Behind The Masks

I was walking to school with Jake. Three days after we slept together, nothing's been awkward. It's like it never happened. Jake hasn't made a move on me, and I'm thankful for that.

We finally arrived at the entrance gate at Lavender-Rose. Jake stopped me, and walked in front of me.

"So I'll see you at gym, lunch, and math," he announced, leaving a kiss on my cheek. I walked in and made a beeline for Harry's class.

As I was walking, a girl caught up to me, and started walking with me. I turned to her. She looked at me, and smiled.

"Hey!" she said.

"Hi," I said awkwardly.

"Sorry! I'm Nicaela. Nicaela Stewart, but people call me Nic."

"Hey Nic! I'm Willow. Willow Caverly," I said, shaking her hand. Her smile dropped on her face, but she quickly recovered. We kept walking, an awkward silence floating around us. I guess she finally figured out where we're going.

"If you're going to Mr. Styles' class, he's not there. I heard he was in the hospital," she told me. Panic filled my system. I turned to her

"Where'd ya hear that?" I asked frantically. She was calm, but her eyes were nervous. Scared, even. It almost seemed as if she was thinking about it.

"I dunno. It's a rumor floating around. Styles' brother or somethin', Louis? He came to the office and said Styles had fallen and it was pretty bad. I guess some kids heard." I almost started crying.

"Oh my God." I said, my voice cracking.

"Hey! Why are you crying? He's the meanest teacher around here! Although he didn't used to be." I looked at her.

"Whaddo you mean?" I asked. She smiled once more.

"Four years ago, when I was a freshman, he had a girlfriend. He was the best teacher! No homework, let out to lunch early! But then, she broke up with him to be with a student. A senior then. I dunno. He's been weird ever since." I looked at her.

"Um, wow." She just looked at me. I started to walk away from Harry's class. Now what?

"Ummmm if you want, you can hang out with me and my friends."

"My friends and I," I automatically corrected. She looked at me, a teasing smile playing on her face.

"Ummm sure, why not?" I said, smiling widely. We walked over to a row of stairs where many people were sitting, including Jake. I smiled and waved at him. He looked at me and waved back.

"Are you guys a thing?" Nic asked me.

"Huh?" I say as I turn to face her.

"You and blondie over there. Are you two... Together?"

"Uhh, nah. It's... Errr... Not exactly like that," I stuttered, the question stirring up questions of my own. She smiled at me.

"Are you -ahem- FWB?" she asked smirking. I looked at her, tilting my head slightly to show my confusion. The fuck is that? She looked at me, kind of annoyed, but her interest not fading.

"Friends with benefits?"

"Sorry?"

"Damn girl! Where have you lived?" Nicaela yelled. Then she quieted down.

"Ahem. Sorry. Friends with benefits is when you guys have no real relationship, except a physical one. You fuck, but you don't date." I looked at her, kinda repulsed. People do that shit? What the hell? But... Isn't that what I'm in right now? But we've only fucked once...

"Sorry Nic. I have no idea. You'll have to ask Jacob for yourself." She looked a bit sad. Why was she so interested? Whatever. As we walked over, I saw a girl. She was pretty tall. About 5'9"? She had ginger hair with blond dip dye that flowed past her bare shoulders. She had brown eyes, and was wearing a shoulder less shirt and had stylishly ripped shorts that had been faintly tie dyed. A dog tag and sneakers completed her look.

"Annie!" Nic yelled. Annie turned around and I smiled. She looked nice. She looked over at me. Her smile stayed, but curiosity filled her dark brown eyes.

As we sat next to her, she looked at me, her eyes asking me a question. 'Who are you?' It wasn't rude, or mean, just curious. I decided to answer her unspoken question.

"S'appenin? I'm Willow," I said, putting my hand out. She smiled widely.

"Caverly?" she asked, taking my hand. I nodded. Annie and Nicaela passed knowing glances, and a few giggles left their mouths.

"Am I missing out on an inside joke here?" I asked. Are they laughing at me? Annie looked over at me.

"Not exactly. We can't tell you, but I'm sure you're smart enough to figure it out." What the hell? Just as I was about to ask what she meant, two guys went up to us. One was as tall as Annie, maybe a bit taller. He had really pretty eyes. He faced me.

"Hi. I'm Liam. Liam Payne."
