Never Let Me Go

Chapter 7

"How are your classes going?" Harry asks. It feels weird to be having a normal conversation with him.

"They were okay. How is everyone back in England?"

"They're good, gran was mad that I didn't bring you with." I feel him chuckle lightly as my head rests against his chest.

"Did you tell her why I didn't come?"

Gran probably hates me now for hurting Harry.

"Yeah." He admits. "She was on your side." He laughs again.

"What?"

"I told her why you broke up with me, and she said you had good intentions."

I relax a little with his words, thankfully she doesn't hate me.

"I'm sorry."

"Stop apologizing."

I take a deep breath and I want to tell him I'm sorry eighty billion times for what I've done. I feel terrible, and even though he still wants me and keeps telling me to stop apologizing, I can't help but feel guilty.

"Will you come with me to dinner with my parents tonight?" He asks as he traces patterns onto my back with his fingertips.

"Um..."

"I think they like you more than they like me, and I can't handle them alone." I can tell he's smiling.

"If you want me to." I agree, but I'm not sure if I want to.

"I want nothing more."

"Why are you going to dinner with them?" I ask curiously.

"They insisted on having dinner before I went back and they're leaving for New York tomorrow."

Eventually we get out of bed and get ready for the dinner seeing as it's already four in the afternoon. Harry insists I don't need to dress up for tonight, but I feel like I need to look nice. It's dinner with his parents, and I want to make a good impression. I've met them twice, the first time I was wearing Harry's sweats and the second was in Arizona when I was a mess after the whole Rachel thing.

"You have definitely gotten hotter in the last two months, if that's even possible." Harry smirks when I walk out of the bathroom in my navy blue sleeveless dress.

"Right back at ya." I wink. He does though, his hair is pushed out of his face, and he looks handsome as ever in his black jeans and button up shirt.

Harry drives us to some restaurant a few minutes away that I've never been to. I can't help my nerves, and I think Harry senses that when he squeezes my hand tightly as we walk in.

"Hello, son." His father greets Harry with a firm handshake and I'm surprised when his mom pulls me in for a hug.

"It's nice to see you again, Aubrey." She smiles.

"Aubrey, you look lovely." Harry's father smiles at me before we all sit down. I take the seat next to Harry while his parents sit down across from us.

"How's your grandmother, Harry?" His father asks.

"She's good." He's monotonous.

"And you're going back when?" His mother asks.

"I told you, the first week in September." He snaps and takes a sip of his water. I rest my hand on his knee and tighten my grip, he's being rude for no reason. I know they haven't been the nicest to him, but he needs to respect his parents.

"You know, they have excellent schools here that are just as good as Cambridge, why must you go back to England?"

I want to agree with Harry's mother when she asks, but I understand why he wants to go back. Even though I want him to stay here, I will not try to convince him. It's not fair to him.

"Because that's my home. All of our family and my friends are there."

"I hope you plan to focus on your schoolwork and not on parties with your friends." His dad adds in.

"Since when do you guys care anyways? Wouldn't you rather have me far away so you don't have to worry about me?" Harry scoots back his chair and stands up, walking away from the table.

I watch him walk out of the restaurant, and I have no idea what to do. I look at his parents, and they look equally speechless as I am.

"I should go check on him, excuse me." I stand up and follow him out.

"Harry, what the hell?" I see him practically running to his car, his hair sticking up from him running his hand through it.

"I can't believe them! Since when do they care about me? They have got to be kidding me." He almost laughs as he yells.

"Of course they care about you, you didn't have to be so rude."

"You don't understand!" He runs his fingers through his curls and leans up against the car.

"Then help me understand. I know they haven't been the best to you, but they're still your parents. They obviously care about you if they don't want you to go back."

"Well they have a funny way of showing it." He scoffs. I walk closer to him and take his hands into mine.

"I don't understand either, Aubs. How can they just go from practically abandoning me for all of these years, to pretending they care. They are exhausting, this is why I need to go back." He doesn't look at me.

"I'm sorry, Harry." I run my hand down his cheek. "At least they're trying? We should go back inside. You're not going to see them for awhile."

"And that's a bad thing!" He laughs. "I'm not going back in there."

"Alright, well I am." I say hoping he changed his mind. I don't want to be rude to them.

"I'll be waiting in the car." He opens the door and I roll my eyes as I walk back inside. So stubborn.

"Sorry, uh, he's not coming back." I apologize to his parents upon my return and take a seat.

"You don't have to stay Aubrey, we know how Harry can be sometimes."

"It's okay." I assure them.

"I don't understand why he has the need to act out like this." His father says and I see his mother shrug her shoulders.

I awkwardly take a bite of my salad, not wanting to get in the middle of their family issues.

"So how is Stanford? Do you like it so far?"

"Yeah, it's wonderful." I smile, thankfully his father is changing the topic of conversation.

"So Harry says your pre-med, that's fantastic."

"Yeah, it's always been something that's interested me." I try to keep the conversation going but my phone won't quit vibrating in my purse.

I pull the device out and check it under the table, two missed calls and a text from Harry:

You don't have to stay, come back to the car.

I shove my phone back in the bag and continue to make small talk with his parents. I sort of feel guilty for the way Harry acted towards them even though he had a reason to.

We finish our meals and I apologize once again for Harry's behavior. I meet him back out in the car and he still looks angry.

"Why did you stay?" He sounds much calmer than he looks.

"I didn't want to be rude."

"Are you calling me rude?" I can see the smirk playing on his lips.

"Yep, now let's go."

"What do you want to do?" He asks and follows my request to leave.

"Doesn't matter to me, how about-" I'm cutoff by my phone ringing.

"Who is it?" Harry asks as I look at the screen.

"Hey Liam!" I answer.

"Hey Aubrey, I thought you might want to know that Harry is back in California. I think he's getting the rest of his stuff before he comes back here."

"Yeah, I ran into him." I laugh.

"What happened? Are you okay?"

"More than okay. We're back together. He's with me right now, actually." I beam. I feel Harry rest his hand in my leg and I can't wipe the smile off of my face.

"Really? That's great! Well tell him I say hi, I'll let you two catch up."

"Thanks, Liam. Talk to you later."

"Bye, Aubrey." He says and hangs up.

"Liam says hi."

"Why doesn't he ever call me?" Harry jokes.

"I'm glad we're back together, Aubs."

"Me too." I look at him and take in his beautiful profile as he keeps his eyes on the road.
