Story of my Life

Chapter Two

Back in America, Jenna had always raved to me about this band called One Direction. I'd listened to some of their music and I had to admit that they were decent, but I had never been obsessive over them or even called myself a fan. Jenna wasn't even a fan. No, she was a Directioner. But, even though I had never experienced some twisted fantasy about me bowing at Harry Styles' feet, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed at the sight of him standing before me.

Harry was staring up at the menu, his brow furrowed as his flicked over it. He was wearing a plain white T-shirt and blue jeans, his hair looking a bit messy in my opinion. Then again, I couldn't really blame him; it was only almost nine o'clock in the morning. I stared him up and down, struggling to get my mind around this.

Before I could say anything, Harry turned back to me and smiled. "I'll just have a plain coffee, if that's okay."

"I-uh, yeah. O-Okay. I-sure." I stuttered like a moron, walking jerkily to the cash register and fumbling to tap in the numbers. "That'll be $1.29."

Without any hesitation, Harry handed me a $2 bill. I took it from him slowly, careful not to touch him. I didn't know what I was thinking; would he feel cold and dead? Would he feel plastic? Would he evaporate? I knew none of this was possible, but a part of my mind told me that he wasn't real and that I was just seeing things. However, when I handed the boy back his change, my fingers brushed his. Rather than him feeling alien and unreal, he was warm, just like any other human being. Harry Styles truly was standing right in front of me.

Harry was quiet as I prepared his coffee. He stared at the ceiling and the tables and the chairs. He seemed to be sizing up the place, trying to get a feel for it. I watched him, wondering if he could feel me staring. He must get stared at a lot.

I gently slid the coffee cup towards Harry when it was finished, still not terribly comfortable with this situation. He took it without even blinking, giving me a smile before turning around and plopping himself in a chair, wiggling his phone from his pocket and vanishing inside whatever he was looking at on there, absentmindedly tapping his foot in a terribly annoying manner.

At first, I just stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do. Employees were never told what to do when this kind of thing happens. There is no, "What to do when a Super hot Celebrity walks through your Doors" manual. I wasn't going to freak out on him; I was never that much of a fan of their work anyway. But did I just continue on my way and simply act like he was a normal person and totally forget about him the moment he leaves?

My thoughts were shattered as the bell above the door tinkled cheerfully again. Harry glanced up from his phone, but his eyes instantly slid back to the small screen; nobody important, I suppose.

I, too, looked up to see who had arrived, but was fairly disappointed to see who it was. It was the snobby business man who showed up every morning around this time. He was incredibly rude to me and everyone else, and he usually ruined the rest of my work day.

"Good morning." I muttered, the shock of seeing Harry evaporating on the spot.

"Good morning." the man said briskly, not even glancing up at me. "The usual, please." He dug in his pocket for his wallet, not even bothering to specify what "the usual" was. Thankfully, he had been here enough times for me to get used to what he ordered.

I finished the man's coffee as quickly as I could, knowing it would do me no good to keep him waiting. I handed him the cup, hoping he would turn around and leave. But, as usual, he did not.

"This place could do with some cleaning up." The snobbish man looking disdainfully around, his eyes skimming over the tearing wallpaper and the cracks in the ceiling. "Yes, yes it could." With that, he turned and left. I was lucky to have gotten away with so little criticism.

I was about to go back to pretending to clean the place, but Harry's voice startled me. "He's a ray of sunshine, isn't he? Does he come in here every morning?"

I looked up to see that the boy was staring straight at me. I blinked, unsure of what to say for a moment until my mind cleared. "Er, yeah. He comes in here every day. I have no idea who he is or why he continues to come here if he finds it such a dump."

"I don't think it's that bad." Harry took another approving look around the room, then stood up and disposed of his empty coffee cup, slipping his phone back into his pocket. I was hoping he would leave, just so we could avoid more awkward conversation, but he waltzed right up to me and stuck out his hand.

"Harry, if you didn't already know." he said without hesitation.

I stared at Harry's hand for a little while, then timidly shook it. "Yeah, I know. My friend is a, how do you say it? Directioner? I've had to hear about you a lot." I paused, then decided that I should introduce myself. "I'm Megan."

Harry grinned. "Oh. Yeah, it surprises me how many fans we've accumulated over the years." He was quiet for a moment before tipping his head slightly to one side. "You aren't a fan?"

"Not really." I said truthfully. I decided to steal another look at him, quickly letting my eyes drift over his face and then down to his feet. He was tall. Really tall.

Harry seemed to have watched my eyes because he was grinning wider than ever. "Ah." He leaned against the counter, his shirt riding up a bit to expose a tiny sliver of flesh. I refused to look anywhere but his eyes at that point.

There was silence between me and the cheeky little jerk for a little while before Harry pushed himself off the counter with his hands and backed away. "I'd better get going. See you around?"

I fixed him with an unimpressed stare, then turned my back to him. I wasn't amused with him in the very least. Sure, I didn't know him very well, but I wasn't one to go for flirts like him.

Harry snorted. "I'll take that as a yes." The bell jingled once more, signaling his departure.

I relaxed ever so slightly and leaned my back against the wall, turning to face the door. Just wait until Jenna finds out who I've talked to today.

Notes

Ahh it's really sucky today...I'm getting a little sick and my brain isn't working so well. I'm having trouble spelling correctly, haha. Let's hope the next few chapters get a little bit better.
