Unattainable

Chapter One

"Look...I'm sorry, okay?" I say, half annoyed.
"I seriously hate you right now," Casey retorted nonchalantly.
"And I seriously love you."
"You should have told me."
"I didn't tell anyone! I wanted to make sure I got the job before I said anything. I don't know why you're making this such a big deal."
"I'm not making anything a big deal, Audrey. It's not every day your best friend gets a contract with CoverGirl and keeps it from you."
"Not like you tell me everything that's going on in your life."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Casey said, crossing her arms.
"Nothing. Can we just stop making a scene in the middle of the street? How about I buy you something from that place you love?"
"Now that sounds like healthy communication to me." She giggled.
We continued walking down the streets of LA to 'Café Bistro'. I personally found the name to be too much of an oxymoron to like, but Casey loved it. Casey and I are polar opposites yet we mesh so well... most of the time. She had been my best friend since preschool. She was always the outgoing, adventurous type while I was the quiet, indoor one. We complimented each other - while she brought me out of my shell, I helped her turn it down a notch.
After high school, we both packed our bags and moved out to LA. To say my lifelong dream was to be a model would be an understatement. It seems cliché and probably stupid, but I was never one to give up easily just because the odds of me making it were slim to none. Every girl wants to be a model and almost all of them are faced with the harsh reality that to make it big you need to not only know people, but to also know people who knew people. I do not know anyone except for my uncle who also happens to be my manager. He's a new, up and coming person in LA but I took what I could get... and afford.
Somehow, he got me the audition with CoverGirl. It's a two-year contract that they could end at any moment, but anything was better than nothing. Casey and I have been in this town for almost three years and all I had to show for it was a bunch of small time ads at the bottom of magazines that no one looks at. Casey on the other hand was doing well for herself. She got her dream job at Cosmopolitan Magazine and became one of their 'most promising' journalists. I was super proud of her, but sometimes she could rub her success in my face.
We arrived at the paradoxical Café Bistro and pushed open the doors that held the sign 'PULL' on it. Another feature Casey loves about the place. The café wasn't too big or snug. It was cabin style and had five two-seat tables which were always occupied so you could never sit by yourself, let alone a company of three. Light bulbs hung from the ceiling just low enough that all the excessive light became bothersome, to say the least. As we entered, I felt the wind knocked out of me as Casey backhanded me in the stomach.
"What the fu" I started.
"It's... it's..." she stuttered.
"What?"
"One. Direction."
Five- guy British boyband One Direction. I know everything there is to know about them and not on my own accord. I couldn't care less if one of them had an unreasonable fear of spoons. Or another was nicknamed the 'Bradford Bad Boy'. Casey was obsessed; beyond that, actually. I tried to listen to some of their songs, for her sake, but they were just too...pop. I believe her phone wallpaper at the time was one of them. Or all. I personally did not like to feed into her obsession, but with her birthday coming up, I tried to get her tickets for a concert they were having in town. Obviously, it sold out in minutes and I barely walked away with my pride. The concert was more than four months away. Why the fuck was it sold out already. I never understood the hype around them. They did not even place first on the X Factor. Needless to say, they were probably the most famous boyband and music group in the industry.
I followed Casey's gaze to the front counter. There stood three guys who I would admit were quite good looking. The blonde one was ordering something while the other two seemed to be impatiently waiting. I took a few steps forward only to be pulled back. Casey again. I swear I would need to put out a restraining order against her. Behind her eyes I could see the excitement and fear she was experiencing. I laughed at her, to myself, then pulled her forward reminding her why we even came in here. As we got closer, I could hear them speaking. I almost forgot they were British...and Irish.
"Hurry up, Niall. Someone might see us," I heard the chestnut haired one say.
"You can't rush choosing the perfect donut," the blonde one, named Niall responded.
"Harry and Louis aren't even back from the loo as yet. How long does it really take to piss?" the dark haired one said.
"You know I have a...problem, Zayn," a deep accented voice said coming up behind me.
"Oh my God," whispered Casey, barely holding herself up. I turned around to find the face to the voice and there he was; Harry Styles. I only know his name because well, he's Harry Styles. Even I am not that deaf to celebrity gossip; and he is also Casey's favourite so needless to say, she talks about him the most. Trailing behind him was another one. His voice was much higher than the rest.
