Little Steps

Bonding Gone Wrong

Niall’s P.O.V.

I entered my room again, closing the door behind me with my foot, as my hands were full with plates of breakfast. I heard the shower running, meaning Ari was occupying it. I sat the plates down on the small wooden table and collapsed onto bed, letting out a large sigh. Aria made it really apparent that she had something for Liam, not me.

Not me.

I was utterly mad at myself. Why couldn’t I have been a little more attractive? What did Liam have that I didn’t? Well, he was serious, I wasn’t. He was responsible, I wasn’t. He was good-looking. I wasn’t.

Screw life.

The shower stopped and the bathroom door opened. Aria came out, a towel wrapped around her bare body. She was humming a familiar tune, one I couldn’t quite make out. Aria looked up, yelping as soon as our eyes met.

“I…I thought you were…” she stammered, tightening the towel around her body, I instantly blushed, looking down.

“Sorry.” I mumbled, feeling for a magazine of the bedside table and opening it, using it as a shield for my eyes.

“”I just didn’t know you were in here.” She chuckled nervously. “Super ninja skills, you have there.”

A few seconds later, I heard the bathroom door closing once more. I chuckled softly and took down the magazine, sighing happily to myself.

Aria is so beautiful. I loved the way when her hair was soaking, it shimmered and bolded her face like an angel. Her long eyelashes brought out her striking blue eyes that seemed like they went on forever. Her small feet were perfect for her, perfect for her perfect self. I loved how her cheeks turned a delightful rosy pink color, making her eyes sparkle. Everything about her made me want her more and more. Every time I saw her, she grew more and more beautiful.

She was my princess, but I was not her prince.

I felt bored, sitting here, thinking about my unfortunate life, when I panned the room glancing at my guitar leaned up against the wall. I smiled, I got up, taking the guitar into my hand before sitting at the edge of the bed. I placed my fingers on the metal strings and began to play.

Aria’s P.O.V.

I quickly braided my wet hair before looking into the bathroom mirror one more time. Though I had quickly grabbed something from my suitcase because of Niall being there, I had chosen decently. I was now wearing a teal V-neck and my favorite jeans shorts. What can I say, Australia had some steamy weather.

Just as I put my hand on the doorknob to exit the bathroom, I heard a guitar playing. The sound of the soft beautiful music calmed me, and I wondered where it was coming from. I quietly opened the door and stepped outside the bathroom. Niall was sitting on the bed, strumming beautifully on the guitar. His eyes were closed, like he was lost in his own world. I couldn’t recognize the song he was playing, yet it was still so pretty. I casually leaned against the wall, watching this beautiful boy create amazing music. He started humming the melody for the harmony, yet I still couldn’t figure out what song it was. His left foot was tapping along with the beat of the guitar being strummed, his head swaying slightly. This was like, one of those perfect movie scenes. Maybe if I dimmed the light a bit…

Another thing was how passionate he looked when played guitar. I found it especially attractive when guys knew how to play guitar. It was such a simple yet interesting instrument that looked good in Niall’s hands. It was then that he stopped playing and looked at me. I averted my eyes to the beige carpet, feeling the heat rising in my cheeks.

“Liked it?” Niall asked. I bit my lip and looked up, nodding quickly.

“I’ve always wanted to learn how to play.” I answered shyly. He smiled and walked over to me, grabbing my hand and pulling me back to the bed with him. He sat down and patted the spot next to him. I hesitantly sat down, Niall placing the guitar in my hands.

“Just relax and hold it the way it’s most comfortable.” He instructed, moving my fingers onto my strings. I blushed and put the guitar on my lap, resting it against my stomach.

“Okay, now hold this one down.” Niall pointed to one of the strings, putting his hand on top of mine and gently pressing my finger to one string. Then he reached behind and around my back and directed my right hand, placing my fingers in different places.

“Doesn’t this hurt your hands?” I asked, looking up at him. Niall laughed, lifting his hands from mine.

