five: boardwalks & strawberry icee's

The car soon comes to a stop as Claire parks the car. “Aves, are they here yet? You know where they are?” she asks looking back at me through the rearview mirror as she cuts the engine. I just nod my head and reply with a simple “yeah” before undoing my seat belt and climbing out of the car after Harry gets out along with the bag I had on my shoulder.

“Somewhere along the boardwalk, I don’t know,” I say rolling my eyes and shrugging my shoulders as I shut the door after I got out while the others waited for me. The rest of them stand there while I begin to look around for my parents and brother.

After a few minutes, I find a blond fair-skinned woman waving toward me; I soon realize it was my mom. I wave back with a smile and begin to go forward. She was standing beside my father and I spotted my brother near them, with his headphones in his ears and a beanie on his head.

“Avery!! Good to see you, darling! I missed my baby girl!” my mom said as she embraced me into a hug.

“Hi mom!” I exclaimed as she pulls me in for a hug. I tighten my arms around her and hug her tight. She pressed a kiss to my hair as we hugged. I smiled, I was happy that I got the chance to see them even though I last saw them a few months ago.

“Dad!!” I state happily as I go over to the tall man who stood beside my mom and brother. He was wearing a Los Angeles Lakers jersey and a baseball cap on his head. I smile brightly as he pulls me into a hug.

“Hi there sweetheart! We missed you! Jake does too!” he said with a laugh as we pull away.

“Hey there, Squirt! Miss me?” I say with a slight laugh as I hug my brother and ruffle his hair. He nods with a smile as he hugs me. We pull away a few minutes later.

“Yeah, I did, Aves, missed pestering you,” he says looking at me.

“Sure you have, kid,” I mumble with a smile and lightly push him. He just nods and lets out a laugh.

“Who’re they?” Jake points to Claire who was standing with the boys a little ways from where we were.

“My friends I decided to bring, they’re staying with Claire and I for the summer, Jake,” I tell him and roll my eyes.

“Oh,” he says.

“You already know Claire,” I say and look at each of my parents before turning back to where Claire stood with Niall and the other boys.

“Nice to see you again, Claire,” my mom says with a smile and comes forward pulling the dirty blond girl into a hug.

“You too, Mrs. Brooks,” she replies back with a smile.

“This is her boyfriend, Niall,” I say pointing to him who was standing right next to Claire, an arm around her waist.

“And these are his friends, Louis, Zayn, Liam and Harry,” I say motioning to each of the boys as I say their names. As my eyes caught Harry’s gaze, I felt my cheeks heat up. I shift mine away from his to keep myself from breaking out into a smile.

“It sure is nice to meet you all,” my mom says with a smile as she looks at each of the boys.

“You as well,” the five boys respond politely with a nod of their heads.

My dad says the same and gives them a nod. As for my brother, he doesn’t say anything. Rude, much? He was too into his music to process what was going on. Typical Jake being rude to people he’s just met. Guess things have changed since I’ve been off at UCLA.

“Jake! Hello? Aren’t you going to say hi to my new friends?” I ask a bit impatient as I shift the weight onto my other leg and cross my arms over my chest. He doesn’t respond so I lean over and pull one of his ear phones from his ear.

“What the hell was that for? I was listening to that, Avery!” he mumbles in an angry tone as he looks at me. I roll my eyes at his attitude. Sure seems like he’s changed from the well-respected kid I knew before I left for college. That’s what high school does to you.

“You’re being rude, Jake! Aren’t you going to be nice and say hi to my friends?” I ask, my arms still crossed over my chest as I look at my brother.

“Sorry, didn’t realize I was making such a problem.” He replies and mutters ‘hi’ to the rest of them in an irritated fashion. I just roll my eyes at my brother’s antics.

“Well, you are,” I mumble under my breath.

After about five minutes of staring off into space, I feel someone lightly tap me on the arm. I look up only to be met by a pair of green eyes that belonged to Harry. I look around and realize that we were the only ones standing there.

