A New Family

Chapter 50

Lily's POV:

"Well here we are," Kyle pulled up to the front of the school. He sounded disappointed, I, on the other hand couldn't wait to get out of that black Ford Truck and get as far away as possible from Kyle. As I scrambled out of the Truck, being careful not to rip my fragile dress, I wondered how he haunted me so easily. What was it about him?

"Hey, you okay? You look, unsettled." I looked at Luke, his eyes filled with concern. I blinked, shaking my hand a little.

"I'm fine." I walked towards the school and rubbed my arms, wishing for a little warmth on the forty five second walk to the doors. Then I felt a warm, arm around me, Luke's arm. I desperately wanted to be held closer in his embrace but my instincts screamed at me to push his arm away from me. There ended up being a tie with his arm continuing to be wrapped around me; neither shoving his arm away, or pulling him closer.

Right before we reached the door, Luke stopped me. I looked at him, questioning him with my eyes. He dipped his hand into his pants pocket, pulled out a slim box, and held it out to me. I smiled, that was so sweet of him, to give me a gift. I took of the lid and picked up a purple corsage. I slipped it on my wrist and fingered the soft petals; I met his eyes.

"What kind of flower is it?"

"Orchid. Do you like it? It matches with my suit." I put my wrist near his chest and compared his shirt and tie to the flower.

"That's a first, a guy who actually knows how to match things." Luke laughed and opened the door for me.

"Thank you." Luke nodded and gestured for me to go inside. "No, really, it must of been expensive and the suit and tie must of been too. So, thank you, for everything." I walked in, hoping I didn't lead him on too much. Apparently I did the same with Jacob.

Luke took my hand as we walked the hallways to the gym, I decided I wouldn't fight tonight. We were a little late (I swear, it's like Kyle wanted to keep us in that vehicle forever), but I enjoyed the silence, especially when I was walking with the hottest guy in school.

I smelt the B. O. before I heard the music, and the music was really loud. I crinkled my nose at the stench and felt the temperature soaring, the closer we got the gym. I started to get a bit nervous as we neared the door and I think my body language gave it away.

"Hey, come on, loosen up, I promise, you'll have a fun time tonight. Don't worry about the smell, you'll get used to it in about ten minutes." I laughed, lightening my mood and strode more confidently to the door. What's the worst that can happen? My entire family died in one day, my new family forgot my birthday, the guy I loved, hates me, and a guy that I've only known for about three weeks say he loves me! Nothing worse than that can happen!

When my hand grasped the handle, Luke squeezed my other hand reassuringly. I don't know why but that really comforted me, made me feel like I'm safe. Opening the door, my eyes lit up. The gym looked amazing. The walls were covered in black sheets, the room dark, but with colorful lights floating about, and at least ten disco balls twirling their shining lights on every ones finery.

Speaking of finery, some people went all out. The guys were all wearing tuxes and suits, I didn't spot one pair of jeans or tennis shoes! But the girls, were dazzling, you know besides the fact that almost all of them were wearing black dresses. I swear, I was the only one wearing a white dress, any one who wasn't wearing a black dress was either wearing dark red or navy blue. I stood out like a penguin in Australia!

I think everyone realized that someone broke the dark color scheme because everyone seemed to be staring at me, it had gone quiet and all eyes were focused on me. I looked down at my dress, just to make sure it didn't have anything on it and then adjusted my obvious, red, (it wasn't quite auburn yet) hair.

"You look flawless, don't worry, they're all staring at you because you look beautiful." Luke whispered into my ear. The silence continued, although the music blared Tressure, by Bruno Mars. Luke pulled me to the further into the unmoving room.

"Come on," he muttered.

"What are you going to do?" I asked nervously.

"What do you think?" I looked helplessly at him as he motioned to stay put. I watched as he made his way to the center of the gym floor. People moved away from us, circling us, him only four meters away from me. At first, all I heard was the sound waves of the upbeat song but then Luke started to dance.

He was incredible. That's all I could say. You know how girls love it when guys sing? Or better yet, serenade them? Well, this is better. I somehow knew that this amazing dance, was just for me, for Luke to show to everyone, but really, only for me. I smiled as he moved around me, his feet faster than the speed of light. He made me dizzy, just looking at him, his eyes never left mine, even when he spun. He looked more than just hot, dancing. He looked sexy.

As the song neared the ending, Luke came close to me, him out of breath from his fantastic performance. He picked up one of my hands and twirled me until the song ended, and on the last note he brought my hand to his lips and kissed it. Sweeter than an angel from heaven, that kiss. My hand burned from the contact and I was overwhelmed by the feelings that were consuming my mind.

I almost didn't hear the drowning applause. Then I remembered where I was again. When the applause died down, the students went back to normal, as if nothing had happened when I entered, but I was relieved. I looked around, no one was really dancing, there was some, but in tight circular groups.

"Dance with me?" Asked Luke, I looked sympathetically at him.

"I'm such a bad dancer, no way."

"Too bad that I'm more stubborn than you."

"What?" Luke didn't answer and closed the space between us, him taking my right hand, putting my left on his shoulder, and his left on my waist. I turned his head towards the DJ and nodded, immediately a different tune started to play, something that sounded a little older, something that typically wouldn't be played at a dance for teens.

"Since you think you're bad at dancing, I'll teach you, starting with the easiest, ballroom dancing." He moved his right foot forward, I quickly moved mine back too. Unfortunately, I moved it back too much and started to slip on some punch. Before I could fall, Luke grabbed my waist and pulled me into him. I wasn't used to being this close to him and took a step back.

"Sorry." I mumbled.

"Don't worry, I have patience, you'll get better." I smiled, Luke always knows how to make me feel better.
