It was Saturday afternoon, and I hadn't stopped thinking about Jared since we had met.
We drove back from the beach once everyone had had enough of the arcade, they were more lively after the excitement of the afternoon than they had been on the way there. I sat in blissful silence, my mind running over every second making sure there was no way I could have possibly imagined it.
"Selena? We're here!" Taylor laughed waving her hand in front of my face, pulling me from my thoughts. I looked around and realised the car had stopped and we were back at the school car park, "Fancy some girl time tonight?" she asked as we got out next to my car. I glanced at Harry who was saying his goodbyes to Louis.
"Don't you want to spend the rest of the evening with Harry?"
She glanced at Harry with a small smile and then looked back at me and shook her head.
"I think he will survive the rest of the night. I feel like we've barely spoken over the last two days because he's always there." she grinned at me and opened my boot and threw her bag in, "I'm definitely ready for some normal time." I smiled widely back her in agreement and slammed the boot shut, which is when Harry and Louis appeared next to us.
"So, you need a ride home Tay?" Harry asked with a grin. I could feel Louis's eyes on me seeing how I would react, but he said nothing and I felt as though I had hardly reacted, although I didn't know how I felt about Harry using my nickname for Taylor. She smiled at him sweetly, but then turned her grin to me and linked her arm through mine.
"I think I'm going to just have some girly time tonight," Then she let go and poked his chest playfully with an index finger as she added cheekily, "But I may call you tomorrow if I can find the time in my busy schedule for you." His eyes twinkled as she spoke, I could tell he was lingering on her every word and I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy.
"I will await eagerly to see if I made the cut," he winked and chuckled, handing her the stuffed animal that he had won for her. She kissed him lightly on the cheek and with a quick wave at Louis she disappeared down the front my car. His eyes followed her as she went until she had disappeared into the passenger side and slammed the door, but he just stood staring at where she had just been. Louis coughed but Harry didn't turn to face him, he was oblivious to the world around him. It was so hard to see him looking after her like that, and I could tell that Louis was thinking the same thing because he coughed again louder, balling up his fist in front of his mouth as he doubled over. As he stood up straight again, the hand that had been balled up, shot out and gave Harry a light jab on his shoulder which got his attention.
"Yes Harry, Taylor is very pretty, back to earth now, please." He said when Harry had looked at him confused, "On that really awkward note, I'm going home. You can eagerly await to see if I made time in my busy schedule for you this weekend too, babe." Louis mocked playfully as he backed away. Harry pulled a sarcastic smile and threw his middle finger up at Louis, laughing.
Then it was just me and him.
"I hope you're feeling better after this afternoon," he said gently, his face growing a little more serious. My heart did a little flip flop when I saw the concern in his eyes, but then something happened, Jared's face flashed in my mind and I instantly felt myself smiling.
"I really do," I said quietly, "Do you?"
He nodded and grinned at me, a big dopey grin that reached his eyes and pulled me into an unexpected hug. I inhaled his sweet scent and smiled into his shoulder, wishing I could stay there forever. Then, as quickly as it had happened it was over and he was pulling away, so I forced every muscle in my body to do the same.
"See you Monday, S." He said with a small but sincere smile. I gave him a small nod but he was already getting in his own car and within seconds he had backed out of the space and was driving away. I got in my own car to see Taylor plugging her phone into my dashboard to play music as we drove to her house. For those ten minutes as we laughed and sang, there was no mention or thought of Harry and everything felt like it used to feel between me and my best friend.
"Oh my god, S! That's so cute, it sounds like something out of a film!" Taylor said dreamily as I told her about meeting Jared earlier, "Do you think he'll text?" I blushed and shrugged, "Maybe you should text him?"
"Will that not come across too eager?" I asked, taking another chocolate button from the bag between us and raising an eyebrow at her. She thought about it for a moment tilted her head in a way that meant maybe, so I continued, "No, I'll wait for him to text me I think... I hope he does though, he really was sweet." I admitted sheepishly. Taylor squealed and hugged me excitedly. I loved how excited she got over the small things, it often made me feel more hopeful about things.
