Terrible Little Things

Chapter Nine

“So, Niall, you thought it’d be a good idea to announce your relationship with Elizabeth over twitter, without consulting me?” Simon asked as we sat at the chairs in front of his desk.
“It was my fault,” I said quickly. “Last night, we had a bit of a disagreement, and to make me happy, he went public. I overreacted, about everything, really.” I took the fall for Niall, hoping that Simon would direct his frustration towards me rather than him.
“Well, to be honest, I am disappointed that you didn’t come to me first to actually tell me you two were dating,” He said. My eyes widened and I turned to Niall, “You didn’t tell him?”
“I thought Liam did! Simon, I’m so sorry!” He said frantically. Simon shook his head, “That isn’t a problem. Because of the randomness in your announcement, there’s a lot of doubt about your relationship.”
“What can we do to fix that,” Niall questioned. “You and the boys don’t have anything planned for today, so just walk around the city like the perfectly happy couple you are. It’ll give the fans a piece of mind.”
Niall scoffed, “The ‘fans’ constantly hate on Elizabeth. How is this gonna help?”
“Maybe if they see just how happy she makes you, they’ll back down,” Simon said simply. I pulled on Niall’s hand, “Niall, babe, he knows what he’s talking about.” He looks at me and smiled, his eyes brightening.
“See? That’s what I’m talking about! You two have this air of complete bliss that just radiates off of you,” Simon commented.
“AREN’T THEY CUTE!?” Louis shouted, bursting into the room. Simon just chuckled at the flamboyant 20 year old waltzing into the office like he owned the place.
“Hey, guys, what are you doing here?” I asked the other boys as they sat at the couch next to Niall’s chair. They all shrugged.
“I had a little announcement of my own,” Simon spoke up. Everyone turned their attention to him. “You guys are performing at the VMAs next weekend!”
We were silent for a minute before cheering and clapping. “Unfortunately, we only have two extra tickets, and you have four girlfriends. Good luck working that out! Now, I have an important meeting in five minutes. Have a nice day!” We stared blankly at Simon. It took us a second to recover, but we eventually ended up on the sidewalk. “I can’t go,” I whispered.
“Why not?” Niall asked with a pout. “I have this shoot with Italian Vogue….it’s like a once in a lifetime opportunity, I can’t just pass it up. I’m so sorry,” I whispered. “ITALIAN VOGUE? Liz, that’s amazing. Do it. It’s okay, I understand, 100%.”
I looked up at Niall and smiled, “Really?” He nodded instantly. “Really.” I wrapped my arms against his torso and buried my face in his neck. “Thanks, Ni.”
“YOU TWO ARE GONNA MAKE US VOMIT! JUST GET MARRIED, HAVE SEX, AND HAVE PRETTY BABIES!” Louis freaked out. Niall and I laughed at him. “We’re gonna go, spend some time in the city. We’ll see you tomorrow, yeah?” Niall said to the boys. They all nodded and I gave them hugs before we went our separate ways.
“There’s a carnival at the park in the middle of the city. Wanna walk there?” He asked me. “Are you kidding? I LOVE carnivals! The Ferris wheels, the cotton candy, the games. Why are we still standing here! LET’S GO!” I grabbed his hand and ran in the general direction of the park.
“Elizabeth! Liz….wait….too…fast!” He wheezed as we reached the entrance of the park. “How does someone with a perfect 6 pack and V-line, not have the ability to run 4 blocks?” I asked him. He playfully scoffed and rolled his eyes, “Those are for show.”
I tilted my head, slightly confused. “Did they make you stutter and wonder why you still have ovaries?” He asked. Sheepishly, I nodded. “Then that means it works. Come on, let’s get tickets. My treat.”
I rolled my eyes and followed him to the ticket booth where he bought two tickets. “Where to first, milady?” He asked in a horrible British accent as we entered the gates.
I looked around the fair grounds and smiled, already feeling like a kid again. “COTTON CANDY!” I shouted I dragged him to the stand and bought 2 super large cotton candies. “It’s like a cloud on a stick,” I mumbled with mouth full of cotton candy. We were walking around and I caught Niall staring at me. “Is there something on my face?”
He smiled at me, “No. Well, yes, some cotton candy,” He wiped off some of the pink fluffy candy from my chin. “You’re just, extremely beautiful,” He said, his Irish accent making my stomach do flips. My cheeks flamed red and I looked away. “OHMYGOD! Look at the puppy! Look at it!” Niall grabbed my hand and dragged me to one of the carnival games.
“5 balls, please,” He said to the young guy at the stand. He handed over the money and took the ball in his hand. He threw the first one and it missed the milk bottles completely. “Uh, Niall, you know that, to win, it has to hit the bottles, right?” I said to him. He looked over and stared blankly at me. “Really?” I had noooo idea,” His voice dripped with sarcasm.
I shrugged and smiled, “Just trying to be helpful.” He missed the next three times and I couldn’t stop laughing. A small crowd of girls gathered around to watch their celebrity crush, fail at a carnival game. He took a deep breath and aimed the ball. He brought his hand back and threw the ball.
It was like one of those movie scenes where everything falls silent and goes in slow motion. It’s just you and the ball. Niall, the girls, the guy working at the stand, and I watched as the ball slowly flew to towards the milk bottles. Finally, it made contact, and one by one the bottles fell.
Everyone cheered and clapped. “I want the big puppy!” Niall shouted. The guy got it off the top shelf and handed it to me. “For you. Because you two are beyond cute,” He smiled. “Aww,” I cooed and pecked him on the lips. I heard the distant click-click-clicks of professional DSLR cameras. We pulled away from the lingering peck.
“Picture time!” I said. I pulled out my phone and held it in front of us. He was holding the puppy and our heads were together with stupid grins on out faces.
@Elizabeth_Hanover: Carnival with @NiallOfficial. Look what he won! Too cute xx
The amount of followers I had sky rocketed after the time Harry and I wore matching shirts and tweeted it. But now, it nearly tripled. “We’re adorable,” I said as we walked away hand in hand.

