Only You

Chapter 55

“You kissed him? Finally!”

Eleanor squealed as she lay sprawled out on my bed. I turned and smiled at her from where I stood across the room before looking back to my open wardrobe. I ran my hands along the clothes neatly organised by colour, almost as though I was actually trying to get a physical feel from the right outfit.

“So tonight is like your first date then?” She asked, sitting up. I blushed. It was Friday and had been exactly five days since Harry and I had kissed. I hadn’t actually seen him since then because we decided we wanted to do this properly, not just fall into a relationship. At first I had really liked the idea of an official first date… that was until the first date nerves had kicked in.

“Yeah, but I’m trying not to think about it…” I said with a sigh as I dropped my hands. Nothing. Nothing was good enough to wear for my first date with him. He deserves a girlfriend who is confident in what she wears, who is gorgeous and sexy, I feel like all of my clothes just ooze insecurity and frigidness. Eleanor sighs behind me and walks over to the wardrobe, moving me gently out of the way and leafing through the clothes.

“I don’t get what you’re so nervous about, S, it’s only Harry… you two have hung out a million times now…” She says casually as she pulls a black long sleeved jumper dress with a red turtle neck collar and hands it to me. I look down at the dress and scrunch up my nose.

“Pair it with tights and heels, he’ll love it! Ooh and pull your hair back into a ponytail!” She says with a wink as I look at her with uncertainty. Taylor had given me this dress a year ago when she had said it would look good on me, but I had never actually worn it out of the house because it really just wasn’t my style.

“I don’t know El… It doesn’t seem very… me?” I questioned as I held it at arms-length as though it might bite me if I held it too close. She rolled her eyes and steered me toward the bathroom.

“It’s sexy, just go put it on!” She closed the door behind me and left me to get changed.

I emerged a few minutes later, feeling uncomfortable as the tight material clung to my body. She looked up from my bed and smiled.

“I knew it would look amazing!” She said, proudly examining her handiwork. I pulled my hands across my stomach as I flashed her a nervous smile. My uncertainty didn’t go unnoticed as she took me lightly by the shoulders and turned me around to face the full length mirror.

“Honestly S, don’t be nervous, you look great.”

Seven o’clock came around quicker than I had expected. I sat in the living room, perched on the edge of the sofa unable to relax as I tried to watch television with my mother.

“Lena honey, you need to relax…” She said without pulling her eyes from the soap opera dancing across the screen. I tried to take a deep breath to make an attempt at following her advice but the sound of the doorbell made me squeak out the air I had taken in instead. I got up and walked awkwardly toward the front door in the shoes that Eleanor had picked out before she left. They were a little higher than what I would have chosen for myself but I trusted her fashion advice seeing as that is what she wanted to do.

I took a deep breath, mentally chided myself into being normal and opened the door.

He looked just like he always does. Dressed casually in dark wash jeans, a white t-shirt and a brown coat paired with Chelsea boots. His hair was down and he looked perfectly effortless. As always. His eyes scanned up and down my body and he smiled, but I was hurt to see a touch of disappointment behind them.

“Hey.” I said brightly, trying to brush the thought that he might be regretting us from my mind. His eyes caught mine and he smiled wider as I stepped out toward him.

“Hi.” He said simply. We stood there staring, neither one of us willing to break eye contact as the tension between us grew.

“Lena, do you need a coat?” I was thankful for my mother speaking and breaking the moment between us. I took the coat from her hands and then kissed her on the cheek goodbye, before taking Harry’s hand and walking down the path. I’d only taken four steps before I lost my balance and wobbled a little, grateful when Harry’s hands caught my elbows to steady me.

“Are you sure you don’t want to wear shoes that are a little more sensible?” He asked, a hint of amusement in his voice. I shook my head while secretly wishing to run inside and just throw my converse on. I wanted him to see that I was worth the wait though. And that meant being sexy… and walking slowly.

