Animals can talk and do just not in the same way/language as us...although they have their ways of letting us know how they feel. Also when you know a particular animal well (ie a certain specific bird) you learn the meanings of their calls, such as the magpies we feed have a call for when they want to be fed, hand fed, feed me now I'm starting, good night etc. So your hamster is probabaly answering you but you just can't understand it ;)
