New Sister
Lycca
Everybody is already waiting for us. Harry froze at the doorstep. First I looked at him, confused, and then at the people in the room and saw that he looked to the only woman in the room I didn't know. “What's wrong?” I asked Harry. He took a deep breath and put me in a chair. “Nothing.” The unknown woman sat next to me and introduced herself as Lycca. She was a friend of Jay and she had no family in England, so she spend the holidays with Jay and her family. She was kind of familiar. I couldn't put my finger on it. But she was very kind. Harry didn't like her and he didn't try to hide it. “Harry, seriously, what is wrong with you?” I whispered annoyed. “She has to tell you.” “Harry, it's Christmas. Can you forget about whatever it is, just for now?” “Okay, I'll try.” “Thanks.”
Well, he didn't do well. I was tried to ignore it though. After dinner finished, Harry was about to move me to the couch when Lycca stopped him. “Can I talk to her in private?” Harry made no move. “Harry, it's okay.” He laughed. “If you don't mind, I stay.” “I do mind, so please?” He left reluctantly and Lycca turned to me, nervously. Then I remembered it. She was at my dad's funeral and had randomly hugged me before leaving. “Where do you want to talk about?” “Elizabeth, I don't think you'll understand what I want to tell you, but you have to right to know. I actually wanted to wait a little longer, but in light of recent events I thought that I'd better tell you now.” She paused. I didn't say anything. “I am your mother.” “Excuse me?” I didn't know what I'd expected, but certainly not this. “I didn't want to tell you, but when I saw you in the hospital... I felt so guilty. For not seeing you growing up. And all I can say now, is that it is the worst decision of my life. But I can't turn back time.” Wait, hospital? That explained why he was so hostile towards her. And he hadn't told me that. I tried to progress what Lycca had told me, but I couldn't. “Why did you leave?” I starred at the table. “I work for the university of Westminster. I travel a lot and I to be honest, in that period, I was never home. So, I had to choose between my carreer and you and your father.” “And of course, you choose your carreer.” “No, initially, I choose for you. But then I somebody asked me for a research. I couldn't say no, but it meant that I had to move to Brazil. The research took five years. When I came back, I had again other obligations. Your father never forgave me for leaving you. I wanted to be a part of your life, but I couldn't bring myself to go to you, knowing that I'd missed the first nine years of your life by the time I was finished. I was so focused on my carreer that I'd lost my chance to be your mother.” “Why tell me now?” “After everything that happened, I decided that you had the right to know. It's up to you what you want to do with it.” I shook my head. “I've done sixteen years without you. I think I can say that I don't need you in my life.”