We got in his car and drove in awkward silence through the dark for a few moments, neither of us sure what to say, both aware of this new status that was hanging over our interaction... this was our first date, it had to be perfect.

“So, where are we going?” I asked finally. He smiled as he took a left turn onto the road that ran alongside the river Mersey. I looked out the window at the pretty lights floating above it from the small sailing boats that were making their way back to the docks.

“I thought we could go for dinner first… it’s nowhere special, just this little Chinese place… and then there’s a funfair at the docks which I thought might be a laugh?” He said with a relaxed shrug, but his eyes looked at me desperately for approval. I smiled and nodded, although I knew in my head that I really wasn’t dressed for a casual dinner date or a funfair.

He pulled his car into the carpark and then looked at me awkwardly.

“I can’t park any closer than this… It’s going to be like a five minute walk…” He said quietly, eyeing my shoes. I looked down at my feet and tried to hide my the sense of foreboding I felt, knowing I would be in agony later. We got out and began walking slowly toward the restaurant, my arm linked through his to stop myself from falling on the uneven ground. He walked patiently beside me, patting my hand reassuringly as he strolled next to me.

“I’m sorry.” I said guiltily after a few minutes of walking. The restaurant was in sight, but I knew it was going to take us another few minutes at least to get there. He smiled and shrugged, looking up at the cloudless evening sky that hung above us.

“It’s a beautiful evening,” he then looked down at me, his eyes shining, “I have a beautiful girl on my arm… I can think of worse ways to spend my time…” I felt my cheeks flush red as he spoke and I didn’t know how to respond. He was more perfect than I had ever allowed myself to imagine he would be, and here I was, wearing heels that I couldn’t walk in, looking ridiculous next to him. A few minutes later we got to the restaurant and I couldn’t help but be filled with pride at how well he knew me.

The restaurant was nothing special, very modern with a black and purple colour scheme, it was the type of place that gave off an air of sophistication but it wasn’t fancy, and I was definitely overdressed. I looked to the back of the restaurant and felt as though the breath had been physically sucked from my lungs. The back wall of the restaurant was window from top to bottom, looking out across the water. It looked beautiful. I felt Harry’s hand on the small of my back and his lips against my ear while we waited to be seated.

“Do you like it?” He whispered. I could hear the smile in his voice as he asked and I nodded slowly in response, “I had hoped you would.” He chuckled, planting a small kiss on the top of my head before turning to the server who had just arrived in front of us.

“Reservation name?” He said curtly, glancing down at the book on the podium in front of him.

“Styles.” Harry said with a small smile. The man ran his finger down the list on both the left and right hand pages before turning over the page and doing the same on the other side, it was evident from the length of time that he was taking that there would be a problem.

“Sorry, no reservation under that name.” I looked up at Harry, his face had taken on the usual stony expression it did whenever he wasn’t happy about something, although this time his cheeks were flooding scarlet. I could tell he was embarrassed.

“Well, I made one, so can you check again please.” Harry’s voice was tight as he glanced down at me and then back at the man. The man rolled his eyes and repeated the action he had performed before. His attitude was beginning to annoy me, I was almost positive that this time he wasn’t even looking at the names.

“Oh, look at that, still no reservation under Styles.” The man smirked rudely. Harry clenched his fist down by his side and I quickly wrapped my hand around it. He looked down at me and his expression softened as I pulled him aside, it had gone from rage to one of guilt and shame.

“I’m sorry… I don’t know what’s happened… I made the reservation…” He mumbled running a hand through his curls. I smiled and pulled him toward the exit, stepping back into the crisp January air. I looked left and right, hoping to find a quick fix to our situation. I grinned when I noticed a little pizza place a little way down the street.

“Pizza?” I questioned and pointed toward the place. Harry smiled half-heartedly and nodded, linking his arm with mine again so that I would be able to walk again. I felt so bad that he was so embarrassed by the whole situation but I didn’t know how to make it better, I had never seen him like this before. We stepped inside the small restaurant for which I was even more overdressed and luckily got seated after a few minutes of waiting.

