Espy
Chapter 25
Louis POV:
Harry, Espy and I had taken a trip to the park down the street for the evening. Me and Harry both had sunglasses on and hoods up to avoid fans if any were to notice us, but we hadn't really put heart into our disguises because no one knew we lived around here.
Harry had gone off down the street to the usual bagel shop to get dinner for all of us.
The sun had set, and the stars were beginning to sprinkle the sky. Espy was walking around, picking flowers from her favorite bushes and weaving them like she always did when we stopped here.
At first when Niall had asked us to watch Espy, it had been weird. Harry, being the overly friendly guy he is, had insisted we have every meal together like a family. For the first few weeks every meal had passed in awkward silence, broken only by Harry's feeble attempts at friendly conversation.
Liam stopped by for dinner some nights, but he always seemed tired and harassed. He'd suffered through his break up with Danielle, and the media was attempting to contact him every possible second, trying to find out what had happened to the world famous boy band, why it had basically vanished overnight.
Liam kept repeating in every interview that the band was not breaking up, but taking a break. After almost two months of this, the press were starting to get angry, especially since we'd postponed our latest tour.
But aside form Liam, after a few weeks, I really liked having Espy around. She was an inexplainable comfort to me. Harry wasn't around as often, as he wasn't one to stay in a house babysitting for two straight months, so I was left to fix everything with Espy's school and get her an in house tutor. She didn't mind. She hated school.
I looked up as she walked over, placing her newest flower headdress on my head. Then she sat down on my lap and leaned back into me. I was sitting up on my elbows looking up into the stars.
"You're still sad, Uncle Louis," she said, looking up into the stars with me. I sat up, crossing my legs underneath me and wrapping my arms around her midriff to keep her form getting too cold.
She crossed her ankles in front of her and closed her eyes.
"No," I said tonelessly. "I'm fine."
"She'll come back again," Espy said, opening her eyes. "It's written in the stars. You can see it."
I sighed. This girl really was crazy. She drove her tutor nuts. She never studied, never tried to learn, but when her tutor would get mad at her for lack of effort, and give her a really had question, she would always know the answer. Right away. Even with math.
"You can see the girl," she whispered, drawing in the air with her delicate little pointer finger. "And there's another girl. I don't know who she is. And there's a man. And the girls are sad, because they're all alone. And then there's the girl again, and there's you."
I stared up at the sky. What even. The stars just looked like stars.
I sighed and checked the time on my phone, my eyes stinging a little at the background.
"That's her?" Espy said, looking at the picture. "She's really pretty."
"So are you," I said, smiling down at her, and she giggled.
"You aren't going to try to do my hair again are you, Uncle Louis?"
I laughed at the memory.
"No."
I looked up to see Harry walking towards us with a bag of bagels. Espy took one and finished it quickly. She started to look a little tired.
"I'm gonna get the car," Harry said hastily.
I helped Espy up, and we began to follow Harry when a man walked over.
"You," he snarled. "Give me the girl. Now."
I stared. He was much taller than me.
"No."
Without warning he lunged at me, his fist making contact with the side of my face. I fell backwards and he began to beat me.
Espy screamed, clearly remembering the times she'd been beaten. My whole body was screaming with agony, my vision blurring.
Then, all of a sudden, the man stopped hitting me, and rolled off me with a low grunt of pain.
Eyes watering, I looked up. Espy stood there, a knife in her hand, covered in the man's blood. She didn't look like herself. For a moment, she had a crazed gleam in her eye I'd never seen before. Like she'd enjoyed what she'd done. Like she wanted to kill.
I began to shake slightly. Why had the man wanted to take her.
She dropped the knife suddenly as though it had burned her, and looked over at me. I got up slowly, aching and bleeding. She walked over and took my hand, leading me towards the car.
"Don't tell Harry," she whispered.
