Only You

Chapter 27

I watched as Louis leaned in close to Eleanor to speak to her over the loud music in the bar and rolled my eyes. After an awkward first ten minutes, during which he hadn't stopped staring at her as though she was a priceless work of art, he had finally found his confidence and was actually able to talk to her. I looked at Eleanor as I thought about how Louis had acted around her. She was really pretty, brunette hair and warm brown eyes, she looked sweet. After watching them together all evening, I had decided that she would be good for Louis.

"Harry?" Selena waved her hand infront of my face and I realised I had been staring. I blinked and looked down at her. She smiled as she offered me one of the shots that she had brought over, I took it, clinked it to hers and then threw it back not even bothering to see what it was beforehand. The anise flavour burned my throat and I felt my face screw up in disgust, I hated sambuca, but I couldn't help but smile when I heard the ring of her laugh above the rest of the noise. I opened my eyes and drank in the sight of her head thrown back, smiling big and bright and wondered if Jared ever made her laugh like that. The tipsy part of me hoped that I was the only one who did that to her. Once she had calmed down, she looked over at Louis and Eleanor and then moved closer to speak to me again, "They look so sweet, don't they?"

"Yeah, I think she'd be good for him..." I said as we looked on at them.

"She's so nice! What about you? See anyone you like?" She said with a playful nudge as she raised an eyebrow and took a sip of her drink. I forced a smile and shook my head. I was lying. I saw exactly what I wanted and I couldn't have it which only made me want it more. I had secretly allowed myself, as the alcohol had loosened up my mind, to imagine what it would be like to be here with Selena in the same way that Louis was here with Eleanor. That every time I spoke to her she was thinking about me the same way that I thought about her. I took another gulp of my beer, pushed the thoughts from my mind for at least the fifth time tonight and decided that this was going to be my last drink. I didn't want to get drunk with her and then let something slip. She shrugged and rolled her eyes, clearly unimpressed at my lack of interest in the girls around the room, "I'm getting another drink, do you want anything?" I smiled and shook my head, holding up my half drunk beer wishing for the sixth time that she was mine. Not drinking anymore would definitely be a wise decision I confirmed as she walked away.

It was now nearing eleven, and I was the only sober one. Louis was sitting next to me in a booth that we had managed to claim while Eleanor and Selena were off dancing at the edge of the crowd where we could see them. After taking a sip of his drink Louis turned to me and leaned closer to speak.

"Isn't she great? Look at her dancing, my god, I want her Haz!" He was slurring his words a little but I was glad he had had a good night. I laughed and rolled my eyes with a nod. I knew I hadn't been watching Eleanor at all though, Selena had my eyes all to herself. I watched as she moved her hips in time to the music, mouthing the words to Eleanor and grinning from ear to ear. I loved watching her have so much fun. "Stop thinking about Selena." He added as he pat me on the back sympathetically. Even when he was drunk he was so in tune to other people it was scary.

"I'm not!" I lied with a shrug, purposefully looking anywhere but at the girls as I sipped my diet coke.

"Sure you weren't." Louis rolled his eyes and sat back, taking another sip of his drink. The song ended and the girls stumbled back over to the booth, laughing hysterically as they did. Eleanor moved to Louis' side and sat down next to him. He put his arm around her and with a cheeky look at Selena, she turned her head up to his and pulled his lips down to meet her own. I looked at Selena questioningly as she slid in clumsily next to me.

"I told her to just go for it!" She slurred throwing a glance in their direction, "Louis can thank me on Monday." I laughed as she flicked her hair over her shoulder in mock approval of herself. We talked for a few minutes while Louis and Eleanor made out on the other side of the table, until he reached out tapped me on the shoulder.

"Come up for air finally?" I asked jokingly as he leaned in.

"Fuck off! You guys ready to go? El wants chips!" He shouted over the song. I looked at Selena and could see that she was bobbing her head lazily to the music, clearly the alcohol was beginning to really hit her. I nudged her and made a gesture to symbolise eating to which she nodded enthusiastically. Louis and Eleanor slid out of the booth and began walking to the door, his hand in hers as she walked ahead. Selena slid out of the booth slowly as I followed close behind. As her bum left the seat she seemed to lose her footing and would have fallen if I hadn't caught her arm and pulled her into me as I stood up. She looked up at me with a drunken giggle and wound both arms around my waist.

"My hero!" she said slowly as a grin spread across her face. I rolled my eyes as I smiled back allowing myself to enjoy her closeness, she was kind of cute when she was drunk.

"Come on you, let's get some chips to soak up the Vodka." I laughed and keeping one arm around my waist, we left. With my arm over her shoulder I suddenly felt a pang of momentary sadness as I reminded myself that she only saw me as a friend.
"Get the taxi to Jared's with her, Haz, you can't put her in a taxi alone like that! He'd be fuming!" Louis said as we looked down at Selena who was still leaning against my side. I could tell from the pressure that she was putting on my side that she was no longer holding herself up and that I was supporting her body weight as she laughed at something El had whispered to her. The guy called out Selena's order, which Louis took from the counter and handed over to me to hold. We said goodbye and I guided Selena out of the take away into the street to look for the taxi we had called her fifteen minutes earlier. I opened the car door helped her in and then went to close the door and get in the front but Selena protested.

