Summer Love

ten.

“What time is it?” Mae asked Niall curiously.

“Three in the morning,” Niall said as he checked his cell phone, which now only had 5% battery. “Did we really just lay here and talk all night?”

Mae’s eyes widened slightly at the thought of her parents going to bed without her. She was surprised they hadn’t come out at midnight looking for her, but she was more surprised in the fact that she had been lying in Niall’s arms and talking with him since after dinner last night. The time passed by quickly as they laughed together and looked up at the stars and talked about pointless things, that Mae hadn’t realized it was already three in the morning.

Figuring that Mae wasn’t going to respond, Niall sat up slowly. “I’m surprised none of the guys came after me, or even texted me. Did your parents text you?”

“No,” Mae said, shaking her head, already knowing that if her parents were that worried they would have called her and demanded she come home. She looked at Niall and smiled softly. “Sorry.”

Niall gave her a puzzled look. “For?”

“Keeping you from your sleep,” she stated.

“If you were keeping me from something more important than talking to you, I would have told you, Mae,” Niall said, a smile forming on his lips. “I enjoyed talking to you all night.”

“I did, too,” Mae said shyly as she sat up. “We better go in and get some sleep so we can get up and go fishing tomorrow.”

Niall nodded in agreement, before standing up. He held his hands out to Mae, and once he helped her up they both brushed off the sand that managed to cling to their clothes. Niall grabbed Mae’s hand as they started through the sand back towards Mae’s rental house, and Mae yawned, realizing she was a lot more tired than she was two minutes ago when she and Niall were lying in the sand having a conversation.

Once they made it up the porch stairs, Niall retrieved his socks and slipped them on while Mae walked into the house to get him his shoes, being quiet and careful that she didn’t disturb her parent’s sleep. When she came back outside, she handed Niall his shoes and he slipped them on.

“So, do you want me to come pick you up tomorrow before we go fishing?” he asked curiously. “Does 2:30 sound okay? Or will you need more sleep than that?”

“That sounds fine,” Mae said, a tiny smile appearing on her face. “I’m excited to go fishing.”

“Don’t be; I’m not too great,” he chuckled. After he successfully got his shoes on and tied them, he sighed to himself and stood up. “I’ll swing by tomorrow then at 2:30.”

Mae nodded before giving Niall a tight hug, inhaling the strong, yet pleasing, scent of his cologne that she didn’t remember him wearing the first night they went out. “Are you wearing cologne?”

Niall pulled away, a smile lingering on his lips. “I may or may not have bought it when I was out with the guys yesterday. Do you not like it?”

“No, I like it,” she giggled. “It’s nice.”

“Good,” he grinned, before placing a soft kiss on Mae’s lips, causing butterflies to erupt in her gut. “I’ll see you later.”

Mae nodded, a wide smile on her face, with hot, red cheeks to compliment her grin. After watching Niall walk down the porch stairs and head towards his house, she walked inside quietly and made her way up to her bedroom, the grin never leaving her face.

At 11:56 am, Mae rolled out of her bed and strolled into her bathroom to get ready for the day. Even though she wasn’t going fishing at the pier with Niall for another two and a half hours, she wanted to get what she needed to do out of the way. Flipping on the bathroom light, she squinted her eyes as they adjusted to the bright light. She turned on the shower, and as she let the water heat up she quickly brushed her teeth and stripped off her clothes.

As she let the hot water wet her hair and warm her chilled body, her mind wandered back to last night. Her smile was uncontrollable as she thought about how she and Niall talked from after dinner until three in the morning, and she would be lying if she said they ran out of things to talk about. Even if it was stupid or irrelevant, Niall and Mae could have an interesting conversation about any brought up subject, and their time together never got boring.

And the way that Niall had his arm around Mae the whole night, and the way he held her, made her feel happy, excited, and wanted. She was never completely herself around guys, not wanting them to judge her because she was weird or completely inexperienced to the male species, but Niall allowed her to be herself. He didn’t care if she was weird, or if something she said was stupid; that was what Mae really liked about him. She could already open up to him about anything, and he wasn’t going to judge her for her opinion, even if he didn’t agree.

When Mae finished her shower she stepped out and after she wrapped a towel around herself, she walked into her room to find an outfit for the day. She opened her closet and studied the selection of clothing in front of her for a few minutes until pulling out a white halter top and a pair of jean shorts. After getting herself dressed, Mae slipped on a pair of white flip flops and made her way back into the bathroom, where she did her make up.

“Good morning,” Mae said, once she made it downstairs and outside to see her dad sitting on the back porch in the sun.

“Good afternoon would be a better greeting,” Tom said jokingly as he looked up at his daughter. “What time did you get in last night?”

“Three…” Mae muttered as she sat down in a chair and faced the sun. “Where’s mom?”

“She ran to the store to get some things for dinner,” he answered.

It was quiet between Tom and his daughter, before Mae sighed softly. “So?”

“So?”

“Did you…like Niall?” She wondered. “Did mom like him?”

“We liked him…” her dad trailed off.

“But?” Mae pushed, turning to face her dad, knowing that there was something else.

“I think it’s really great that you’ve met someone to spend your time with, hon. I really do,” he began. “But, don’t you think it’s kind of silly with him being all the way from England? You’re just going to get your feelings hurt.”

Mae looked down, knowing that her dad was right (not that she was going to listen to him). “I’m trying not to think about that,” she replied quietly. “I just wanted to enjoy the summer.”

“I understand that, but in the long run you’re just going to get upset when you both leave and go back to your normal lives,” Tom sighed, feeling bad to slap his daughter in the face with reality. “You’re going to be starting college, Mae.”

“What does that have to do with it?” Mae shrugged.

“You don’t need some English boy, who’s miles and miles away to distract you,” he answered.

“He’s Irish,” she corrected him. “And I’m not worried about that now. I’ll be okay. Was he really that bad?”

Tom chuckled. “No, Mae. I thought Niall was a very well-mannered boy. He made me laugh without being inappropriate, he was nice, he was not rude whatsoever, and he charmed your mother. I just want you to be aware of what may happen after these next couple months.”

“I know, I’m aware,” Mae said, letting out another sigh. “It’ll suck, but I’ll be alright.”

“Are you going out with him again today?”

“At 2:30 we’re going fishing on the pier,” Mae said, a smile forming on her lips as she thought of spending another day with Niall.

“Well, have fun with him,” Tom said as he looked at his daughter. “And if you’re wanting to eat before, you can heat up some leftover breakfast that mom made this morning while you were still getting your beauty sleep.”

Mae just nodded as she rose to her feet, before heading inside the house and fixing herself lunch.

Notes
