Don't Let Me Go

Nine

I grab the cup from the barista, storming out of the small shop and onto the sparsely populated street.
“Niall! Niall, wait!” I keep walking, head low as I head towards my parked car. “Ni-”
“What?” I shout, turning on my heel to face her. “How could you possibly explain how when I thought you were in Australia, you're here! When you dropped this bomb shell on me, it was entirely based on a lie.” I hiss the last word as I turn and catch sight of my car, unlocking it.
“Babe-” She begins. “Don't call me babe.” I say, echoing the exact words Emily had said to me what, two days ago? It seemed like a lifetime. I get into my car and shut the door, only rolling down the window when she slams her tiny fist against the glass.
“Just give me a chance!” She objects. “Good God, Niall; you're being ridiculous!” I just sit there, mouth agape as I look at her with a 'are you fucking kidding me' look.
“That's rich coming from you.” She opens her mouth to say something but stops and purses her lips, thinking for a moment. “Just let me explain. I mean, you know I want to try again, right? I've missed you so much.” My mind blanks for a second. She missed me? What happened to the completely lying to my face thing? But she was my soft spot. I really couldn't deny her anything.
I sigh before giving in. “Okay, but before we talk about the relationship shit later? We need to talk about Carter before anything else.” She winces at the word 'shit' and I mentally smile. She was always telling me to watch my language. For a second she stands there and I hit the unlock button and she jumps to attention before running over to the passenger side and getting in.
“So where do you want to go to talk?” She smiles and I swear it's just like the old days. “Let's go to my place.” She winks at me and I laugh in disbelief before complying to her directions to the lower end of town.
“You live here?” I say, seeing a guy pissing on the side of a building. “Some of us can't afford their own condos, Horan.” I blush and reply, “That's not what I meant. It's just that I've seen at least three drug deals on this street already.” And we're only a good five yards from the street sign.
“Here we are!” She chirps happily, jumping out of the car before it's even fully stopped. I follow as she leads me to an apartment building that looks rather run down.
We walk up a flight of stairs before she stops in front of a door. 4-4-7. “Isn't that-”
“The locker number we used to share?” Yeah, it is.” She interrupts as she digs for her keys in the brown purse she's holding.
She and I had had to share a locker in secondary school as there had been a mix up. We had shared that locker all of year eleven. It was actually how we met.
“Um, excuse me? I think you're at my locker.” I look up from where I had been trying to figure out my combination.
“No, sorry this is mine.” I say, waving the yellow index card we had been given with my free hand.
She takes the card, pink lips pursing together as she compares our card.
“They gave us the same locker.”
“No way.” I take both of our cars and look at them. Sure enough they both read '447'.
“Oh well I guess we'll be sharing until they figure it out, eh?” Good god, Niall. Eh? Really? You suck at flirting.
She winks back before saying, “I guess so.” Well maybe I don't suck that badly.
“Hi, I'm Niall.” I stick out my hand and she takes it.
“I'm-”

The memory is cut off as she waves her hand in front of my face.
“You coming in?” She asks, nodding towards the now open door. I step inside and I have to admit: she made the best with what she had. The room was tidy, consisting of a queen bed, a couch, and a crib. An open doorway showed the small kitchen were there was a small burn spot on the ceiling. Probably her. She sucked at cooking.
“I know what you're thinking and I did not make those scorch marks. They were here when we moved in.” I laugh and nod before she directs me to the couch.
“Okay, so I guess I owe you an explanation.” I nod and she continues to tell me why she did what she did.
Her parents had kicked her out as soon as they found out she was pregnant and was taken in by her best friend. Who after helping her get a job was killed in a drive by shooting. She was walking to the library. She tells me how much she struggled to not fall in depression, seeing as she had no one left. No one except her unborn baby. She worked three jobs right up until she gave birth and finally got this place.
“I just don't have any way to take care of him. I needed your help.” She explains and I frown.
“Well why didn't you just ask for it? I would have gladly given you money.” Her forehead crumples and her lips form into an angry, taut line.
“I don't need your money. I just thought Carter would need his father.”
“But you just-”
“Never mind, Niall.”

One step forward, two steps back.

Notes

Okay this is a long chapter considering I've had four hours of sleep in the last two days. Btw the whole locker thing is a flashback but my phone is being a booty and won't let me put it in italics.