"No! Don't leave me all alone in the back!" She squealed with a laugh and held out her chips, "I will tempt you with potatoey goodness, Harold! I know you want them!" I rolled my eyes with a smile, she really was the cutest thing.

"Move up then!" I said with a chuckle. She slid over to the middle seat to let me sit down but once I had closed the door she moved back closer to me and lifted my arm to put it over her shoulder.

"I had such a good night, El and Lou are so cute!" She said as she offered her chips toward me. I grinned and took one as she continued, "I think they'll be fun to go on a double date with!"

"Yeah, it was good! Wouldn't be hard for them to be better than me and Taylor." I said, and instantly regretted it. Clearly I should not have mentioned Taylor, as she pouted slightly and her bottom lip began to quiver. I squeezed her gently, "Hey, you've had a good night, no crying!"

"She hates me!" Selena whispered as a small tear dropped over her lashes. I stroked her arm gently, willing her with all my might, to stop crying.

"She doesn't hate you! She's just mad at you because she's delusional thinking that you want me, when were just friends! This whole thing is on her, you've done nothing wrong, you have Jared!" It hurt me to admit it, but I would have said anything to cheer her up at this point. I had realised last Monday when I had caught her crying in the study room that seeing Selena cry actually felt as though someone was taking a knife to my heart.

"Exactly!" She exclaimed suddenly, pulling herself out of my arm and sitting up straight. She turned to look at me and continued her defence, "I mean, I know I only went out with Jared originally to get my mind off of you, but I love him now, it took me so long to get in a position where I could be happy for you guys!" she slurred and then turned back stormily to her chips.

I was frozen to the seat feeling my heart beating so hard I thought it was going to explode from my chest, her words ringing in my ears. I tried to say something but I couldn't think of anything to say, I was too shocked. She had liked me. Selena had fucking liked me. I was torn between allowing myself to revel in the fact that Jared was not her first choice and kicking myself for allowing her to fall in love with him while I had been frolicking around with the wrong girl. Selena leaned back onto my chest as she carried on eating, clearly too drunk to realise what she had just admitted to me. We spent the rest of the journey in silence, her just laying on my chest, and it was only once we got to Jared's that I realised she had fallen asleep. The taxi pulled up at the gate and apologised as we realised I would have to carry her up the drive since neither of us had a clicker to open it and the call button was broken.

I gently moved the half eaten chips container from her lap and out onto the pavement before leaning in and pulling Selena's arms around my neck and sliding my hands beneath her back and legs to list her from the car. She was breathing softly as I began carrying her up the path effortlessly, glad that she was so small. I loved the feeling of her head in the crook of my neck, it felt so natural, like this was how it was meant to be. Maybe one day this is how it would be... maybe one day she'd like me again and I wouldn't be stupid enough to let it pass me by.

"Taylor isn't completely delusional, you know." I whispered to her as she slept, "I do really like you, but I promise I'll just be your friend for now if that's what you need me to be... I won't try and get in the way of Jared if that's what you want..." a small smile touched her lips and I was worried for a second that she had heard me until she muttered something about a rubber duck. I chuckled gently and continued the walk up to Jared's door. I got there and pressed the doorbell once gently. It was Jensen who answered, looking confused for a second before going inside to get Jared, who appeared at the door quickly.

"She fell asleep in the taxi... one too many shots I think." I said quietly, as he stepped aside and pointed toward the living room, "Other than a nasty hangover tomorrow, she should be fine."

As I stepped into the living room I was surprised to see that my sister was there.

"Hey Haz, good night?" She smiled at me. I nodded as I laid Selena down gently and removed her arms from around my neck, "I'm disappointed that you weren't our pizza!" she added with a small laugh as I sat on the arm of the chair next to Selena's feet. I rolled my eyes but figured that's why Jensen had looked so confused when he had answered the door. I shrugged and then realised there was someone else in the room, in the corner that wasn't visible when I had entered the room. I felt my blood pressure rise as my tispy mind processed who it was.

"What are you doing here?" I asked Alex bluntly.

"Harry!" Gemma exclaimed, "Fucking hell! Rude much?" I ignored her, waiting for Alex to answer my question.

"My little brother is in Meg's year so I went to see their play with JJ, Jen and Gem," she smiled at me sweetly, but I wasn't buying any of her crap. I watched as her eyes wandered to the sleeping Selena, "Isn't she cute when she's passed out?" The dig at Selena was subtle but it pissed me off. I was going to say something but Jared had entered the room, carrying a glass of water and a plate with a few slices of bread. He spoke before I could.

"She is... she's so tiny and she tries to keep up with the big boys!" he said affectionately, as he put the food and water down on the coffee table in front of Selena and turned to kneel in front of her. I watched as a stroked her cheek gently and spoke gently to wake her up. After a few seconds, her eyes fluttered open and she looked around to take in her new surroundings.

@Bunnyboo
Thank you so much for reading! Writing is my dream and I am obsessed with these characters and their stories so it's so important to me that it is told the right way... At the time when I started writing this it was a distraction because I was in a tough situation and I needed something to take my mind off of it. Now, I am in such a good place and I can see that this story hasn't been written the way that it should have been - the way I want it to be read and I don't want to spoil the ending on a sub-par version. Thank you for being so patient, I appreciate it so much and I hope that I do their story justice in my retelling.