A full moon had risen over London and Niall and I were still having an amazing time at the fair. We were riding on a sugar high and couldn’t help but laugh at everything. “You did not do that!” I teased, throwing a fry at Niall from my spot across from him at the picnic table. “I did! I swear I didn’t know that’s what a condom looks like. I was 8!” He laughed. “That’s extremely funny, Ni.”
He smiled and out his hands under his chin. “You are such a cupcake,” I smiled. I looked around the fair grounds and smiled widely at all the twinkly lights. I pulled out my phone and took a picture, sending it to twitter.
@Elizabeth_Hanover: Under the lights tonight, you stole my heart <3 xx
“AWW THAT’S SO CUTE LIZ!” Niall said looking down at his phone. “You quoted one of our songs!” He cooed. I laughed and looked at the Ferris wheel. “Let’s go on the Ferris Wheel,” I suggested. Niall nodded and we stood up. I picked up Larry—the stuffed puppy—and Niall picked up the cardboard tray that our fries once sat in, and threw it away.
He grabbed my hand and we walked towards the line for the Ferris wheel. Once we stepped on the little booth, I placed Larry between us. “How upset do you think Lou and Haz will be when they find out we named the stuffed animal after them?” I asked him.
“Pretty upset,” He nodded then shrugged, “They’ll get over it.” I smiled and the wheel started moving upwards.
Eventually, we were at the top. There was a slight wind, making my long blonde hair fly in different directions. London is a beautiful city, from the ground, during the day. But seeing an aerial view of it at night, with all the lights, it was absolutely breathtaking. “It’s…beautiful,” I breathed, staring at Big Ben with the full moon in the sky just above it.
“I’ve seen better,” Niall commented. I turned my head and saw that he was smiling at me. I blushed again and smiled back at him. Our faces were fairly close and I think anyone who was looking could see the love and happiness clearly written on our faces. Slowly, we leaned towards each other until our lips were just barely touching. “I love you,” His warm breath hit my face and his lips brushed against mine as he spoke.
“I love you,” I whispered before pressing my lips to his. In that moment, I realized just how happy and complete I felt. Niall had talked about loving someone Limitlessly, Infinitely, and Forever, and I was positive that Niall was the one I’d share a love like that with.

“So that’s where the picture came from,” Malik whispered. I nodded. “How the hell did the press even get that picture!? You were in the air!” Darcy said sharply. I shrugged, “Never underestimate the paparazzi.”
“We didn’t know you had a drug issue,” Malik changed the subject. “That’s not exactly something you tell your kids,” I replied.
“Wait a second, Uncle Liam’s son…” Darcy trailed off. I nodded, “Liam was worried that after Danielle’s death, Ryker would get wrapped up in drugs. He had already gotten involved with the wrong crowd, and Liam didn’t want his son to do something that could hurt him.”
“So Uncle Li came to you…” Malik trailed off. I nodded again, “He asked if I could talk to him, maybe scare him into not doing drugs. I didn’t want to see Ryker getting hurt.”
“What exactly happened to Aunt Danielle?” Darcy asked. “Your father and I will tell you that story another time. I promise.” He and I looked at each other and shared a frown, thinking of the terrible car accident 5 years ago and the broken hearted 12 year old boy missed his mother so much.
“Okay,” Darcy and Malik agreed, letting me continue with the story.

