looked at Harry, his eyes nearly open.

“Sure is,” he nodded. “Get ready.”

Niall smiled to himself as he slid out of bed, and he was a little bit more excited about the trip now. If Mae wasn’t able to go he would’ve been a bit of a downer, and he knew it. He would have to go five days without speaking to her when he has been in contact with her every day. And he had never been to Disney World before, and he knew with someone like Mae around he would have a lot more fun.

He and Mae weren’t dating officially yet, but Niall was getting to the point where he was wanting to ask her out at any moment. He didn’t like the fact that they kissed like a couple, went on dates like a couple, were together all the time like a couple, but weren’t technically a couple. He was never a quick mover when it came to asking girls out, but he was definitely surprised that he had gone this long with how much time he had spent with Mae.

And maybe Disney was the perfect time to make that move.

He couldn’t suppress his yawn as he pulled out his suitcase and started to toss clothes for the trip into it. He glanced over at Liam and Harry to see both of them already with their suitcases packed and both of them waiting to use the bathroom. After Niall filled his suitcase with enough clothes and shoes for the five days, he changed into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt as Louis walked into the room, dressed and ready to go.

“I bet you’re excited,” he commented as he sat on Harry’s bed. Niall walked into the unoccupied bathroom and flipped on the light, so he could fix his hair and brush his teeth.

“I am,” Niall confirmed as he combed his hair. “I didn’t see her much yesterday.”

“You saw her for three hours,” Louis chuckled. “How is that not much?”

Niall rolled his eyes and smiled softly, before grabbing his toothbrush and brushing his teeth. Once he was done getting ready, as if planned, there was a knock on the door. Niall flipped off the light and rushed down the stairs towards the front door. Doniya ran into the foyer from where she was in the kitchen and opened the front door to reveal Mae standing there with her suitcase in hand.

“Beat you to it,” Doniya teased as she smiled at Niall, who rolled his eyes. Doniya turned to Mae. “Come on in. The guys are almost done getting ready.”

“I’ll go put your suitcase in the car,” Niall offered, after placing a quick kiss on Mae’s cheek, not wanting to kiss her on the lips in case she felt uncomfortable around everyone else. She smiled at him as he took her suitcase and walked out the front door, only to be stopped by Doniya.

“Wanna take mine while you’re at it, Niall?” she asked, handing Niall her suitcase.

Niall sighed to himself and grabbed Doniya’s suitcase before walking down the porch stairs and towards the van that Zayn would be driving them to Disney in.