"The only 'problem' you have, Harry, is not being able to stop touching your hair long enough to unzip your pants," he said. All the guys laughed, except Harry of course and I also found myself giggling. The dark haired one turned around and looked at me. He gave me a warm smile that made his brown eyes sparkle, then pulled out his phone and looked away. Unsure how I felt about that brief, awkward moment we shared, I turned to Casey to make sure she was fine. Never before had I seen her this speechless. It was hard for me not to make fun of her but, I knew the earful I would have gotten when we got back to our apartment.
"Come on, Niall," one of them said. I took this as my opportunity to help Casey.
"The donuts here aren't all that great," I started, letting go of a nervous Casey's arm. I stepped forward to the counter next to the one they called Niall and scanned the assortment of pastries still available. "Their croissants are to die for, but my personal favourite is their pizza cups. Your pick."
"Well you could never go wrong with pizza, right?" he said smiling down at me.
"Right," I smiled back.
"Five pizza rolls, please," he said to the cashier. "You guys don't want any, right?"
I laughed and stepped away from the counter to reassume my position next to Casey who was staring at me in disbelief. The other four guys stood awkwardly, smiling at and looking away from me nervously. The dark haired one gazes lasted longer than the others. Eventually I smiled at him and he looked surprised. He smiled then turned away. I giggled at his shyness and returned my focus to Niall.
"All done. Thanks for your help, umm, sorry. I didn't get your name," he said.
"Audrey," I smiled.
"Hi Audrey. I'm Niall. This is Zayn, Louis, Liam and Harry." I heard a whimper next to me. I almost forgot Casey was with me. They all half raised their hand, half waved as Niall said their names. Judging by their faces I could tell why she loved them so much. They were a handsome bunch and so far, I knew at least one of them were friendly while the others were pleasant enough. The shy one was Zayn, which I should have figured with all that Casey told me about him.
"Oh, this is my friend, Casey," I said, slightly pushing her forward.
"Hey," she squeaked.
"There it is," the one called Louis laughed.
"There what is?" I asked, puzzled.
"Two young, pretty girls? At least one of you must have known who we are. And by that response, I'm guessing it's Casey over here."
"Oh, you think we're pretty?" I responded sarcastically. I received some chuckles and a hearty laugh from Niall.
"Drop dead gorgeous, love," Louis retorted.
"Well don't go dying on us yet. You wouldn't want to make some more young, pretty girls upset now, would you?"
"Audrey..." Casey urged. Again I forgot she was there. It was so strange her being quiet. But she was right, I should hold my tongue. Last thing I need is to make an enemy of one-fifth of One Direction. I rolled my eyes subconsciously. Being in this town, in this industry, takes something from you.
"Why are you rolling your eyes?" the one called Liam asked.
"Me? No reason. Just thought about something. Anyway, you guys might have a lot of free time, but we gotta go." I said starting to turn mute Casey around.
"Bored of us already?" Harry Styles inquired, following behind us. Liam got to the door first and held it open for us. A gentleman, just like Casey said. It was amazing how much she described them to a T without even meeting them or seeing them in person. However, she would argue that she did indeed see them once. In the airport. On the far side of the room. Surrounded by thousands of fans and paparazzi. But yeah... she saw them.
"I wouldn't say bored. But I wouldn't not say it either," I smirked.
"Feisty," Louis laughed. "I like this one."
"Gee, thanks. I could finally cross that off my bucket list."
"Damn, girl," Niall mumbled through bites of his pizza cup.
"All jokes aside, and not to be rude or anything, but are you guys gonna follow us the entire way?"
They had literally followed us two blocks from the café. I knew Casey was probably mentally cursing me out for being what she would consider rude just because of who they were, but it was weird them just trailing behind us. They were cute and all, but that still did not change the fact that we did not know them. I was not even sure where Casey and I were going, but I sure as hell knew I did not want them knowing where we lived. And the last thing I wanted was for someone to spot them and we ended up in a fangirl frenzy.
"Honestly, we're bored," Liam said. "You're the most entertaining person we've come across for the day."
"He speaks the truth. Don't let it go to your head though," Louis interjected.
"And there isn't much we can do or places we can go without risking being seen," Niall added.
"You do NOT want to be in the middle of one of our fan mobs," Harry said, slightly unnerved.
I looked over at Zayn, still he had nothing to say, nor did he look at me. I looked away and stopped in my tracks. This is probably Casey's only chance at spending time with them and who knows, maybe I could get her some tickets. So why not?
"Well what do you want to do?" I asked.