“You get used, to it I guess.” He shrugged, putting his hands back on mine, directing my fingers again. “Now, you have to strum the string that your holding down or else you’ll get the wrong tune. Try it.”

So Niall let go and left me to strum a few notes. He taught he how to do a C scale which was the easiest, and then a just gave up.

“My fingers are dying.” I groaned, handing the guitar to Niall.

“Lemme help.” Niall grinned cheekily and took my fingers, rubbing them gently. Little sparks jumped when our skin met, making me want to fall onto the bed and smile all day. Bummer he didn’t feel the same way I did for him.

My stomach decided to embarrass me and let out a large grumble. I felt my face flush, as it did a lot these days.

Niall just smiled. “You haven’t eaten breakfast, love.” He stood up and grabbed the plate of breakfast that was still sitting on the table. I took it thankfully and devoured all the food in five minutes.

“Much better.” I said after eating, patting my stomach approvingly. Niall grinned and took my plate, tossing it in the bin.

“So, what do you want to do today?” Niall asked, sitting down on the bed once more. I blushed, looking into his blue eyes. We both lied our heads down on our pillows, staring up at the ceiling.

“Actually, I think I just want to get to know you better.” I replied softly, fidgeting with my fingers.

“Alright, I’ll go first.” Niall offered.

I loved how it was so easy to talk to him. His life seemed so interesting and well, perfect compared to mine. He told me about his life before One Direction, along with his family and old friends. I know, I was supposed to be listening to what he was saying, but half the time I was admiring his features, how the sun reflected off his eyes, turning them aqua blue. His cute smile, his amazing laugh, his incredible sense of humor was everything that I loved. Everything about him was the exact reason why I liked him. We talked and laughed about funny memories, occasionally I shed few tears.

“So, have you had a boyfriend before?” Niall questioned, this question making me especially tensed.

“A few.” I answered stiffly. Niall sensed how uncomfortable I was by the question and slipped his arm around my shoulder, bringing me closer to him.

“Sorry, you don’t have to-“

“No. I…I’ve dated a few guys. I never really liked them. At all. They were all the kind of bastards, the ones who got you to kiss them and then shoved their tongue down your throat, then dumped you a week after. I haven’t dated anyone since ninth grade.”

Niall thought for a moment, rubbing my shoulder gently. “That’s because they never knew how to respect a special girl like you. You deserve much better treatment than what any of those guys could have ever given you. You are honestly one of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen and if a guy only likes you because you’re beautiful then there won’t be any importance in the relationship. However, if a guy can see how loyal, spunky, kind, friendly, and downright spectacular you are, then that’s a different story. Because I’m sure that guy would treat you like a princess. I’m very sure.”

I bit my lip, blushing from what Niall told me. “Um, thanks.”

“No problem, love.”

We stared at each other in silence. I loved the deep and yet bright blue that lingered in his eyes that made my heart skip a beat. I didn’t realize until two seconds after, that we were both leaning in slowly. Our lips were only a centimeter away from each other when I let my stupidity get to me, quickly jerking back.

“Y-yeah, those guys n-never really cared.” I mumbled, rubbing my neck nervously.

“They…don’t deserve you.” He cleared his throat, frowning terribly. Niall blinked a couple of times. That hopeful glint in his eyes had disappeared. As soon as I had pulled away, his face just…dropped. Everything dropped. His smile, his eyes, his heart. I felt like I had just taken a stuffed animal from a five-year-old.

Could pulling back do so much damage?

Niall’s P.O.V.

I knew it. I knew she didn’t like me. She just thought of me as a friend. Of course she would. Doesn’t every girl.

“Let’s just be friends, Niall.”- Hannah.

“You’re a great friend.”- Amy Green.

“I’d never date Niall.”- Demi Lovato.

Of course.

Ari left shortly after the almost kiss, mumbling something about going to check on Liam. When she glanced at me one last time, there were tears in her eyes. What had I done to make her cry? For all I know, I should’ve been the one crying.

And I had the feeling she wasn’t going to Liam’s room.