“Are you sure this is okay?” He asked with a hint of worry as we sat down and got given our menus. I smiled at him and reached across the table, taking his hand gently in my own.

“It’s perf-!” I started but was cut off by Harry suddenly jumping out of his seat.

“Fuck!” He yelped and turned to look at the server behind him who had accidentally just tipped a jug of ice water down his back. He looked terrified as Harry turned on him, his face like thunder as he took his jacket off and asked for a new chair bluntly. The boy came back over with a new chair and some napkins for Harry to dab at any wet clothes with. After a few seconds, Harry was sitting back down at the table but I swear I could see the steam coming from his ears with how angry he was.

“Are you okay?” I asked him softly, my brow furrowing sadly.

“Of course.” He said with a smile that seemed a little forced before he changed the subject, “Have you decided what you want yet?”

“Probably just a Margherita…” I said, my eyes scanning over the items once more and then looking at him with a smile, “You?”

“I was thinking pepperoni or Hawaiian.” He placed his menu back on the table and looked over to see if our waiter was anywhere near. He saw Harry looking and came over to take our order promptly. He still seemed on edge when the waiter walked away, so I tried to distract him.

“It’s been years since I’ve been to the funfair…” I smiled excitedly, trying to make him feel good about his idea for a first date. He looked at me and smiled, his shoulders dropping slightly as he started to relax again.

“My dad used to take me and Gemma when we were younger and used to stay with him in Manchester at the weekends.” My smile dropped slightly at the mention of his dad taking him to the funfair when he was younger, a reaction that didn’t go unnoticed by Harry. He furrowed his brow in confusion.

“My dad used to take me, before he left us…” I muttered before shaking my sadness away and smiling, “It’s okay, I just haven’t really thought about him in a while.” Harry reached across the table and took my hand softly in his.

“We can go to the cinema instead if you want?” He rubbed small circles on my hand sympathetically with his thumb.

“Of course not, I want us to have an amazing time at the funfair!” I grinned, “Oh, and I expect you to win me a goldfish!” I added with a wink making him chuckle.

“I’ll win you every fish in the ocean if you want me to…” He said quietly with a small smile. I couldn’t stop myself from blushing at how sweet he was being. A few minutes later and our food was put down in front of us. I took one bite and screwed my nose up, it tasted worse than the pizza we got in the school cafeteria and I could tell that Harry had had exactly the same thought.

“Well this is grim.” He said, the irritated tone back in his voice as he dropped the slice back onto the plate. I took one look at him and couldn’t help myself as a giggle escaped my lips. He cocked an eyebrow up in question, but I saw a smirk tugging at the corner of his lip.

“It really is terrible…” I laughed, taking my pizza slice and knocking it against the side of my plate to show how hard it was. He looked at me incredulously for a second before I heard his familiar throaty chuckle slip out.

“You want to just go and we’ll get something at the fair?” He asked. I nodded as he turned around to fish something out of his coat pocket. A second later he turned around to the other side and dipped his hand into the other pocket.

“What are you looking for?” I asked, furrowing my brow in concern. He stood up and delve his hands into both his side pockets in his jeans and his back pocket, emptying his keys and phone onto the table. His face was looking a mixture of panic and embarrassment.

“I’ve lost my wallet…” He groaned as he sat down and put his head in his hands embarrassed. I instantly opened my purse and pulled out a twenty pound note, laying it on the table and stood up. He looked at the note and then at me, I could see that he was internally cringing at the sight as he stood up.

“This is so embarrassing. We will swing by mine on the way back and I’ll run in and grab some cash before I take you home, I promise…” He mumbled as he pulled his coat back on. It was an easy mistake, I didn’t want this to ruin our date. I reached out and took his hand gently in mine and pulled him toward the door, walking as quickly as I could in my heels. We got back into the cold street and I shivered, pulling my coat around my shoulders before hooking my arm through Harry’s. He didn’t seem to notice the cold though, he was too busy lost in his thoughts. I knew he was giving himself a hard time. We walked in silence toward the flashing lights and I found myself in awe.

