Live While We're Young

Marina's POV

All I remembered was falling to the floor, everything after that was blurry. Louis and Harry briskly walked through the door.

"I'm so sorry! Louis and me forgot about switching the water with the vodka!" Harry yelped. "I swear!"

From there I burst into rapid French. "Harry et Louis! Comment pouvez-vous être si négligent?! Heureusement, ce n'était pas quelqu'un qui avait une allergie grave à l'alcool, mais peu importe!" The two boys stared at me blankly.

"What?" Harry asked weakly.

"I forgive you."

"Okay." Louis said in a small voice. "Harry, can you leave?"

Harry nodded. Did I miss something? I raised an eyebrow at Harry, who shrugged his shoulders. Once Harry had left Louis took a deep breath. "Who are your parents?"

"My what?"

"Your parents." Louis clarified.

"My mum was killed in a car crash and her dad is in a memory care unit at a senior living home." I told him calmly.

"No- your real parents."

I stared at Louis completely confused. "How did you know I was adopted?"

"Well," Louis shuffled his feet nervously. "I saw your birth certificate and it read, 'Marina Bonnie Poulston.'"

"So?"

Louis stood there, staring at the ceiling before saying, "that was my mum's last name."

"WHAT?!" I screamed, jumping out of the hospital bed. "But we're so-"

"Different?" Louis smirked at me. "Yeah, I noticed. Don't worry that'll change soon enough." He gave me a sloppy kiss on the check.

"Eww!" I wiped it off.

Louis looked appalled. "Oh! If that's how your going to be I might need to do that more often!" He said, jabbing me in the ribs and I let out a weak laugh.

The door opened and the nurse assigned to me walked in cautiously. "Um...is this a bad time?" She asked kindly with a small smile.

"No, it's fine." Louis told her.

"Ms. Poulston?" I nodded.

"Have you had any recent growth spurts? Any soreness in your bones?"

I bit my lip. "Come to think of it I have. About two months ago actually after I grew an inch."

"That confirms it." She said bitterly.

"Confirms what?" Louis snapped and I glared at him.

"Well," she shuffled her papers nervously. "While you were sleeping we took a x-ray to make sure it wasn't anything other than the allergy."

"And?" Louis asked bluntly.

The nurse took a deep breath. "It was only an allergy, but we came across what we thought was a bone cancer in your left leg." I gasped. "We performed a biopsy and the results came back as-"

"Negative?" Louis interrupted.

The nurse shook her head. "I've very sorry Ms. Poulston, but they came back positive. You've been diagnosed with metastatic Ewing Sarcoma."

I gasped. "Y-you mean it's traveled to my lung?"

The nurse gave me a sympathetic look, her eyes full of sorrow.

"I have cancer." I whispered to Louis, frightened by the thought of it.

"There is a possible cure for it though. It would require chemotherapy, surgery, and possibly radiation." The nurse informed us.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, I thought. "I'll do it."

The nurse smiled. "That's good to hear. We'll schedule our first session of chemo in a week?"

I nodded to the nurse, then turned to Louis. "You do undertstand that's not a guarantee."

"Then I guess there's only one thing left to do." Louis said sweetly.

I grabbed his tee shirt pulling him forward. "And what's that?"

"Live while we're young." Louis said simply and I couldn't help but smile.
