fourteen: lunch & beaches

I smile a bit when I notice we were getting closer to where we were meeting my parents in Santa Monica. Harry and I were meeting them, along with my brother, at some restaurant to eat. I was pretty hungry even though I ate not too long ago but that was before we left to the tattoo place. Before too long, I pull the car into the parking lot and begin to look for a spot. I soon find a spot and park the car in the lot we were meeting my parents and brother.

After I park the car, Harry and I both get out of the car. I put the keys in my bag after I shut the door and lock it. Just as I step on the sidewalk beside Harry, my phone begins to go off.

“That your mum?” he asks as I reach into my bag to retrieve my phone. I pull it from my bag and look at the screen. Sure enough, it was.

“It is,” I say with a smile as I answer it and hold it up to my ear.

“Hello?” I say into the speaker.

“Are you here yet? We’re sitting inside and waiting for you, and Harry,” she replies.

“We just got here, about to walk up to the front,” I tell her.

“Great, I’m waiting in the front, your dad and Jake are at the table,” she tells me.

“Alright, see you in a few,” I say before I press the end call button and lock my phone.

“Come on, Harry, they’re waiting for us inside,” I tell him as I begin to head up the walkway that led to the place we were at. He gives me a smile and continues his way up to the door. When I reach for the door, he beats me to it and pulls it open for me.

“Thanks,” I tell him with a smile.

“No problem, love,” he replies in his thick accent. I walk inside and look around for my mom. The place was crowded, as it always is, which wasn’t any surprise. It was a place where they had a variety of all kinds of foods, to try and appeal to everyone, I guess. I’ve been here a time or two with my family and it was pretty good.

“Avery!” I turn to see my mom standing there, in some khaki shorts, a shirt and running shoes, hair up in a ponytail.

“Hey mom,” I give her a smile and a hug.

“You remember Harry?” I question and motion to the tall boy beside me, who smiles at me and looks at my mom.

“I remember, Aves. How are you, Harry? Nice to see you again,” she says kindly and hugs him. He returns the hug and stands beside me, hand lightly brushing against my own. I shift my gaze down to try and keep myself from smiling.

“Hello. I’m grand, thanks, how about you?” he asks as we follow my mom toward where I’m guessing they found a table. “Nice to see you as well,” he smiles. I soon spot my dad and brother at a table, studying the menu.

“Pretty good, glad you could join us,” my mom smiles at Harry and turns to me. I smile a bit and notice him nod his head in return. As I approach the table, my dad and brother both look up. I am greeted with a hug from my dad and a kiss on the head.

“Hey, Jake,” I give him a hug and take a seat in one of the chairs. Harry takes a seat beside me.

“Hey..” he mumbles before going back to his phone. Typical Jake, always on his phone.

“Glad to be here,” Harry replies with a smile.

“So, I hear you went to the tattoo shop before you got here?” my mom asks, eyes raised a bit. Great! I think to myself. Here comes the questions… I look over at Harry and notice him nod his head, a small smile on his face as he begins to look at the menu in front of him. From the corner of my eye, I see Jake’s eyes light up when mom mentions ‘tattoos’.

“We did, both of us got one, actually,” he pipes up.

“What kind did you get?” Jake questions, looking at Harry, eyes wide in curiosity.

“I got some olive branches, or ferns,” he tells my brother who nods his head before glancing back down at his phone and playing some stupid game like he always is. He also mutters a “cool,” under his breath as I roll my eyes at his gesture.

“That’s annoying and rude, Jake; people are trying to converse here,” I mumble as I reach over and grab his phone and set it on the table top.

“Didn’t think I was being such a problem,” he mutters and puts his ear buds back in, loud rock music blaring from the speakers. I roll my eyes and turn back to my mom and Harry.

“Anyways, I got a dream catcher, on my side,” I respond with a smile and look at Harry. I notice him smile and laugh a bit.

“That’s cool, sweetie, show me later, alright?” my mom asks.

I nod my head and tell her I will before I turn to Harry who sat beside me. He was talking with my dad about something and they seemed to be getting along really well, which was awesome. For the mean time, I talk with my mom a bit as we wait for the waiter to come and take our drink orders.

Every so often, I catch Harry glance over at me from the corner of his eye and smile a bit, which made me smile in return. I know I ask myself this all the time when I’m around him but seriously, what is he doing to me? You like him, that’s why.. the voice in my head responds.

Pretty soon, a tall brunette girl is standing in front of the table. A notepad in her grip and a fake looking smile on her face as she twirled her French manicured nails through her too perfect hair. She was trying to get Harry’s attention; I know it and I couldn't help but snort in laughter. This girl, whoever she was looked stupid.

I order some water with a lemon wedge, while Harry gets root beer. Dad, Mom and Jake order their drinks, well just my mom, since she was waiting in the front for us. My dad and Jake get refills of whatever they got to drink. While we wait for our drinks, I sit and listen to Harry talk with my parents, and even Jake, a little bit. They all seemed to get along real well, which was real nice. I look down at my fingers intertwined in my lap to keep myself from bursting into a grin as he talks in his thick accent.

I grab a menu and begin to find what I want to eat. After I look at it for a minute or so longer, I finally decide on what I wanted, a salad with chicken and classic ranch dressing, which was great. We all give the girl our orders of what we wanted to eat and go back to conversing with each other once she walks off with our orders written down.

“What are your plans the rest of the day?” my mom asks as she looks at me.

“May go down to the beach for a bit, I guess, enjoy the day,” I tell her with a slight shrug of my shoulders and small smile that played on my lips. I turn to find a slight hint of a smile on Harry’s face and I notice him nod his head.

“Sounds like fun,” she replies with a smile.

For the next few minutes, I talk with Harry and we laugh at some things Jake was doing. He was quite a weird kid, even at fourteen years old. Quite annoying at times too but that was another story. We talk about a bunch of different things and have a good time. Just as the food arrives, Jake opens his mouth to speak.

“Can I get a tattoo sometime, mom?” he randomly asks.

I set my napkin in my lap and grab my fork to begin eating my salad. As those words leave his mouth, I can’t help but let a laugh pass my lips and I have to cover my mouth with my palm to keep myself from getting too out of hand. He was too much. I glance over and notice Harry smiling as he begins to eat the burger he ordered. I can’t help but smile at that; it sure seemed to me he was trying to keep himself from bursting out laughing.

“Uh, we’ll talk about that later, Jake, just enjoy your lunch,” she replies with a smile and laughs a bit.

“Fine,” he pouts and begins to chow down on what he ordered to eat, a cheeseburger with fries.

As we eat, I talk with Harry and my mom a bit but mostly Harry. She begins to ask him things, like where he’s from and things like that. We aren't even together and she already wants to know his life story. That’s my mom for you, always wanting to know things about everyone she meets.

Pretty soon, we finish up eating and my dad pays the bill. Now, we stood outside in the front, talking among one another.

“Want to go to the beach for a bit?” I ask as I look at Harry. He gives me a nod along with a smile.

“I’m down,” he smiles before turning to my mom.

“Thanks for lunch, was quite good,” he says with a polite smile. I smile a bit as I grab his arm and begin to make my way back to where I parked Claire’s car.

“You’re very welcome, you two have fun, be safe!” I hear my mom call out to us as we head to the car. My cheeks heat up and I can’t help but crack a smile at her words. I glance up only to be met with Harry smiling back at me. It was going to be a fun filled rest of the day. By the time we reach the car, that’s I realize I don’t have my swim suit.