The tinkling music got louder the closer we got and it was accompanied by the warming smell of burgers and hotdogs that were frying on pop up stalls. I stopped at the entrance and looked up at the colourful sign. It looked exactly the same as it had when my dad had taken me when I was younger. I looked up at Harry and feeling my eyes on him, he looked back down at me and smiled lightly.

“I’m glad you brought me here Harry.” I said with a grin and looked back up at the sign.

“You are?” He asked quietly, I could still feel his eyes on me. I took a deep breath, inhaling the nostalgia I felt looking into the fair.

“Yeah… It will be nice to have better memories of this place…” I sighed, feeling my heart begin to ache a little at the thought of my dad but I quickly pushed it aside, I wasn’t going to let what he did to me and my mother ruin my mood.

“Let’s go.” I said brightly and pulled Harry gently into the colourful chaos.

Much to Harry’s disappointment I bought us both wristbands for the rides, followed by two hot dogs and a diet coke to share. We sat on a bench while we ate, talking and watching the people around us. We watched as couples walked past, hand in hand, smiling and laughing, holding stuffed animals that had been won for them. I smiled and leant my head on Harry’s shoulder affectionately and he instinctively wrapped his arm around my shoulders.

“Do you think we look that cute?” I asked quietly gesturing to a couple waiting in line at the hot dog stand. We watched as the small blonde babbled on, seemingly without taking a breath, so interested in what she was talking about while her boyfriend looked down at her a small smile dancing on his lips. His eyes were shining as she spoke, like she was his entire world. It was the look. The one that guys give leading ladies in films. The one that means you’re really in love.

“I hope so…” Harry said planting a small kiss on my forehead. I instinctively smiled before eating the final bite of my hotdog and screwing up the foil wrapper and standing up.

“Ready to go on some rides? I want to go on the Ferris wheel and the teacups!” I said as I threw the ball into a nearby bin. Harry smiled and stood, holding his arm out to me so that we could walk over to the big wheel flashing all different colours. I stared up at the wheel, excitement building in my stomach at the thought of going up so high and seeing the city just as I had when I was younger but we were going on the teacups first. We stood in the short line and minutes later we were at the front.

We got ourselves seated and the old man operating the ride, closed the gate and spun the teacup round a little. I grinned at Harry as the ride started and we began turning the wheel in the middle which in turn sent the teacup spinning. Harry and I laughed wholeheartedly, throwing our heads back as his hair whipped around his face the faster we went. Well, we laughed for the first minute or so, then Harry wasn’t laughing as much anymore as his face started turning a little green. We stopped the spinning, but it seemed that the damage was already done as he put his head back and closed his eyes, his lips moving softly as he mouthed something to himself that I couldn’t hear over the music.

“Harry are you ok- Shit!” I gasped as Harry’s eyes went wide and he leant over and threw up. I instinctively moved my feet out of the firing line as I grabbed his hair and held it behind his head and rubbed his back. I was glad when he sat up a few seconds later, it was only a little bit and everything was fine. This was not the same as how Harry felt though. His cheeks went scarlet with embarrassment and his face became unreadable until the ride came to an end. I sat quietly, looking up at him sadly, his eyes not meeting mine as we waited for the man to unlock the gate.

“I saw you throw up mate, are you okay?” He asked with concern as he opened the gate to let us out. Harry’s eyes went wide as he stood up without a word, jumped out and walked to the exit quickly. I looked after him and then looked at the man apologetically.

“I’m sorry, I think he’s embarrassed… It was only a little bit…” I said pointing to the floor as I stepped out of the teacup with his help.

