The Party
After we got to trailer 42 Katie and Jolie touched up our makeup and hair. We got into our dresses. My lavender sundress looked glamorous but not as good as Kimberly’s short red dress. We were finally ready. It was already 4:34. Yikes! Kimberly and I left Katie and Jolie to get ready for the party as we walked down to our section of the beach. My family was already there. I hugged family and friends as they arrived. I went to the food table sampling a few of the foods. Niall was right, it was really good food. “Hey!” Kimberly said walking up to the table. She picked up a chocolate covered marshmallow and threw it at me. I laughed and caught it in my mouth. Three girls Jocelyn, Brittany and Kayden from my old school walked up. Jocelyn shoved Kimberly out of the way and took my arm. Kayden took my other arm and Brittany walked beside her. Jocelyn was wearing a short sparkly black dress, it was super cute but a little too much for a graduation party. Kayden was wearing a really pretty salmon pink dress. Brittany was wearing a cream colored dress with a brighter salmon shrug. “So,” Jocelyn purred. “I heard you invited a bunch of famous people.” I nodded, I had always liked Jocelyn, Kayden, and Brittany, not anymore. “Where are they then?” She continued pushing further. I shook her off and said” Why don’t you look around for them yourself Jocelyn?” taking Kimberly’s arm and walking away. Jocelyn scowled after us and we left smirking. Someone tapped my shoulder Brittany was standing there with a sympathetic look on her face. I raised my eyebrows. “Sorry about Jocelyn.” Brittany started. “I was hanging out with her because she usually isn’t like this. I guess everyone gets star struck. Is it okay if I hang out with you two tonight?” Before I could say anything Kimberly budded in “Of course!” I rolled my eyes leave it to Kimberly to be nice. I linked arms with Kimberly on one side and Brittany on the other. I grinned, I felt my goal of being truly popular coming into sight. As long as I kept ratting out the bad ones I should be good!
My ex-boyfriend Kevin walked up to me casually. “Hey, Maddi.” I melted. His warm brown eyes got me every time. I tried to remember why we even broke up in the first place. Oh, right, according to him we were too ‘different’ to be together but I think that’s just because he liked Destiny. We were still good friends and all, I could never like him the way I did before though. “Hey Kevin!” I replied cheerfully. Kimberly raised her eyebrows, fortunately he had no clue I run a partially famous vlog, I had posted at least 6 different vlog entries about how angry, sad, happy, confused, and disappointed I was that he broke up with me. Kimberly was the first to like, and comment on them and had grown a virtual hatred for him. Out of nowhere he hugged me. I hugged him back. It was a friendly and only friendly hug.
I breathed in his warm scent. He always had his cinnamon cologne on. I smiled, remembering the last time we were at Miami Beach. It was a week before the break up and he gave me a piggy back ride all the way into the water. I had so many pictures but deleted half of them out of anger. I bet Kevin still had them.
I broke away from the hug cutting it off just before it became more of a girlfriend-boyfriend hug. His eyes were sad as I took Brittany and Kimberly’s arms again and turned to leave. He grabbed my arm awkwardly since it was linked with Kimberly’s. “Maddi, I was maybe hoping we could get back together? I made a mistake of breaking up with you because I thought I liked someone else but really I still like you.” Uh oh, I was afraid of this happening. I really didn’t want to ruin this friendship but we’d already broken up 3 times and gotten back together. I was starting to feel angry. I would have been okay if this was a genuine first-mistake but no he’d done it repeatedly.
I unhooked my arms with Kimberly and Brittany, both of them looking shocked first, then glaring at Kevin. Both were aware of my situation and both knew my intentions. “Kevin, I said grabbing his wrist and dragging him to the dance floor. He looked excited for a moment until I told him to wait here as I went up to the DJ. I leaned down whispered to him. The DJ laughed and nodded. I ran down the steps and joined Kevin, putting my hand on his chest to tell him that, no I wasn’t going to dance with him.
“This is what I say to people like you Kevin. I really wish we could be friends but I have a feeling that it’s not going to work out like that.” I yelled over the din of people. The DJ tapped the microphone to get everyone’s attention. “Here is a special announcement from the graduation girl herself to a very special someone.” A fast beat came on and I walked over to Kimberly and Brittany, dragging them onto the dance floor. Taylor Swift’s voice came on singing “We are Never Getting Back Together” We were dancing as Kevin’s face turned bright red as he stormed off. I looked away. I couldn’t bear to do this to him but lately he’d been acting like a jerk. It was as if he thought he could dispose of me anytime he wanted and come back awhile later with me still loving him. It wasn’t going to happen. Not this time. Plus if something really was going on between me and Liam, then I didn’t want to hurt Kevin like he’d hurt me.
