Only You

Chapter 40

The only thing that we had to worry about during the last two weeks of school were our mock exams that were supposedly going to predict our final grades for the year. I'm not going to pretend that I didn't worry excessively about these exams, because I did... so much so that I boosted my study time for the last two weeks and only saw Jared twice a week for an hour, just to catch up, otherwise my head was in a book and it was all I could think about.

The exams were going to be spread over the last three days of term and they came around quicker than I expected.

"S, stop worrying, they aren't even real exams." Harry laughed as I frantically read through my English literature notes convinced that I knew nothing about Macbeth and that I was going to fail miserably.

"These are the indicators of how well were going to do in our actual exams Harry! They are everything." I hissed without looking up. He reached out and took the book from my hand, closed it and put it under his arm before resting his hands lightly on my shoulders and smiling at me.

"S, you are the smartest girl here by a mile, you know the stuff so calm down... you'll do better in a relaxed state of mind." He said soothingly, looking me in the eyes encouragingly. I looked up at him, his green eyes swimming with pride and instantly knew that he meant every word he said. I leaned in for a small but reassuring hug and took a deep breath knowing that he was right.

"Thank god thats over." Harry said as we collected our belongings from outside the hall and began walking back toward the carpark, "So ready for a break!"

"Yeah, definitely!" I laughed in agreement at his exaggerated outstretched arms, embracing the freedom of the end of our last mocks, "So, what did you think of the questions?" He looked at me with a playful scowl as I spoke.

"Nope. No more exam talk, I failed and we both know it, so all I want to think about now is going home and getting ready for us to go skiing tomorrow!" he said poking a finger into my side with a chuckle. I squealed and jumped away from him in surprise as he turned back and winked. We laughed and teased each other playfully until we reached our cars, parked in their usual spots next to one another. I was calming my laughter as I turned to see that Harry was looking at me with a small smile.

"What you smiling about?" I asked returning the smile, expecting him to tell me that he was thinking about how good skiing was going to be tomorrow. He didn't answer immediately and took a step closer, instantly making the hairs on the back of my neck prickle and goosebumps cover my arms as he held my gaze.

"Only you." He said in a hushed voice, reaching up slowly and pushing a hair that had fallen down from my messy bun back into place. He smiled and lowered his hand to behind my neck, his eyes never breaking contact with my own, reading them intently as his thumb brushed gently from my jawbone to my neck slowly. Was he about to try and do what I thought he was about to do?

"Harry..." I said, quietly protesting his actions and breaking eye contact with him for a second. When I looked back up he smiled wider and took a step back, removing his hand from my neck.

"Your eyes dilated when you thought I was going to kiss you, you know..." He said quietly with a small but triumphant smile.

"I knew you weren't going to kiss me." I lied casually, "You said I had to make the first move." I shut my boot and turned to face him fully, expecting him to concede. Instead his smile didn't even falter slightly.

"And you nearly did." He said simply as he walked round to driver's side of the car, looking over the roof he flashed me one more perfect smile before adding, "See you tomorrow, S!" before getting into the car and driving away before I could even think of anything else to say.
"Suitcase is upstairs in my room, can you also grab my purple rucksack please!" I said to Jared as he came through my door later on the Friday evening to pick me up. Even though we weren't flying to France until the Saturday, we decided that it would be better for me to come and stay at his the night before since we had such an early start and my house was in the opposite direction. He greeted my mum with a quick polite nod before running up to my room to do as he was asked. I turned back to face the worried woman standing in front of me.

"Mum, I will be fine, it's only a week and you have at least three numbers to call if you're concerned about anything!" I said with a small chuckle. She reached out and ran her hands over my shoulders, down my arms and then gripped my hands tightly.

"I know, I know... I'm just worried that there won't be any adults... what if something happens? You'll be-" I cut her off by cupping her face gently between my hands.

"Jensen is twenty five, he is a mature and responsible adult, and nothing is going to happen so there is nothing to worry about!" I said soothingly. Her brow was still furrowed with her anxiety as I leaned in and gently kissed her on the nose like she used to do when I was worried when I was younger. She tried her best to smile at my gesture, but like any parent she was anxious about her eighteen year old daughter going abroad alone.

"Okay sweetheart... just please be safe and sensible... do you have everything? Passport? Tickets? Money? Emergency debit cards?" She continued reeling off her list of everything as Jared came down the stairs behind her. I took the rucksack from him and held it up for my mother.

"Yes mum, I promise everything will be fine, please stop worrying." She nodded fearfully and looked up at Jared who had come back from taking the large suitcase out to the car and was standing next to me, his hand resting on the small of my back.

"Don't worry, I promise I'll look after her, I always do." He said, beaming at her with a comforting smile. She nodded gratefully, took a deep breath and smiled as calmly as she could.

"Have fun, both of you!" She said pulling me in for a tight hug. I smiled into her shoulder and hugged her back tightly. She pulled out of the hug after a few seconds and squeezed my shoulders one last time before turning to Jared again and pulling him down into a quick hug too. I loved how well he and my mother got along. It mattered a lot to me that she loved anyone who I decided to allow into our little family since my dad leaving us had made us a lot closer than just mother and daughter... she was one of my best friends. Jared was finally released from her embrace and we were finally out the door and walking down the path when suddenly my mum's voice came loudly behind us.

"Wait! You forgot something!" She called out the door and down the small path. We turned to her confused as she tossed a small box in our direction which Jared caught. He inspected the item and suddenly began to flush red as an embarrassed smile spread across his face and he chuckled nervously.

"Thanks Mandy... Can never be too prepared..." He said as he laughed with a small eye roll. I reached up and took the box from him. As soon as I saw what they were I looked back at her mortified as she smiled and winked at me.

"As cute as they would be, no grandbabies just yet please!" She said with a giggle and closed the door. As much as she knew how to be my best friend, Mandy Gomez was definitely still amazing at being my typical embarrassing mother who threw condoms out the door at me and my boyfriend.

@Bunnyboo
Thank you so much for reading! Writing is my dream and I am obsessed with these characters and their stories so it's so important to me that it is told the right way... At the time when I started writing this it was a distraction because I was in a tough situation and I needed something to take my mind off of it. Now, I am in such a good place and I can see that this story hasn't been written the way that it should have been - the way I want it to be read and I don't want to spoil the ending on a sub-par version. Thank you for being so patient, I appreciate it so much and I hope that I do their story justice in my retelling.
