Niall's POV:

I stared out the window of the taxi I was sitting in alone.

For some reason, I felt especially drained today. Who knew that auditioning for X Factor could change my life so drastically.

Midnight memories had just come out. Now I was driving into town to get a bagel and I was pretty sure I would be bombarded by fans, when years ago, no one would even notice my existence.

I continued staring out the window. I spotted a small girl running along the sidewalk. She had fiery read hair streaming behind her. When she stopped for a moment I saw that it cascaded past her waist, thick and wavy. It reminded me of someone's hair, but I couldn't remember whose.

That's when I noticed five boys chasing after her. She began to run again, screaming for help.

"STOP!" I yelled at the taxi driver, throwing a wad of cash at him. "I NEED TO GO!"

I threw open the door, and, slamming it behind me, took off after the boys. I was running so fast I was sure no one would recognize me.

The girl had vanished around a corner, as had the boys. I turned sharply, just in time to see her on the ground.

"How do you like this? Dirt. Stupid foster moron. You mummy and daddy probably thought you were too ugly to keep. Nobody likes you!" The tallest of the dark haired boys yelled gleefully.

The girl looked no older than six, but the boys had to be at least ten.

"Stupid dirt!" Screamed another, kicking the little girl in the stomach. Hard.

I ran over. "HEY!" I shouted. "BACK OFF!" The five boys looked up. None of them reached any higher than my shoulder. They stared at me.

"Whatever," the tallest boy said, and looking supremely annoyed, the boys slouched away.

I kneeled down beside the girl. She had skin so pale, you would have thought she was dead.Not a freckle in sight. Again this reminded me of someone, but I couldn't think who.

Her eyes were beautiful, large and bright blue. A lot like mine, actually.

"What's your name love?" I asked kindly.

"E." She said flatly. "My name is E."

She got up, dusting off her gray legging, and blue dress. Her arm was covered in mud and blood, and she winced as she tried to walk away.

"Hey wait!" I said, grabbing her arm. She screamed and turned around to punch me straight in the face.

I stopped, shocked. This hadn't hurt at all, but I was surprised she didn't know who I am. She seemed to think I was a kidnapper.

I grabbed her arm again, and again she turned and tried to punch me in the face, but she missed. I held on.

"LET GO OF ME!" She screamed.

"I'm Niall Horan, from One Direction," I said calmly, not letting go.

She squinted at me.

"So... do you know who I am?"

"No."

I stared at her.

"I'm a member of the band-"

"Yeah... yeah... I know who you are, I think," she sighed, rolling her beautiful eyes.

"What did you say your name was?"

"E," she said shortly.

"E? Is that short for something?" I asked politely.

"Yes," she said. "But I hate my name. Everyone at school makes fun of it."

"Where are your parents?" I asked.

"Dunno," she said, wriggling her arm around in my hand.

"What's your full name? Should I call your parents?"

"Espy Horan," she said, wriggling her arm more forcefully. "And I'm a foster child. I dunno where my parents are. Everyone at school says they hated me so they gave me away. My foster mum says my mom just didn't want me."

Only one thing caught in my brain from what she had just said.

"What did you say your last name was?"

"Horan," she said, useing her little pale finger to pull at the hand holding her arm.

And then it hit me.
