Karen looked at the ground as she kept talking. Her face full of pain.
“I didn’t understand why nobody wanted to be his friends, until he came home crying one day and told me everything. He had a crush on a girl for a long time, but she made fun of him infront of everyone. I never thought anyone would do that to him. I mean, to me, Liam was a little angel.”
I just realized she was talking about me.
“Then he suddenly changed, he said he will show everyone, the bullies and the girl that made fun of him, that he’s better than that. I think the main reason for him to change so dramatically like this is probably the girl.” She looked so sad.
So Liam became Alex because of me. I never thought I would affect someone so much. It felt like something just stabbed my heart.
“But I’m so glad he finally made friends like you.” She smiled at me. “Thank you for taking care of Liam.”
I forced myself to smile back. I have never felt so guilty in my life and I don’t think I ever will.
We sat there in awkward silence as we waited for the surgeons to finish their work with Alex… Liam.
“Liam had talked about you.” Karen turned to me.
My eyes widened. Talk about me… About how rude I was in grade 8?
“He said you were in his class in grade 8 and you’re a really nice girl.” She smiled.
I let out a sigh of relief and smiled. Everytime she compliments me it feels like a knife stabs my heart. I usually never lie. I’m not used to it. But of course I don’t want her to find out that I was the one who did this to Alex. A little part of me actually does hope she finds out just so I don’t have to keep lying anymore.
How I wish Rachel was here.
The surgeon suddenly comes out. Both me and Karen quickly swarmed him.
“Is he ok?” I asked
