Broken Glass Slipper

Try

*Flashback in Emma's Point of View*

I tried to scream for help, but a hand covered my mouth.

"Shh. I'll go slow," he murmured. "I'll go slow."

Shaking my head, I tried to move my hands, only to find them tied behind my back. I writhed in discomfort as his hands began to roam my body, discarding my jeans.

He slowly slipped my panties down, and stuck something inside me. His finger. It felt good. But it was all wrong.

I managed to slip my mouth from under his hand and scream, "Help me! Someone he-" before his hand found my mouth again. I felt a warmth gather in my stomach, and right before it was about to explode, I heard a loud voice bellow, "WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?"

I heard his terrified stutters, and the last thing I remember was slamming my head against a brick wall.

---

Emma's Point of View

"Emma? Emma! Mary, what's happening?" he screamed, cradling me in his arms.

"You've brought back a memory," Mary answered glumly.

"I did what? Wait-"

"Niall, you've done enough. Calm down, and let me wake her," Mary said, pulling Niall away, and crouching down next to me.

I felt her shaking my arm, and finally found enough courage to open my eyes and face the world. Mary looked at me, a solemn expression on her face.

"You okay, Em?" She asked cautiously.

I nodded, not wanting to talk about it with Niall standing so close.

Mary helped me stand and walked me to her car.

"Wait! Emma, I-"

"Niall..." I cut him off, closing my eyes and turning away.

"Emma. Please let me see you again. I'm in England for two more months. Please," Niall pleaded, his eyes widening.

I glanced at Mary who gave me a look, as if to say, "Just look at the poor boy." I sighed, and said, "Where would you see me? I have no place safe enough."

Mary piped up, saying, "Here! You could meet him here, and I'll let you get off early so you two can see each other!"

Niall grinned, and nodded, clasping Mary's hand as a thank you. He looked at me expectantly, and I stared at Mary before slowly nodding. He smiled even wider, and started to walk away. "I'll see you tomorrow, Emma," he shouted, while he was halfway down the street, waving.

I opened the car door, and plopped down in the passenger seat. "Mary, he's a total stranger. I can't meet him here. I don't know him well enough, what if-"

"Emma. He followed you to a day care center, twenty minutes away. He waited for you while you were changing. He obviously cares for you, and while you may not understand why, I do. And I'm telling you, you have to spend time with him. Get to know him so he isn't a stranger anymore. Yes, it might not be safe. But I'll be here every second. All you have to do is say the word, and I'll make him go. Just give him a chance. Please," Mary argued, waving her arms to emphasize.

I set my head on the head rest and closed my eyes. "Fine," I mumbled. "But I want to hear an explanation someday."

Mary squealed, and got in the car as well. She drove me home, and right before I closed the door, she said, "Don't forget, Prince Charming is coming tomorrow!"

I rolled my eyes, and smiled. As if.

---

The next morning came faster than I expected. Grumbling, I rolled out of bed and logged onto the ancient contraption that was my college computer. I smiled when I saw the professor had canceled class today, and went downstairs to make breakfast for the step-family.

I knocked on Felicity's door, and flinched when I heard her sickly sweet tone.

"Come in," she said quietly.

I opened the door and hesitantly stepped inside. Felicity was sitting on the edge of her bed.

"Good morning," Felicity said. "It is a good morning, isn't it?"

I slowly nodded, refusing to meet her eyes.

I heard a patting noise, and looked up to see Felicity patting the bed next to her. Lurching to a start, I walked to the bed, and slowly sat down. Felicity put her arm around me, and my shoulders tensed.

Felicity slowly began stroking my hair. "You know, Arabelle and Jessa did not attend the party last night."
I made no movement, rigidly assuming a statue-like countenance.

"And because you got them ready, you must be accountable," Felicity continued. "But it's okay, right? People make mistakes."

I continued to make no movement, until Felicity said, "Answer me, Emma."

I hesitantly nodded.

Suddenly, there was a tight grip on my hair, and a yank, pulling my head back, and wrenching my neck in an extremely painful position.

"Wrong," Felicity growled.

Twisting her hand further in my hair, Felicity pulled my head further back until I bent back, whimpering in pain.

"Please! I didn't do anything wrong!" I screamed, trying to escape her grasp.

"Arabelle and Jessa were not invited to the after party. You were the one who helped them get ready. So, you must face the consequences," Felicity shouted in my face before releasing my hair, grabbing the same wrist she always does, and hauling me to my feet. She squeezed with a practiced hand, knowingly causing pain.

I lowered my gaze and tried to hide the tears that were forming.

Pulling me closer, Felicity whispered, "No breakfast. No lunch. No dinner."

---

After I served Felicity, Arabelle, and Jessa their breakfast, I hurried out the door and began my walk to work.

Once I arrived, there was already a mess to clean.

Within three hours, Mary and I were able to feed the kids and put them all down for a nap.

Mary and I ate in the safety of the office. Originally, I didn't have a lunch, but Mary had grown accustomed to my lack of nourishment, and I had grown accustomed to accepting instead of arguing.

By the time we had finished our lunch, there was one boy awake, who decided to wake everyone else up.

We put on Finding Nemo for the kids to watch, and by the time it was over, each child had been picked up by their parent.

An hour before closing time, Mary pushed me out the back door. I stumbled out by the tall iron gate and smiled in surprise when I saw Niall standing there. He really did come, I thought to myself.

We sat down on the warm concrete in silence.

"You look very pretty today," Niall said suddenly.

I laughed and replied, "No, I don't."

He nodded, saying, "Yeah, you do. You look even prettier without makeup. It hides your skin."

I blushed, and answered, "Well, lucky for you, that was the first time I wore makeup. And probably the last. Same goes for the dress. And the hair."

Niall tilted his head in confusion, but shrugged and let it go. "You look nervous," he said.

I nodded. "I am nervous."

"Why?"

"Umm... I don't exactly know you. And you're really close to me," I mumbled.

"Oh. Sorry," Niall mumbled, shifting away.

I ducked my head and shrugged.

We sat in silence until I felt a shaky hand touch my wrist.

"What happened?" Niall asked, concerned.

"Oh... Nothing," I replied, slowly drawing my wrist to my side.

"Are you sure?" Niall asked, scooting closer. "Do you have an abusive boyfriend? Father?"

"No," I replied, not returning his gaze.

"You know you can talk to me, right?" Niall said, touching my cheek and turning my head to face him.

"It was nothing!" I exclaimed. "I did something wrong, and I received a punishment. That's all."

"What did you do?" Niall asked curiously.

"Lets not talk about it. Please?" I said, returning my gaze to the ground.

Niall slowly nodded and and we carried on with our awkward conversation.

---

A month had passed, and Niall and I still met outside the daycare every day. Our awkward conversations had long since vanished, turning into long discussions, but I still kept my life from him.

One day after work, I was about to walk home when I saw Felicity standing next to her car. My heart started pounding, and I stumbled as I walked towards her.

"Get in the car," she demanded, a cruel smile on her face.

Swallowing thickly, I did as she said, wondering what could be awaiting me.
