What I Don't Remember
Home
“Mom, what are you doing?”
She started to laugh.
“Honey, I’m just documenting this moment for my scrapbook. You’ll thank me one day.”
I rolled my eyes and got out of the car. We walked up to the porch and my mom was just about to turn the key in the door when I started hearing voices on the other side. I glanced at my mom who had the warmest smile on her face. She finally opened the door and I felt my jaw drop.
“Welcome home, Paris!”
Standing there was a group of about fifty people who looked absolutely ecstatic to see me. There were balloons everywhere and a colorful banner that said welcome home. I was absolutely flattered, but at the same time I wanted to go straight to my room and cry. Harry was gone and suddenly my life felt like it held no purpose. I managed to smile as everyone clapped for me with bright smiles on their faces. My little brother Timothy ran up to me and gave me the tightest hug I think I’ve ever received. When he pulled away he handed me a teddy bear that said best sister ever. I smiled and pulled him into another hug before greeting the other guests. Although there were many people standing around that I recognized, there were even more that I didn’t. I stopped and chatted with a few familiar faces before spotting Lana and Taisie in the corner. They must have seen me looking at them because soon they were walking towards me.
“Paris, are you still mad?” Lana asked, stopping in front of me.
I crossed my arms over my chest.
“What do you think?”
I tried to move past them, but Taisie grabbed my arm.
“Let go of me!” I yelled, catching the attention of most of the guests.
Taisie’s nails dug into my arm as I struggled to free myself from her grasp.
“Paris, this is ridiculous! You are my best friend, why are you acting like this?”
I stood there in silence and looked around the room. Everyone was staring at us with their hands over their mouths. I returned my attention back to Taisie and gave her the coldest look I could manage.
“I am not your friend.” I said, snatching my arm away.
Taisie shook her head as her eyes gradually filled with tears. I was about to say something that was sure to finish the job when I felt someone breathing down my neck.
“Is there a problem here?”
I turned around to see a tall man hovering over me. He wore a dark hood over his head and the only features I could make out were his thick mustache and eyebrows. I had never seen this guy before which made me wonder if I had known him at some point in my past. I opened my mouth to respond as Taisie headed for the door. Shortly after she left Lana handed me a notebook.
“Read this when you get the chance.” She said softly, before following after Taisie.
I was casually flipping through the pages of the journal when I remembered that the man with the mustache was still standing in front of me. I closed the notebook and glanced up to find him staring down my shirt. I was about to smack him when I noticed the color of his eyes. They were a rare shade of green that I had seen several times before. When his eyes met with mine he grinned, and soon he was guiding me threw the house by my arm. We had just gotten to a secluded area in the house when he stopped and handed me a melting popsicle.
“Welcome home.” He smiled.
I laughed and then ripped off the fake mustache and eyebrows with my free hand.
“Harry, you are so predictable.” I chuckled.
“I know.”
He wrapped his arms around me and for the first time I truly felt like I was home.
