Only You

Chapter 58

It was a week later when Adele bolted into the study room excitedly searching for her friends. She was clutching her phone in her hand as If it held a vital life source and she wore a grin that practically took up her entire face. Eleanor and I were the only other people in there at the time and after such an arrival we were curious as to what was going on.

“Adele?” Eleanor asked after her as the plump girl turned to leave. Adele turned back to face my friend with a smile and walked back toward us.

“Hey El!” She said brightly before glancing over at me. Her eyes narrowed slightly and the smile dropped for just a second. That had been happening a lot since I had been dating Harry. The girls I was never friends with who were more popular than me despised me because they thought I had taken something from them. The girls I was in the same social circles with now hated me because they were jealous… Adele was one of these girls. El was the only girl who was wholeheartedly happy for me and Harry. I just smiled back brightly at her, pretending not to notice as she ignored me and went back to Eleanor.

“What’s going on, you look like you’re going to explode with excitement?” Eleanor leant forward on the desk showing her interest. Adele was about to answer when Harry and Louis walked into the room, shoving one another and just generally acting like children as usual.

“It’s a brand new suit Lou!” Harry hissed as he tugged at the sleeve collar, inspecting it, and then threw a swift dig at Louis’ arm.

“Oi!” Louis gasped as he grabbed his arm in pain, “No need to get violent! I said I was sorry! Next time, don’t steal my pudding!” he added as the door closed behind them. They continued their bickering as they came over to our table. Adele’s eyes were wide as they came closer, and they looked as though they would actually fall out of her head when Harry came and stood next to her. He glanced down at the small, curvy girl and flashed her a friendly smile.

“Hey! Adele, right?” he said with a nod in her direction. Adele nodded with her mouth wide open as she gawked up at him.

“Yeah and you… you’re… you’re uhm Harry…” She said quietly, a blush rising slowly on her cheeks. Harry didn’t seem to notice how nervous and fidgety the girl had just gotten as he smiled and then looked over at me. Adele’s eyes followed his and a scowl flashed across her features.

“Hey you.” He said with a wink. I giggled and rolled my eyes at him.

“Hey.” I replied. I could practically see Adele turning green with envy as she watched our exchange.

“So Adele… You were telling us why you’re so excited?” Eleanor said sweetly, although I could tell by her tone that she had seen the daggers that had been sent my way and was now only being polite for information.

“Oh yeah…” Adele said, her eyes flicking back to Harry as he turned to lean against the table while he listened to what she had to say.

“I got my last offer in for all my university applications!” She said with a wide grin.

“That’s great! Congrats!” Louis said with a smile, as the sentiment echoed from all of us. She seemed surprised when I congratulated her despite how unpleasant she was being, but I had no reason not to be nice. Getting all of her offers in was a great achievement, and she should be proud.

“Thanks… I guess I’ll go find Justin and Demi…” She glanced around the table once more until her eyes settled on Harry. He smiled again, but this time I could see the hint of awkwardness as he waited for her to leave.

“Bye Harry…” She said in a low voice before turning and walking out the door. Harry shifted uncomfortably in her seat until she was through the door before standing upright and facing the rest of us.

“Well, that was weird.” He said, turning his nose up slightly before taking the seat opposite mine.

“Have you guys got all your offers in yet?” Louis asked as he passed a bright red apple that he had taken from the dining hall across the table to Eleanor. She shook her head as she took a bite and a small drop of juice ran down the side of her finger. Louis turned to Harry who shook his head, and then all eyes were on me.

“I have four out of five in.” I said with a sheepish smile. I had been keeping my university offers to myself and was planning on really only telling people once I had confirmed my first choice. Everyone knew where I wanted to go anyway, so I wasn’t really even that bothered about the other’s that I’d chosen.

“You do?” Harry asked, looking a little offended that I hadn’t said anything.

“Yeah… I’m still waiting on Durham though, so I didn’t really think much of it, you know?” I said in an attempt to make it seem as though it wasn’t a big deal. Harry nodded but I could tell from his eyes that he was hurt that I hadn’t even mentioned it. The silence grew uncomfortable as Harry didn’t say speak.

“So, what about you Lou?” I asked quickly, trying to draw the attention off of me and the fact that I hadn’t told Harry about my offers. Louis sat back in his chair with a grin.

“Decided not to even apply,” He said with a shrug and then his eyes wandered over to the pretty brunette opposite him, “Going to work with my uncle in London to be near El.”
Eleanor blushed at his words and reached across the table to take his hand in her free one before taking another bite of her apple. I tried to smile at their cute moment, but I was distracted by the feeling of my skin tingling under Harry’s stare. I glanced over at him and saw that he was clearly making a big deal out of this in his head. His eyes met mine for a second before he looked down at his hands, withdrawing himself from the conversation. His face was stony and I could tell that he had no intention of forgiving me quickly.

I found myself glad when the bell went, calling Harry off to history and away from me. He stood without a word, not even bothering to look over his shoulder as he left the room.

“Why is he so mad at me?” I asked Louis once the door had shut fully and it was just the three of us.

“I don’t know, he’s just being a moody prat today S… I wouldn’t think too much into it.” He said with a sympathetic smile. I nodded, but kept my eyes on the door, as if I expected him to come back through them and apologise.

“Meet him by his car later and ask?” Eleanor said when they noticed that I clearly had not let it go.

