To: Prince Charming

Chap. 6

Alex POV

I spent the next half hour of lunch texting good ol Prince Charming. With him being Harry Styles and all, I was pretty surprised that we had so much in common. He loved school but hated the whole popularity/ hierarchy thing. We love chocolate, twix especially. He said he like cats, which I liked but I argued with the cuteness of a puppy. Honestly, the two of us were so easily. As the warning bell rang, I could feel my phone rumble against the metal shelf of my locker.

Charming: Who are you?

I touched reply and began to type away on the smooth touch screen.

Me: I’m not telling. :P

Charming: You know who I am!!!! >:

Me: u ask the quest. I’ll answer 

Charming: Ok um… R u a girl?

Me: Last time I checked. :P

Charming: Ok, thank god!

Me: LOLz broski. I have to go class. TXT you l8er. xx

I placed the phone in the little pocket in my bag and headed off to my class with some rather thick and heavy textbooks that I had wrapped around my arms. Honestly, these books were made for the torture of young children. Someone could tear a muscle trying to lift these. I walked around the corner by a glass art bureau. It held some of my drawings and I took a quick peek at them before I walked past them into the maths hallway. I walked into Mr. Green’s Calculus when I almost dropped my books on the floor. There, sitting right in the center of the room was none other than the Harry Styles. I felt my heart do double flips. I tried to look around the room, but found only the seat beside Harry as the only one.

I kept my head down as I walked to him and sat next to him. He gave a meager smile and looked back down at his desk. Promptly, the pale rather lanky teacher walked in. He began to scribble some nonsense on the board and suddenly everybody was rustling through their bags to pull out their notebooks and pencils. I pulled a notebook out of my backpack and placed it neatly on the seat.

In my head, I had the urge to go up to Harry and scream to him that I was Cinderella, but I couldn’t. The one thing that passed through my head was what if he didn’t want me? I looked up at the board with my 20/20 vision eyes and copied down some of the problems. There were about 10 problems on the board and after studying them for a moment, I could tell these problems would take the entire class. I opened my new notebook to a brand new page and began to scribble the problems down.

I had finished with almost ten minutes to spare. I looked over at Harry’s papers to see where he was when I noticed that he had barely finished the first problem. He had his face scrunched up in concentration and I could almost see beads of sweat developing on his forehead. I even noticed that he had his solution all wrong. I wanted to help him, but Mr. Green just ended up sending me evil glares for attempting to talk.

For the rest of the class, I ended up just doodling in my notebook. When the warning bell rang, I began to pack up my things.

“Alright Class, I would you to leave the problems you did in my class on my desk. They will be used as diagnostic tool and will be first grade.”

I ripped the marked up pages out of my notebook and scribbled my name on the top. I dropped the pages on her desk after stapling them together. I glanced at Harry Styled placing his wrong one problem on his desk after mine. I saw his upset face walk out of the room. I left behind him and pulled out my phone.

Me: Hey, how was class?

Charming: Day 1 and I’m failing

Me: it’ll get bettr. Don’t wrry.

Charming: ya ya

Mary: Dinner: Indian Food. Be ready by 7:00 otherwise, you’re getting that fancy phone away.

Me: Right on it.

I locked my phone and walked to my next class. The class was the last of the day and quite frankly, I was ready to conduct the tryouts and go home. I guess I’d pick up take out on the way home.

The class went by quick. It was English, so we wrote a little essay about out summers. I walked out of the class and immediately to the locker room. I slipped on my black speedo and some shorts and flip flops and walked out into the pool area. Only two people were waiting at this point ready in their swim suits ready to go. Slowly, over the next ten minutes, I could see people filter out of the locker rooms and onto the pool deck and sit on the bleachers.

“Welcome,” I yelled as the murmuring began to abate, “I’m Alex, you’re captain. I will be running the try out today. Thank you for coming. Please remember that if you were on the team last year, it does not promise you a spot this year. And to all those who are trying out for the first time, I wish you the best of luck,” I spoke as I heard the pool echo my voice through the room.

“Now if you could please line up on the block in order to begin. I expect only a 200 freestyle. This is just a warmup, I’m not judging you swimming right now.”

I watched the horde of about 50 swimmer wannabes line up across the block for their 225. Joe and Katie waved to me as they lined up behind a couple of freshman. Shay, Alexis, and Kaylie gave me evil looks as they walked with poise to the front of the blocks. Kaylie jumped in with skill, while Shay and Alexis belly flopped into the pool. As I stood the pool deck, I could see Harry and Liam walk in with swimsuits on. They walked up to with white towel slung over their broad shoulders.

“Er, where’s the swim team tryout?” I could feel myself zone-out as I stare at Harry’s six-pack abs.

“Right, um. Here. You’re late,” I said as I flipped on to swim captain mode, “Line up at the block and do a 225 freestyle. Get ready quickly. I’ll explain things to you later.”

They walked to the bleachers and pulled on their googles and stood behind some giggling sophmores. I rolled my eyes.

“Girls, PAY ATTENTION! YOUR UP NEXT!,” I yelled as I ended up frustrated. They snapped back into swimmer mode and climbed onto the block and dove in to the pool.

“Good work Alex,” my coach said as she walked up behind me wearing a white sweat suit. “I knew I picked the right girl for captain.”

“Thanks,” I replied as I concentrated back to the swimmers in the crowded lanes.

I carefully watched Harry and Liam dive in. They had flawless dives, technique, and flip-turns. I was almost angry and jealous. But I suddenly realized that I could replace Shay and Alexis from the team, but that would result in heavy punishment. FLIPIN FLUTTERDOODLE!

For the rest of the tryout, I watched some of the swimmers and crossed out the horrible one. I moved the good ones together and the bad ones away. Alexis and Shay were with the bad ones but had to make the team anyway. By the end of the tryout, I had my team ready and I let everyone go. I okayed the list with the coach and posted a copy in the girl’s locker room. I texted Joe to put up one in the boy’s locker room. I felt happy with my decision, except for Shay and Alexis but they ended up fighting anyway and getting kicked out of practice.

I waked into the locker room and grabbed my swim bag and my school things. I picked out some change for the underground and walked out of school when I felt a buzz in my sweater packet.

Charming: So…. Guess what just happened to me?
