Roomie
No bitch, we’ll just eat on the floor.
“Bee? Is that you? This is like fate or something, how are you?” I tore my gaze from my book and observed the library looking for the source of the voice until my gaze connected with the beautiful brown eyes I was so envious off.
“Hey Eleanor. I’m pretty good thanks, how about you?” I replied, pointing towards the spare seat opposite me which she swiftly sunk down into after throwing her bag and coat onto the table.
“I’m great! Whatcha doing here then?” She questioned. I closed by book and placed it onto the table, watching her wiping the rain from her forehead and onto her black jeans.
“Just doing some reading.” I pointed towards the closed book. That was half the reason, the other being the douche-dick in my room. I didn’t have class today and I still hadn’t decided whether I should accept his offer to help or not. It all just seemed fishy to me.
“What about you?” I questioned.
“Just came to get a book out for my psych class.” She pulled a chunky book from her bag reading; ‘The human mind’. Wow, exciting title much?
“Fair-play.” I nodded unsure of what to say next.
“So, do you wanna get some coffee with me or something? And maybe some lunch? Louis’s at training so I’ve been pretty much been abandoned, plus I think we should get to know each other.” She giggled.
“Oh and you do know that ‘fair-play’ is an Irish saying right? Niall would be impressed.” She nudged my arm as we walked out of the library, I just laughed.
The shop was just around the corner so we didn’t have to walk far so we talked about meaningless nothing; basically just getting to know each other.
We stepped into the coffee shop. It was practically empty which surprised me slightly, the interior is retro-styled but in a perfect way. I can definitely invasion myself having spending a lot of time in here. “So how long have you and Lou been dating?” I questioned as we walked over to the corner table.
“I think about-” She pondered the question slightly, probably conferring with herself “-18 months and a bit” she smiled; more to herself than me. I didn’t have to know Louis and Eleanor for more than a few days to realise that they were truly in love with one another, they have the type of passion that girls like me can only dream of having.
“Hello welcome to Veho.” The waitress greeted us. You would think we were at a high class establishment not just a small bakery.
“Would you like a table?” She questioned.
“Yes please” I nodded politely, biting my tongue to prevent the inevitable insults seeping out. That’s generally what happens; I tend to speak my mind. A very irritating trait I like to call stubbornness opposed to what my mother calls it; cold hearted.
How does speaking your mind make you cold hearted exactly?
The shop was surprisingly warm and cosy compared to the outdoors and I assume that’s why Eleanor took the coat she was wearing of her petite frame along with the black scarf and placed it onto the back of her chair.
I took the opportunity to glance out of the window and into the somber scene. Faint splattering sounds could be heard accompanied by the large booms as the lighting struck the sky soon followed by the deep rumbles and claps which instantly soothed my mood. Ever since I was a child, thunderstorms have been the lullaby of my life; there effect on me is un-explainable.
Let’s just say that if I had the choice, I would marry a thunderstorm over a guy any day. There fiery, dangerous and irresistible. I mean the thunderstorm, not guys.
“So what about you?” I tore my attention away from the thunder and towards the question.
“What about me?” I questioned confused as to if I had been zooning out for a while.
“Any special boy in your life, silly!” She slapped my arm slightly between giggles.
“No not really” I muttered. As much as El seems nice, and I can’t trust her with my past, not that it’s exactly worth knowing anyway.
“I’m shocked” I watched her gasp before giving our orders to the pretty blonde waitress.
“Why?” I creased my brows. If anything I would have thought she would figure someone like me would be single. Forever alone, and yes you should feel sorry for me.
“You just seem really humorous and like a really fun person to be around. I just figured some lucky guy would have nabbed you up by now”
I laughed “No, I don’t think so. Trust me when I say that I’m really not girlfriend material”
“Don’t be silly.” She twirled her hair around her finger “With my help, you’ll have a sweetheart in no time” She winked.
“What do you mea-” My question was cut-short by a tray being placed on the table followed by 2 plates and a drink.
“Here’s your orders girlies. Enjoy your food” She walked of behind the desk and continued to read her magazine.
A few minutes of comfortable silence past as we both respectably ate our lunch. I pondered over what El had previously meant about finding me someone. I wish the server hadn’t interrupted but at the same time, she wouldn’t have delivered the heavenly food that is my taco.
“So how’s Harry been so far? I mean, I know this is only your 4th day but you must have an idea of whether something’s going to happen?” She questioned, sliding the chair closer than I thought possible and leant across the table eagerly read to hear my answer. I hope by ‘happen’ she’s not suggesting we get together, because let’s be honest; the thought makes me sick to the stomach.
I pondered my answer and recalled yesterday which consisted of us ignoring each other practically all day. Basically we didn’t actually see each other. When I finally woke up he had left for his music class and when he came home for lunch I had gone to class so the only time we were actually in the same room was in the evening but he had gone out and when he returned I pretended to be asleep.
“He’s…different?” I shrugged unsure of how to put my feelings across. He confused me, I hadn’t done anything to him and he hadn’t to me yet we had barely even talked and don’t even get me started on the weird tension we have.
I watched as she opened her mouth to speak before closing it again, taking a deep breath and releasing it slowly. “You don’t like him very much do you?” Her voice sounded more defeated than before had and I almost felt sorry for what I said.
“I...I-well. It’s not that I don’t like him. It’s just that I don’t know him and he hasn’t given me any reason to warm to him” I chose my wording carefully but I wanted to tell her the truth.