“Yeah…” I nodded finally pulling my eyes to the English Lit book sitting in front of me, “Yeah, I’ll do that…”

I spent the next forty five minutes pretending to read my book, when really I was just thinking about Harry. Time seemed to move slower than usual when I knew he was angry with me over something, so when it finally reached ten to four, I was out the door in seconds, bolting toward my car. I knew Harry had another ten minutes before his lesson even finished but I wanted to make sure he couldn’t slip off without me knowing.

Ten minutes passed a lot quicker now that I was standing at the car. Just as I had expected he came out within seconds of the bell, walking at double pace toward his car with his face still emotionless. He slowed down when he spotted me standing behind his car: there was no need to rush when the person he was running from had already caught up with him. He reached the car and didn’t say a word as I stepped aside and he popped open the boot. He threw his bag in and then walked round to the front of the car and got in the driver’s seat. Without hesitation I opened the passenger door and got into the car.

“Harry…” I said gently as he stared blankly at the wall in front of him.

“Am I giving you a lift home?” He asked bluntly. I was a little shocked by his hard tone.

“No, I –“ He interrupted me as I tried to speak.

“Well, can you get out then, I’m in a rush.” He said in the same icy tone. I instantly felt the anger bubbling in me as he turned the car on. When I didn’t move, he looked at me coldly before speaking again.

“Get out, S.”

“No!” I snapped suddenly, “No! I’m not getting out! You’re going to turn the car off and we’re going to have an actual conversation about why you’re so bloody pissed off!”

“You know why, now get out!” I could tell from the way his knuckles were going white as he clenched his fist that his anger was rising to match my own.

“For fuck’s sake Harry! I was going to tell you when the alert from Durham came in! I don’t even care about the others!” I yelled, throwing my hands in the air in desperation for him to see sense. He turned to me, a familiar fire in his narrowed eyes.

“Yeah, well maybe I fucking care!” He hissed. I was taken aback by this.

“What? Why? Why would you care about it when I’m not even bothered?” I screwed my nose up in confusion and shook my head.

“Whatever Selena. If you don’t get it then there’s no point having this fucking talk, get out.” He snapped as he turned to face the front, clearly deciding to just ignore me again.

“You are being such a child about this! So, I didn’t tell the guy I’m dating I –“ I started, but Harry cut me off again. He hit the steering wheel with the palms of his hands in anger as I ignited round two of his fury.

“You think that’s why I’m bothered?” He hissed as my phone buzzed in my hand, “Because we’re dating? Not possible that it would matter to me because you’re my best friend?”

I rolled my eyes, still not understanding why he was making such a big deal out of this as I looked down at the notification banner on my screen. It was an email, from Durham. My eyes went wide and my anger instantly subsided, replaced with excitement. This was it. This was the email I had been waiting for. I wasn’t listening to Harry as he ranted on about why he was upset with me, I was too busy dealing with this. I clicked on the email with shaking hands.

Dear Miss Gomez,

Thank you for your application to The University of Durham to read Music.

We have now carefully considered all the information in your file, and assessed it in the context of this year’s field of applicants as a whole. I am sorry to say that we are not able to make you an offer of a place at this time. This year the number of well-qualified candidates was once again far in excess of the number of places we had available. We have not been able to make offers to many other able and impressive applicants.

I know that this will come as very disappointing news. I trust, however, that you will continue to take pride in your academic achievements, and that you will in due course obtain a good place at University.

With my best wishes,

Dr Carmen Jones
Tutor for Admissions

I felt my body go cold as I read over the words, and then again to make sure that I had read them right.

“They rejected me…” The words tasted sour in my mouth as I croaked them out in a voice that sounded a million miles away, interrupting his monologue.

“What?” He breathed, his anger dissipated as quickly as mine had and furrowed his brow at me.

“I didn’t get in.” I said in a voice barely louder than a whisper, scared that if I heard the words I would lose the last ounce of control I had. I got out of the car without another word, suddenly feeling as though the walls were closing in on me. I walked to the back of the car slowly, unsure of what to do with myself.

“S, baby, it’s okay, come here.” I could hear Harry’s voice next to me as he took a step closer. I looked up at him and felt as the hot tears that were stinging my eyes spilled over my lashes. He put his hand on my arm to pull me into him but I stepped out of his reach.

“No! It’s not okay! This is not okay!” I snapped as the white hot lump in my throat started to choke me.

He didn’t say a word as he moved closer making me even angrier. I didn’t want to be near him. I lashed out and pushed him, wanting him to get away from me, but instead he stood strong and didn’t move. I pushed him again.

“Fuck off! Just leave me alone! Get in your stupid fucking car and just leave me alone!” I yelled through my tears as they came hard and fast. He didn’t move. I pushed him one more time, and when he didn’t move, my fists went to beating on his chest in frustration. He caught my wrists gently in his hands and stopped them from hitting him as I cried. Seconds later, he was hugging me tightly into his chest and whispering into my hair. I resisted for a moment before sinking into him and letting every bit of hurt and disappointment that I had out. My legs gave way beneath me as I cried, and if it hadn’t been for Harry’s arms I would have fallen to the floor.

We stayed like that until I had no more tears left to cry. Until all the cars had gone. Until I had time to process that my dream had just crumbled in the palm of my hand.

@Bunnyboo
Thank you so much for reading! Writing is my dream and I am obsessed with these characters and their stories so it's so important to me that it is told the right way... At the time when I started writing this it was a distraction because I was in a tough situation and I needed something to take my mind off of it. Now, I am in such a good place and I can see that this story hasn't been written the way that it should have been - the way I want it to be read and I don't want to spoil the ending on a sub-par version. Thank you for being so patient, I appreciate it so much and I hope that I do their story justice in my retelling.
