Epilogue: Three Years Later

Chapter 33: Epilogue (Liam’s P.O.V.)

It was so hard to believe that it had been so long. Three years ago today we were standing in these same spots, as we have for the past few years, coming to tell an old friend that we hadn’t forgotten her. The five of us had come every year, this year Eleanor and Perrie came too. Louis and Amber didn’t last because they couldn’t be around each other without thinking about Tori.

“Hey Tori,” I had whispered when I had walked up before the others. I felt as if I needed to say something to her every time I was here. Not just because she was gone and here forever, but also because she shouldn’t be gone. The others have told me it wasn’t my fault, but it still bothers me to this day. I had promised that I would drive her everywhere because of her bad luck with cars, but that night I told her I couldn’t. I broke that promise and then she ended up dead.

“We brought it for you, Tori.” Louis said with a faint smile as he placed that old CD player on the ground by her headstone. We had our old song that had recorded together for her. We had only released Party Like There’s No Tomorrow, which soared to number one. Everyone loved Tori and wished that she was still here. We had kept the other song for ourselves though. That was a piece of Tori that the world couldn’t have, it was a moment that we wanted to have that no one else had.

We all stood there in silence as the slow soft melody of the track began playing.

Liam (Me):

“We would drive in my car,
Just cruisin’ with the windows down,
Not really going anywhere,
We were just going out on the town.”

Harry:

“Wasting my time behind the wheel,
Not having a care in the world,
Nothing else mattered,
Cause in that moment you were my girl.”

Boys:

“We danced to our heartbeats,
The rest of the world slipping away,
Listening to our rhythm,
As the heartstrings slowly fray,
It all slipped through our fingers,
But I can still remember.”

Louis:

“Talking on the phone,
Smiling at your words and laughing at my jokes,
I wish we could still do it,
But it’ll all too late and my heart is broke.”

Niall:

“All the messages we’d send,
Our replies and smiley faces,
But all it took was one mistake,
And all our time was wasted.”

The Boys:

“We danced to our heartbeats,
The rest of the world slipping away,
Listening to our rhythm,
As the heartstrings slowly fray.
It all slipped through our fingers,
But I can still remember.”

Zayn and Tori:

“Those moments were perfect,
And I wouldn’t trade them for a minute.
Those memories I will always cherish,
And when I said, ‘I love you’ I meant it.”

“We danced to our heartbeats,
The rest of the world slipping away,
Listening to our rhythm,
As the heartstrings slowly fray.”

Everyone:

“We danced to our heartbeats,
The rest of the world slipping away,
Listening to our rhythm,
As the heartstrings slowly fray.
It all slipped through our fingers,
But I can still remember.”

Zayn and Tori:

“When I said ‘I love you’ I meant it.”

My heart ached as I listened to Tori’s voice melt with Zayn’s to finish the song. It almost felt as if she were beside him singing as she always had. But I knew that wasn’t true.

It wasn’t long after that we started to leave. We couldn’t be there for too long because it was too painful. Everyone had already turned to go except for Zayn, Perrie, and me. Looked over as Perrie looked at me sadly, she knew what coming here meant to Zayn. I nodded my head to her as I turned to go myself, she followed. He always stayed behind after everyone else and liked to just sit with her for a little while. Perrie understood how much Tori meant to Zayn. She knew that he was still in love with her and would always miss her. We all would.

I sighed to myself as we made it back to the car with the others. From there, we could still see Zayn. He had sat down in front of the headstone. A part of me wanted to go over and join him, but knew I couldn’t. This was his time and I couldn’t bring myself to go back there. I would remember the good times I had with Tori, not these sad ones. I now know one of the most important lessons of my life. We should cherish every moment while it counts, because we never know when we are going to lose them.