I don’t hate him, I just don’t like him.
She giggled slightly, her bouncing waves falling into her eyes. “Typical Harry, he’s not all that bad you know. He can come across charming and cocky but underneath he’s actually awesome to be around.” She took a bite from her sandwich, nodding at me “Take my word for it.” She added with a mouth full of bread and cheese.
“He was just really charming and all up in my face. He even walked in on me when I was in the bathroom.” And that she erupted in laughter. I watched her intently as she threw her head back heartily, soon followed by a stray tear leaking down her flawless skin which she quickly whipped away with her sleeve.
“Is something funny?” I chimed in attempting to keep my face straight but failing miserably and finally I let light shine on the embarrassing moment and I released a giggle which was accompanied by the inevitable snort.
Okay, him walking in was kinda funny.
“That’s Harry for you. But I doubt he would have come in unless he was positive you were dressed. He’s forthcoming but he isn’t that bad” She affirmed, now that her breathing was slowly returning to normal.
“Does he have a girlfriend?” I furrowed my eyebrows slightly. Who knows, maybe he secretly has a girlfriend and he’s just trying to make my life hell by hitting on me? Or maybe he’s flirting with me as a joke or for a dare?
All very plausible possibilities.
“No, he is a real charmer but he doesn’t really do girlfriends I don’t think. Well I’m not sure; he hasn’t dated since last year….” She admitted but judging by how her eyes where now finding her coffee cup so interesting she was probably, understandably, holding back information, after all I barely know her and its Harry’s business anyway.
“More of a hump and dump kinda guy?” I muttered, finishing up my food as I waited for her to reply.
“I’m not really sure, but I don’t think Harry is that kinda guy. I’ve known him for years and he’s treats women good” She winked as we gathered our belongings from the table and paid for lunch before stepping out into the bitter cold outdoors. It had stopped raining now and the sun was slowly conquering the rain but it was still noticeably winter.
“So, there’s a charity football match later tonight, you should totally come. Louis and Zayn are in the team so were gonna go for support. It would be fun.” She smiled at me. How can I say no to thatsmile?
“I well, I’m not sure….” I trailed off remembering that I would be stood around looking like a headless chicken whilst they all paired off. I would be like the 5th wheel; just I would be the 8th wheel?
“It might give you and Harry a chance to properly get to know each other.” She pointed out as we approached the dorms.
“I barely even know you guys though.” I whispered more to myself than anyone else, but it didn’t stop her picking up on it.
“Yet another reason to come along. You’re really nice and it would be cool if we were friends and got to know each other.” I stepped into the elevator and pondered over my reply.
It would be good for me to get out, then again I would have to face Harry and that would be awkward. Especially since I’m not sure if were on a normal talking level or if he’s just going to be the first-class dick he has been the past few days.
“Yeah, why not.” I broke the silence with my newfound confidence about the idea.
“Yay! Niall will be so happy; he doesn’t have anyone to go with. Basically all the partners are going and Cindy insinuated she would kill Harry if he didn’t take her. She has quite a way with words you know.” She rambled on but only one thing stood out to me;
Niall
“Oh urm but it won’t be a date or anything right?” I spoke hesitantly referring to me being Niall’s ‘partner’ for the night.
“No silly.” She slapped my arm in a playful manner “I just meant you too can hang out together and talk, otherwise he will be a little loner.” she studied my reaction carefully.
“Unless you like Niall.” She wiggled her eyebrows, a smirk tugging the corners of her lips.
“No. No. No, I mean I urm he’s nice and all but I only just met him” I stumbled over my own words. And now she’s going to think I’m getting nervous because I have a crush on him, which for the record, I don’t.
“Right….” She trailed of; I could sense the hidden uncertainty in her voice. “Oh we should exchange numbers as well, just in case either of us get lost.” She pulled out her phone and I mimicked her actions of entering our numbers before returning them back to their respective owners, I noticed her stifle a laugh at my phone case.
Everyone loves my phone case. What can I say; I just have phenomenal fashion sense.
She pulled me into a tight hug. “Well see you tonight. Foot-ball pitch, don’t be late. I’ll text you later.” Her words muffled into my hair but I understood.
“Sure thing, bye.” I replied, waving her off and walking down the hall towards my dorm.
I threw the door to ‘our’ room open instantly noticed it was lacking a fruit crazed maniac. Thank goodness; some alone time at last.
My silence didn’t last for long as I peered down at the object in my hand blasting demi lovato’s - heart attack. Sighing I answered the call unsure of who it might be.
“Oh, hello mum”
“Pfft what, no, of course I’m happy to talk to you.”
“Don’t get sassy with me.” I wedged the phone between my ear and shoulder whilst I tugged of my wet top.
“We’ve already had ‘the talk’. No I haven’t slept with anyone.” I emphasised the ‘talk’.
“I’m sorry but why exactly do you need a glow stick?”
“Oh okay. . . I think they’re in the bathroom cupboard?”
“Right . . . well, be careful. Bye mum.”
“No I promise. Yes of course. Bye”
I hung up sighing. Sometimes I swear my mum is the weirdest women in the world, maybe that’s why I turned out just as weird as I am? Yes, that’s probably why.
Just before I put the phone down on my bed I received a text. I groaned in annoyance at the technology before smiling like a stupid idiot to myself as I read it.
