Espy
Chapter 8
Perrie's POV:
"Ni..."
"What."
He just sat there, looking broken. Zayn put his arm around my shoulder. We were driving home from the adoption center in the limo.
"At least you get to fill out the forms to maybe adopt Espy," I said, in a feeble attempt to cheer him up.
He looked away, facing his head towards the window. I saw his eyes beginning to water.
"Ni..." Zayn said. "I thi-"
"This is so stupid!" Niall said, and he finally broke, letting his face fall into his hands as he began to cry. "She just appeared, a reminder of everything i gave up to get where I am. And I thought maybe, now that I know nothing could ruin my career, I could do this. I could adopt my daughter and call Essy and then we could be the family we knew we wanted to be since second grade. And now she's missing? And the stupid desk lady thinks she's dead? No one's heard from her in five years. She was the one Zayn, and now she's dead? It's all my fault."
"Niall," I said sternly. "It's not your fault-"
"Yes it is," he hissed. "I should've helped her take care of the baby I shouldn't have gone to X Factor without at least knowing she and my own daughter were going to be okay while I was gone. And look at them now! One's getting beat up everyday after school and screamed at for existing by someone whose supposed to be a parental unit, and the other one's dead?"
He sobbed. "Dead."
"You don't know that," I said, feeling my heart breaking. If I didn't have Zayn I don't know what I would have done. And this girl, I knew no one could compare to her for Niall.
He sat up shaking his head, tears running down his face. "If I just hadn't been so immature-"
"Niall!" I said sharply. "You were fifteen. Honestly who is mature when they are fifteen?"
"I've got to find her," he whispered. "I've got to at least know if she's dead or not."
"Niall," Zayn said bluntly. "You are being ridiculous. She's been missing for five years. Your not going to find her. If she was alive, shed've turned up by now. What you need to do is adopt your daughter and get her out of that hell hole of a foster home."
Nial gave Zayn an unnaturally cold look. "I don't want her."
"Why the hell not?" Yelled Zayn. "If I found out I had a daughter I'd abandoned I'd take her home and spend an awful lot of time telling her how sorry I was for being a dick."
Niall looked like Zayn had just slapped him across the face.
The car arrived at Zayn's house. Niall got out without a word. Zayn followed him, slamming the car door behind us.
"I need to go somewhere," I said abruptly.
"Want me to come?" Zayn asked, clearly still steaming.
"No, no," I said breezily. "Be back in a few."
I got in my car and backed out the the driveway, heading back to the adoption center. That little girl was getting adopted today.
