Safe Haven

Moving Day

Three words, twelve letters, and something no teenager ever wants to hear: Back to school.
Normally I would cringe after hearing those words, but not today. Now that I am officially a college student I’m actually pretty excited. Sick of the love-hate relationship I have with my tourist infested hometown, I couldn’t be any more anxious to get away from here. Being offered the opportunity to escape from Florida’s sandy shores and head upstate for post-secondary school is probably the best thing that has ever happened to me. The only downside is being apart from my best friend Savannah and my mom (who claims that she’ll miss me but is probably stoked about me leaving; I can be quite the handful - even as an only child).

“Autumn? You ready to go? The car’s all loaded up.”

“Yeah, mom just a second.” She went to the car without a word, giving me some much needed alone time to say goodbye to my room.
Goodbye comfy bed that held me when I felt alone and comforted me when I was tired. Goodbye dresser that was once overflowing with various clothing items I never wanted to give away and the stash of money I saved up to buy my crappy car. Goodbye old memories – good and bad. It’s time for new goals and new adventures.

The car ride to the airport was full of laughter and shared memories and arriving at the terminal was filled with tears, but I had finally made it to Columbia University in New York after an exhausting flight and I couldn’t be any happier. Things were looking up and I could finally put my ten-year plan into action. I unpacked as soon as I got to my dorm and made sure I left plenty of room for my roommate who would be arriving next week.

Apparently there was some mandatory orientation for the freshman in the student union at 5, but since it was only 4 I decided to head out and find a decent coffee shop to pass some time. Grabbing my phone, keys, leather jacket, and purse I headed straight towards the nearest Starbucks because I didn’t trust anything that claimed they had the ‘Best coffee in the world’.

By the time I found it, it was already 4:30 and I was in a rush. “Grande caramel macchiato please.”

“What?” stated the petite blonde across the counter; clearly hung over or high or something.

“Grande. Caramel. Macchiato. Please.”

“K”

15 minutes later I *finally* got my drink and it was now 4:45 and I was officially going to be late. Just my luck.

Attempting to run out of the double doors and begin my journey to the union I tripped over my own foot, stumbled, and fell on top of a complete stranger – spilling my burning hot coffee all over his white shirt.
“Are ya effin kiddin me?!”

“Sorry – I- uh….sorry? Ohmygosh it’s all over your shirt. Are you ok?”

“No it fuckin burns! Will ya watch where yer going next time please?”

“Yeah. S-sorry. I’m sorry.”

“You said that already. Now canya get off?”

I scrambled to get up and threw my coffee cup in the trash. Turning around to apologize one more time before leaving I finally took a good look at him. Starting with his dirty blonde hair, I worked my way to his bright blue eyes, perfect lips, and slightly defined torso. The coffee-stained material sticking to his abs and his jeans almost as tight as mine.
“Whenever yer done starin at my body you can go.”

The light brown skin on my face turned a bright shade of red and I quickly made an exit.
First day and I’ve already made a complete fool of myself at the first sight of a hot guy. This is not what I planned.