“Ah, Elizabeth Hanover, fancy running into you here,” A voice from above me said. I looked up and met the eyes of Simon Cowell. “Hello Simon. Would you like to sit?” I asked kindly. He sat across from me at the small table in the coffee shop half way between my flat and Niall’s flat.
“So this is the first time being away from your boyfriend, how do you feel?” He asked. I looked up at the ceiling for a moment, “Well, he left 12 hours ago, I’m not sobbing, or an emotional wreck, I think I’m doing pretty good,” I nodded. Simon chuckled. “When do you leave for Italy?”
“Tomorrow, I start shooting Friday get back Sunday morning,” I replied. Simon nodded, “So have you given my offer any thoughts?”
“I have, and my answer still stands. As much as I would love to sing and make a career out of it, I’m not ready for that,” I answered honestly. “You know, I normally would just walk away, but you’re honest and good, and I haven’t heard a voice like yours in a while, so whenever you feel you’re ready, call me.” He slid his business card across the table to me and got up, walking out of the coffee shop. I didn’t even have time to process what just happened when another person sat in his place.
“Wow, it’s been a while since we’ve spoken, huh?” Catherine said. “Yeah, I’ve been swamped at work. Fall and winter are my busiest seasons. How have you been?”
“I have been great,” She seethed. “What about you and your boyfriend?” She threw a magazine at me and I looked up at her in surprise. “What the hell is your problem?” I demanded. She stood up and people began staring. “You never have time to hang out with me, you’re always with your boyfriend and his stupid little band! I’m your best friend dammit.”
“Really?” I shouted even louder than she had. “Lemme give you a little run down of the past 3 months. Niall and I have had 9 dates. Dates as in just the two of us. Then, me and the rest of the boys have hung out at least double that. I invite you every time we hang out, but you’re in Uni. So sorry for scheduling conflicts. God. I can handle it when Directioners yell at me, but I thought you’d be above that.” Before I turned away I reached into my bag. “Here, Liam wanted me to give these to you. 2 front row tickets and back stage passes to see their ‘stupid little band’ in Dublin.” I threw the tickets and passes on the table before walking out of the café.
I walked down the street and my phone rang. I pulled it out of my bag and, without looking, answered it. “Hello,” I sighed. “Hey, babe, what’s wrong?” Niall’s comforting and thickly accented song, rang in my ears. I felt a little bit of the pressure on my chest lighten. “I don’t think Catherine and I are talking anymore.”
“What happened!?”
“It was really just stupid. I don’t even get her. So did you guys just land in L.A?”
“Yeah, we’re on our way to the hotel. Are you going to work?” He asked. “Yup, just packing up my stuff, editing some pictures, last minute stuff before I head off to Milan. I am so excited!” I squealed.
“I am so proud of you! And excited, you just go be amazing okay?”
“I’ll do my best. Knock ‘em dead Sunday, okay? I love you!” I smiled even though he couldn’t see me. “I love you, Liz.” We hung up and I walked into my work building. I rode the elevator up to the floor third from the top. I said hi to my boss Mike and walked into my office with a nice view of the city. I sat at the Mac and opened photoshop right away.
After an hour of editing just one picture I groaned loudly and leaned back in my chair. “You okay, Elizabeth?” Mike asked.
“Do you know how hard it is to edit a Pinhole picture? Do you know the trouble I’ve been through? First, you have to get the model to stay absolutely still, then, you have to develop it the old fashioned way, and then it’s such a bitch to edit. Who even wants a picture taken like that? Oh—and you have to make a pinhole camera!”
Mike laughed at my frustration. “I’ll take care of editing the pictures, just pack up your equipment and head home.” I jumped up from my seat. “Seriously?” He nodded and shrugged. “IF YOU WEREN’T FLAMBOYANLTY GAY I’D KISS YOU!” I shouted as I ran to the large studio. I got my favorite camera. It was the most expensive one, so I packed it in a bag and put it in another bag. Joe, another photographer, helped me pack up my lights. He was coming with me, as my assistant to Milan. We but the stuff in his car and I told him I’d see him at the airport the next day.
“Hey Perrie,” I answered the phone as I walked into my house. “Hey, gorgeous. You wanna do something? Jade got sick, and insists on being home alone.”
“Yeah, sure, what did you have in mind?” I asked. “Movie and dinner? Keep it simple, I know you’re leaving tomorrow.”
“Alright, I’m in!”
“I’ll pick you up in 30 minutes!”
“See you then” I said and then hung up.
