Angel Eyes
Chapter 1
The air was cool but not cold as I stepped off the bus and into the station. Gripping the handle to my scarlet suitcase tightly, I pushed through the glass doors and into the not so busy station where a couple families and lone passengers waited patiently for something.
I myself was waiting for my mother to come pick me up so she could take me home for the summer. I frowned at the thought of spending the summer at Hope Falls, Michigan, where little to nothing ever happened, but I didn't have much choice.
If it was up to me I'd be in New York City doing a journalism internship but I didn't get picked despite my hoping and praying almost every day.
Up until now, I had told myself that it wasn't so bad, that I'd find some form of adventure here in this small town, but now that I was actually here, a feeling of depression settled into my stomach.
At least I'd get to see my mother, but she owned a diner, and she'd probably be at work most days, leaving me by my lonesome. I had offered to work some shifts due to needing the pay and honestly...what else did I have to do?
Ten minutes turned into a half hour, and a half hour turned into an hour. Having waited long enough, I dialed my mother. She picked up after I called for the third time, "Hello? Kendall?" She asked.
"I arrived an hour ago," I said, trying not to sound whiny or irritated. "Where are you?"
"Oh!" She exclaimed. "I almost forgot! We're actually pretty busy today at the diner! I could've sworn you wouldn't be in for another couple of hours."
My insides churned with annoyance at having been forgotten by my own mother, "Well, can you come pick me up? I don't have enough cash for a cab." I probably did, but I didn't want to spend it. And forgive my sense of entitlement, but I felt it only fair for my mom to pay it after she forgot me.
"I can call you a Lyft," She said. "It should be there in twenty minutes. Think you can wait for a little while longer?"
What choice do I have? I thought bitterly, but pushed it down. "Sure."
Not waiting for a reply, I hung up the phone and crossed my arms, leaning back against the green bench I sat on.
Twenty minutes passed and I got an alert from my phone letting me know that my Lyft was there. With an angry sigh I pulled my suitcase outside and saw a small red car. The driver was a white girl with curly blonde hair wearing a pink flannel shirt and jeans.
Opening the backseat, I flung my suitcase inside and heard an angry "Ow!" My eyes widened in surprise and looking across the seat, there was a guy.