“Where did everyone go?” I ask as I look at him, my eyebrows scrunched together in confusion.

“They all went off to get something to eat, your parents and brother did, not sure where the rest of the crazy lot went, though,” he says with a smile.

“Oh,” I say with a small smile.

“Would you um…would you like to go walk around a bit? I’d like to get to know you better,” he says with a wide smile, his dimples showing. I stand there to think for a few minutes before I nod my head and smile a bit.

“Y-yeah, I’d like that,” I tell him as the two of us begin to walk.

“Great!” he responds with a smile and continued, “So, how long have you lived here–in California, I mean?” he asks looking over at me.

“My whole life, actually, I love it here,” I tell him with a smile.

“That’s great,” he responds.

“What about you? Where did you grow up? I know you’re from the UK of course, but where?” I ask with a small hint of a laugh. He smiles and laughs a bit at my response.

“I grew up in a village called Holmes Chapel, ‘bout three hours away from London,” he says looking at me as we continue to walk. I smile a bit and shift my eyes to the concrete so I could watch where we were going.

“Cool, I’ve always wanted to go there, to London, I’ve wanted to see the London Eye for a long time, I mean I’ve been to New York plenty of times since I have some family there and have obviously seen the Statue of Liberty numerous times. But I’ve always wanted to go there. London is definitely at the top of my list for sure,” I tell him with a small smile as we continue to walk. He just nods with a small smile as he shoves his hands deep in his pockets while we walked along.

“I might have to bring you sometime and show you ‘round, it’s rainy most of the time, but you get used to it,” he says with a cheeky smile as he looks at me. I just smile big in return.

“Are you serious?” I ask as I stare over at him, eyes wide, the smile never leaving my lips.

“It’d be my pleasure to take someone as beautiful as you along with me, love,” he replies with the same big smile on his face as he stares at me. I can’t help but blush at his statement feeling my cheeks heat up. For the next ten minutes or so, we rattle off the most random questions to each other. I learned the boy loved cats, singing of course, going home to see his family and having downtime with the boys since they are so busy most of the time.

I soon glance up to see a sign for a place where they sell ICEE’s. Just thinking of them made me thirsty plus it’s been a while since I’ve had one. They are so good and I was really craving one.

“There’s an um… a place where they sell ICEE’s, you know like sno-cones? They are really good. Would you want one? Hope you don’t mind if I get one,” I tell him as I look over at him staring down at me. He had slipped his dark tinted sunglasses over his eyes.

I was tall but a bit on the shorter side standing at 5’6” while Harry seemed to tower over me. It didn’t bother me too much; at least he was taller than me instead of the other way around. Whoa, Avery, slow down there! Don’t get too attached too soon! I think to myself but am soon pulled out of my thoughts as Harry opened his mouth to speak, “Sure, I’d like one, we could um…share one i-if you like?” he asks as we get in line behind a few other people and wait.

“I guess so, but I’m so thirsty might as well just have my own,” I say with a slight laugh.

“Alright,” he says with a chuckle as we move up in the line.

A few people walked off with their treats. I was the next one in line so I decided to pull out my wallet. I am soon up to the counter and order myself a large strawberry ICEE and pay the girl who was standing by the counter. Once the girl hands my drink over, I take a step off to the side so I could wait for Harry. He soon gets his and pays the girl before we are back to walking and getting to know each other while we sip on our ICEE’s.

Next thing we know, Harry’s phone begins to go off. He pulls it out of his pocket and looks at the screen.

“What is it?” I ask as I look over at him setting my drink down on the bench we were sitting at.

“It’s just Liam, asking if we wanted to join them over by the games. What do you say?” he replies looking up from his phone. I give him a nod in return. It’s been quite a while since I’ve last played any of these games.

“Yeah, I’d like that, it would be fun!” I tell him with a smile as I pick up my ICEE and stand up from where we were sitting. Harry stands up and smiles holding on tightly to his ICEE. I soon grab him by the arm and lead him toward the many carnival games they had along the boardwalk. This is going to be fun.