She then leaned over to her bedside table and grabbed the television remote and then passed it to me indicating for me to choose something to watch. I flicked through the channels trying to find something better than The Only Way is Essex and crappy televised talent competitions. I wasn't really bothered about watching telly anyway, I was too busy watching my phone, willing Jared's name to flash up on the screen. It didn't.
Now I was sitting at my desk, attempting to get some work done like I usually did on Saturday afternoons. I looked at the clock flashing by my bed. 4:32pm it blinked back at me. I sighed and picked up my phone to make sure that I hadn't missed anything. I hadn't. I knew this before I even checked since I hadn't stopped staring at it all day. The hope that Taylor had instilled in me the day before was slowly being replaced with embarrassment at how pathetic I must have looked. I felt stupid for thinking that he would actually text me. I mean it never would have worked out any way I told myself, still staring at the phone. I was trying to convince myself that it was better that he hadn't texted me in the end. I had so much work to do and I had to prepare myself to leave for Durham in like 10 months anyway, there would be no point starting anything with anyone. Yes, you are happy that he didn't text, it was ridiculous to have given him your number and think that he would have, my inner voice chided.
I stared at my phone once more, rolled my eyes and sighed as I picked it up off the desk and opened my contacts. I would just delete and block his number so that-
My inner monologue was interrupted as my phone began vibrating in my hand and his name started flashing across the screen. I let it ring out three more times before answering it with a deep breath so that he wouldn't think that I had been sitting by my phone all day.
"Hello?" His deep voice said, causing the butterflies in my stomach to dance energetically.
"Hi!" I replied trying to control my voice and sound calm.
"Hey! So, I want a chance to explain myself if your wondering why it took me so long to call, I wanted to last night, but then I thought you might think I'm being too pushy and then I was going to call this morning, but then I didn't know if you did anything on Saturday's and I didn't want to come across like I had no life-" He seemed so nervous as he explained himself that I couldn't help but giggle knowing how much he had been over thinking everything, he stopped his explanation and I could hear the smile in his voice when he asked why I was laughing.
"It's nice of you to have been so concerned about the right time to call, but you can relax, I think you picked the perfect moment." I was so relieved that he hadn't forgotten, quite the opposite, in fact, it sounded like he hadn't stopped thinking about it.
"I'm glad you think so. So tell me about yourself Selena, other than the fact that you are tiny-" I tried to protest but he just laughed and continued, "I don't know anything about you."
"I don't know," I said nervously, laying back on my bed, "What do you want to know?"
"Tell me your entire life's story." he teased.
"It's a pretty boring story to be honest with you," I laughed, "I'm pretty sure I mentioned yesterday how avarage I am, including my height!"
"I don't believe that for a second." The smile was back and I felt like I could picture his face in my head.
"Well, even if it wasn't, which it is, you wouldn't have enough minutes to get to the interesting parts." I wondered if he could hear my smile as well as my cheeks were beginning to ache at how I couldn't seem to stop.
"You'll have to tell me over dinner tonight, then." He offered.
I felt like my heart had skipped a beat, I couldn't believe that he was asking me out for dinner. He was this gorgeous, tall, and seemingly sweet guy and he wanted to take me out for dinner. I found myself wondering if this is how Taylor had felt when Harry asked her to go see a film. I bet he would have been just as cheeky when he asked her, his eyes would have sparkled and lips tugged up into a smile on one side. I shook his face away from my thoughts and pushed my feelings for Harry back into the box in my mind where I had been trying to hide them. Maybe a date with Jared would help me move on, who knows, Jared might even turn out to be exactly what I want in my life.
"Selena? I'm sorry, we don't have to-" Jared was apologising nervously and I realised I had been quiet while I was thinking and not given him an answer.
"Hey! Sorry! Dinner sounds great!" I said enthusiastically and I heard a sigh of relief at the other end of the line.
"Great, I'll pick you up at seven if you text me your address?" I smiled and agreed. We spoke for a few more minutes and then said our goodbyes and hung up.
I looked in the mirror and saw my reflection grinning back at me, I had a date to get ready for.
