Chapter 23
Eleanor's POV:
About an hour had passed since we'd arrived at the school, and we hadn't moved. Essy had refused to explain anything to me, other than the fact she and Niall went to this school when they were kids. I still thought she was crazy.
She sat about two feet away from me, staring at the ground as though it was about to open un and swallow her. Her face was contorted with fear
"Essy," I said cautiously, and she jumped. It took her a while to focus on me, and she seemed rather dazed and confused.
"Um," I said, clearing my throat. "Since you... uh... know this school so well, do you know a place where we could unpack and sleep for the night... you know where... uh... unwanted people wouldn't find us?"
She stared at me, without blinking. I cringed away slightly. She was starting to scare me. Many long awkward minutes passed, with her simply sitting and staring, as though she'd never seen another person in her life quite like me. And all I'd asked her to do was to go find us a bush.
I sighed and looked away, giving up. I'd have to go find somewhere myself.
Then without warning, she got up and walked away.
"HEY!" I shouted, then clamped my hand over my mouth. I didn't want to get caught, in case we were being followed. Not that we were. The only man who knew we'd escaped had long since crossed over Death's doorstep.
I grabbed the sack of food and the can of peaches I'd just been eating, and went running after her, the peach juice splashing all over my hand.
Disgusted, I slowed to wipe my hand on the sack. When I looked up she was gone.
Shit.
"Essy!" I called.
No response.
"Essy!" I said, louder this time.
"Up here!"
She was on the roof.
How in the hell...
I walked over to just below here. Quickly she explained how to climb up, and in a matter of minutes, which included spilling the whole can of peaches into the bushes below, I was crouching beside her, a little nervous at being up so high.
"It's fine," she smiled, and for the first time today she looked slightly sane. "Come over this way. Me and Niall always hid from the bullies up here. There was a little dent in the roof somewhere near here. That was the exact place."
I cautiously followed her along the roof, hoisting the sack over my shoulder. In a matter of moments she stopped dead in front of a large depression in the roof. I looked down.
There was some old writing carved around the outside of the sun-bleached dip in the black roofing.
King Ni and Queen Essy's Secret Kingdom
What in the hell...
And for some reason, there was a note, stuck in the very center of the dent.
Essy leaned down to pick it up, and opened it cautiously.
And suddenly her eyes filled with tears.