After the song was done I saw my mom speaking with Kevin at the side of the party. She seemed disappointed but she soon started grinning. Uh, oh, what now? She put her hands on his shoulders and guided him over to me. “Hey, honey!” She said through clenched teeth. Something was wrong. The smile plastered on her face was fake, and her hands were gripping Kevin’s shoulders so hard they turned white. Out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw Kevin wince.
“Hey mom! This party is the best ever!” I said slightly sarcastically to show her I noticed her odd behavior. I could see her head nod just a fraction of an inch. She was signaling me. But what? She was saying yes or telling me to say yes. When? To who? Uh, oh. I get it. Why did I have to say yes to Kevin? I nodded back, just a fraction of an inch to my mom, a serious look on my face. I was letting her know I understood, but that doesn’t mean I agree with her. I shook my head pretending to shake out of a daze but really signaling my mom. She frowned nodded and left us there. “Sorry guys I kinda dozed off there.” I said smiling. Kevin shuffled backward slightly, looking awkward. “Hey Kevin, yes. I was kidding before.” I said. His eyes lit up and I blushed. I didn’t want to do this but I’ll talk to my mom after the party.
“Kevin, we are going to mingle, my mom told me to be a good hostess and greet everyone before I can really start to hang out.” I said glad for the excuse to leave him. I took Brittany and Kimberly’s arms and fast-walked away. “What was that all about? You had a perfect decline too!” Brittany shouted at me. “Brittany, Kimberly, I only have two words to explain this.” I said “my mom.”
“Oh!” They said in unison. I walked around introducing myself in some cases and saying hello to friends and family that I didn’t really know. At 6 o clock, Katie and Jolie came. Katie joined Kimberly, Brittany and I walking around. I introduced her to Hayleigh and Miss California, Sarah. After chatting a bit with them I ran into the cheerleading squad.
I loved those guys. Even though I wouldn’t invite any of them over to a sleepover, I’ve been invited to a bunch of cheerleading sleepovers at their houses. Out of the whole school I know them the best. The squad has 15 girls but I only like 7 of them. Caroline, Samantha, Grayson, Callie, Autumn, Ivy, and Rachel.
Caroline was wearing a blue dress that looked really good on her, Samantha was wearing a tan high low that I know to be her favorite, Grayson wore a white over the shoulder dress with blue accents, and Callie (her best friend therefore they HAVE to match) wore a white over the shoulder dress with blue accents. Autumn wore a blue dress with gold accents that complimented her golden hair, so did Rachel and Ivy. Looking at each of them I realized they had all dressed with the same colors. Aqua, gold, and white. Hey, those are the school colors!
“You guys dressed like a squad!” I said. They all laughed and admitted that they’d planned it out. After exchanging a few words with them, Katie, Brittany, Kimberly and I broke off and headed towards the snack table and young man with blonde hair was crouched over the table filling his plate. When he turned I realized two things. He had two other plates that were filled to the max and it was Niall! “Hey you!” I said. He grinned.
I felt Brittany tense beside me. I saw out of the corner of my eye Brittany sigh. Her auburn hair looked like a penny in the fading sunlight. “Katie, Kim could you guys come help me with something. Brittany, keep an eye on Nialler for me would you?” Brittany nodded coming back to earth and did Niall grin even wider or was that just my imagination? As soon as we were out of sight, Katie gave me a knowing grin and so did Kim. “Did you guys see that? Brittany practically fell into his arms!” I said excitedly. “and even if she did I bet Niall would have caught her and held on tight!” Kimberly said. Katie nodded laughing.
“It just like you and Liam, Maddi!” Kim said. I blushed, was it really as obvious as Brittany and Niall? Uh oh, if it was, it was probably posted on youtube by now. And guess who might see it. Kevin. Yikes! “Earth to Maddi!” Katie said waving a hand in front of my face. I snapped back into focus just in time to hear Kimberly say “What happened? You look like you just saw a ghost. Wait no, you look like a ghost!” I smiled. Kimberly’s hilarity could always distract me. I shook my head; I didn’t want to tell them until later tonight. “Let’s get back to Brittany and Niall.” I said walking swiftly over to them and putting Kevin out of my head.
