A New Family

Chapter 40

Luke's POV:

When Lily's sparkling green eyes looked up at me, I saw sleepiness and a lot of pain. Okay, okay, I know what you're thinking, how did I get so good at empathy? I don't know. I'm just really good at reading people's body language and apparently, Lily doesn't like to look at me because it hurts her. What did I do?

"Where were you for an entire week?" I asked, remembering the unfair situation.

"My mom and I went to the Cayman Islands, we just arrived back last night." She yawned, covering her mouth and stretching.

"Well you gotta wake up cause you have a lot of homework and class work to catch up on."

"Luke's right, Lily, you both got a hundred percent on that test, so I except more from you," Mrs. Denton added. She piled a stack of worksheets on Lily's desk that was two inches.

"This is all the make up work and you need to finish it by tomorrow."

"But Mrs. Denton! Most of these papers have stuff that I haven't even learned!" Lily posted.

"Well this is a lesson to not go on vacation during school! Oh, by the way Lily, if you don't turn all the pages in by tomorrow, completed perfectly, I'm kicking you out of class, into Algebra."

Lily looked horrified at the stack of assignments. She was about to grab one but she yawned once again, bigger than the last.

"You have got to wake up. You only have 24 hours to finish this!"

"Will is be enough?" She asked hopefully.

"Maybe. You should get started now, I can distract the teacher for about fifteen minutes."

Lily nodded and pushed the first paper off the pile and adjusted it onto her desk. I watched as she started yawning, again, and again, and again. I groaned, if she kept yawning, she might end up falling asleep while doing homework. What will wake her up?

Suddenly, the door was swung open and a masked girl with a huge cup in hand, (she was wearing a skirt) ran next to Lily and threw water at her face, startling her concentrated study. The girl laughed and ran away.

"Are you okay?" I asked Lily.

"I'm awake now," she gave a small smile (god why did she have to be so cute?) and wiped a bit of the water off her face. It also drenched her red curls, and it seemed to make them even curlier.

"Are they okay?" Mrs. Denton rushed over towards Lily. Well at least we now know she has a small heart.

"I'm fine Mrs. Denton, it was a it of a shock but my hair dries quickly."

"Not you!" Never mind, she has no heart. "The papers! It took a really long time to print them all and I'm not doing it again!" Rage bubbled in my stomach.

"Why you little-" I started.

"It's okay, they're all dry. Can I be excused to the girls bathroom?" Lily asked politely, despite the teacher's rudeness.

"Fine, do want anyone to help you?"

"No, I'm good," she walked out and I slumped in my desk, bored.

Mrs. Denton cleaned Lily's desk with some tissues and added another packet to her stack. Then she passed out the same packet to the rest of the class. Homework.

I could concentrate better when Lily wasn't here so I finished the packet in five minutes. Most people were still on the third problem. You could say I'm a genius, but I don't care, I mean I like doing better than everyone, but school isn't my strongest suit. I play football. (soccer for Americans like Lily) That pretty much rounds it up. But I'm pretty good at every sport. Also, my mom made me take gymnastics until I was ten so everything Lily did in dodge ball, I can do that too.

And my mom made me take dancing lessons too, I know tap, hip hop, jazz, contemporary, and what I'm most ashamed of - Ballet. I'm pretty flexible for a guy, I can do all three splits but I chose not to because it's rather painful for guys. But the hip hop and contemporary comes in handy at school dances. People normally only know the thriller and the disco moves- lame. There's only a few people here that really know how to move. In my grade it's only me and Sophie who went to the same dance school as me.

When Lily came back in, an immediate smile was plastered on my face. What can I do to spend more time with her? (You know, besides the fact that we have all our classes together) She sat down at her desk and put her face in her hands.

Oh yeah, maybe I should help her with that.

"Lily, you could come home with me and I can help you out, if you want."

"Really?" Her eyes lit up, a smile on the brink of her lips.

"Yeah," I said to those beautiful lips.

"Thank you so much," she grinned. I smiled back at her, our eyes locked on each other. She blushed and looked down. Her eyes froze, as if remembering something.

"Actually, I'm not sure of this is such a good idea."

"Lily you really need help. Come on, I promise we'll have fun and you'll be home by eight."

"I don't know..."

"Yep, you're coming over, it's decided" her lips fought to smile, I could tell a lot was going through her mind.

"Well, as long as we finish everything." She stated hesitantly.

"YES!" She laughed and concentrated back on her paper, with a lingering smile. If only she knew how much I'm smiling on the inside.