They had moved to the side of the table and my mom had joined them as well as Zayn. I smiled “Hey mom!” I said. “This is Zayn and Niall, from One Direction.” I said introducing the boys. She smiled and nodded extending her hand first to Zayn then Niall. “well then, I’ll leave you kids to yourselves then.” She said walking away.
“I’ll be right back, I just need to ask her something.’ I said hurrying away after my mom. Once I caught up to her I crossed my arms my lips pursed. “Why were you telling me to say yes to Kevin?” I demanded. My mom shook her head but said “I felt bad for the guy he seemed genuinely sorry and you weren’t being quite fair.” “FAIR?!?! I’m not being FAIR?!” I exploded.
I expected people to look at me like I was crazy but no one was paying attention to me. Katy Perry just arrived. Ugh, how many people came to my party to celebrate my graduation? My mom sighed. “Could you remind me of what happened please?” she said looking sympathetic. “So Kevin and I were dating and then he broke up with me because ‘we were too different’ but the next day asked Destiny out. Since he was acting like a 6th grader I got over him quickly but then he broke up with Destiny and asked me out again. That was the time I forgave him because he genuinely made a stupid mistake and promised that he would never do it again. But he did it again this time for Jocelyn but she declined him so he asked me out a third time. That was the time you said give him a chance because he was obviously confused. But when Addison came to town he broke up with me telling me that we were too ‘different’ again.
Tonight he asked me out again apologizing like he has every time but this time I said no in the awesomest way possible. I asked the DJ to play Taylor Swift’s ‘We are Never Getting Back Together’ and left him alone on the dance floor while I danced on the side with Kimberly and Brittany. But you had to come in and I told him it was a joke. Although I am hoping I can fall back that I said it sarcastically if he thinks we are still together.” I finished. My mom nodded lips pursed. After a minute of silence I left. When I returned Liam, Harry and Louis had come. “Hey guys! I just had to take care of something real quick.” I said explaining my absence.
“Oh, guys this is Katie and Brittany by the way.” I said introducing them. There were nods and hand-shakes. I shifted my body and shuffled slightly towards Liam. I could glimpse my mom reprimanding Kevin out of the corner of my eye. I smiled she’d take care of Kevin for me. Brittany grabbed my arm and so did Kim. They guided me towards the dance floor giggling. “What happened? Did I space out?” I asked.
“Yes! And you didn’t even hear what Harry said to me!” I narrowed my eyes. Was she joking? Looking at her genuine glow I guessed that she was telling the truth. “What?” I asked excited. “He asked me to dance with him later!” She said still glowing. “That is so awesome!” I said. Kimberly and Harry were a cute couple. We danced for a while and then talked to Katy Perry for a bit. It felt like a fantasy as the night rushed past me. Finally it was time for dinner. Kimberly, Katie, Brittany and I served ourselves. As we walked to our table, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around. “Alexia!” I gasped. “Jenna! Brianna!” All three of my friends stood there. They had been in every class with me since Kindergarten no joke. Since our last names were close to the same we had often been mistaken as family.
Alexia stood there wearing a short yellow dress, much like Kimberly’s, with red accents and her caramel colored hair was pulled back in a braid so long it went down to just below her ribs. Jenna was wearing a tan high-low dress with salmon accents, her dark brown hair standing out. Brianna was wearing a purple just-below-the-knee-length dress that complimented her golden curls perfectly. All three of my old friends looked beautiful standing there.
“Why don’t you join us?” I asked. “Would we fit?” Alexia asked. “Sure, my mom went a little overboard and my ‘assigned’ table will fit 20 people. It’s the big square one over there.” I said pointing to where Kimberly, Katie, Brittany, Zayn, Liam, Louis, Harry, Niall, Caroline, Samantha, Rachel, Ivy, Grayson, Callie, Autumn, Hayleigh, Alexia, Jenna, Brianna and I were supposed to sit. 20 people, exactly. Creepy. Hopefully no one else on I know wants to come sit with me. I sat down. Kimberly was to the right of me, Alexia to the left. On Alexia’s left there was Jenna then the corner. On Kimberly’s right there was Katie then the corner. All of the boys sat right across from us and to Jenna’s left (around the corner) there was Brianna, Samantha, Caroline, Grayson, and Callie. On Katie’s right there was Hayleigh, Autumn, Ivy, Rachel, and Brittany. We were all kind of sitting awkwardly until I broke the silence. “Hey everyone, thank you so much for coming, it means a lot to me.” I said smiling at Liam.