“It’s okay, don’t worry about it! We see a lot of people chucking up on the teacups…” He said with a grimace as he shook his head and let my hand go. I smiled thankfully before walking carefully over to the exit Harry had just escaped to, praying that he was still just standing out there getting some air. I walked through the archway, looking for Harry in the sea of people in front of me desperately. I caught sight of him leaning over a bin, gripping the sides as he threw up again and sighed sadly. I walked over to him slowly, feeling bad for suggesting the teacups and like his current state was all my fault. I was too busy watching him and feeling bad to be concerned about the uneven ground and the grate that was in front of me as I walked toward him.

“Shit!” I yelped loudly as my heel slipped through the grate followed by a splitting sound that I knew could only be my shoe breaking. Harry moved forward quickly and stopped me from falling down as I tried to catch my balance now that I had one flat and one high shoe. I groaned as I looked down and knew that the damage was already too far gone. Harry helped me over to the nearby bench, and I expected him to sit with me, but instead he stood and kicked the bin next to us angrily.

“Hey, hey! It’s not that-“ I started trying to calm him down but he cut me off, turning to me, his eyes full of fury.

“No, don’t! Just stop! Don’t tell me again that it’s not that bad and that it’s okay, because this is so far from okay!” He hissed as he ran a hand through his hair, “Tonight was meant to be perfect and it’s just been one thing after another going wrong! It’s all my fault and I just want to call it a night and go home!” I sat silently processing what he had just said for a minute or two.

“What do you mean you want to call it a night?” I said quietly, “It’s our first date Harry… I don’t want it to end like this…” I looked up at him but he wouldn’t meet my eye as he groaned in response.

“This has just been a disaster from start to fucking finish and I just want to go home.” He muttered. I felt the tears welling in my eyes as he spoke, the magic of the night that I had been anticipating for the last week slipping away as quickly as it came.

“Okay.” I mumbled, standing up on my lopsided shoes and hobbling toward the exit with Harry walking swiftly behind me.

“S, slow down, do you need any help?” He called after me, but I just ignored him and carried on marching away on my sore feet feeling like a damn idiot for ever believing that Harry and I would ever work. A tear slipped over my lash and I quickly wiped it away with the back of my hand, determined to not let him see me cry. I stormed under the archway and away from the noise and alongside the river. We were walking over the bridge when Harry caught my wrist and pulled me gently to a stop.

“S?” he said quietly.

“What?” I snapped, I yanked my wrist out of his grip and turned to face him.

“I’m sorry that tonight was so bad, please don’t-“ I didn’t even let him finish before I felt my anger boiling over.

“No Harry! Tonight was spoiled by you! I wasn’t having a bad time!” I yelled at him, throwing my hands in the air as the tears broke their barricade and began trickling down my cheeks. He looked shocked for a second and then furrowed his brow.

“You had a good time? What a load of shit! Tonight was a fucking shit show!” he snapped harshly. I took a step forward, glaring at him as he continued, “You had to hobble to a restaurant that lost my reservation, I had fucking ice water chucked down my back, you had to pay for shit pizza that we didn’t even eat, we got on one ride and I fucking threw up on you and then those ridiculous shoes nearly broke your ankle! What part of that sounds like fun to you?”

“Is that what you think happened tonight?” I hissed, “Sure, we had to walk a little to get to the restaurant, but I got to walk arm in arm with you, something I have been wishing I could do for months now! I got to sit opposite you and hold your hand, knowing that it was my hand to hold and I didn’t have to feel fucking guilty for it! I don’t care that you lost your wallet because I expected to have more than one date with you and you can just pay next time! I’m not that petty! I went to a fair that I only have sad memories from, thinking I was going to make great new ones with someone who means the world to me! I don’t care about you throwing up on the ride, it happens, get over it! And you’re right these shoes are fucking horrendous, I hate them, they’re not me at all! All I wanted was for you to see that I was worth the wait! But no, you have had the worstnight ever so clearly not!”

I stood opposite him panting as I finished my rant, the tears still flowing freely down my face while Harry just stood opposite me, wide eyed and in shock. Without another word, I went to turn away but he stopped me again. I turned to tell him to get off when his hands were suddenly cupping my cheeks and his lips were pressed gently to mine. Without a moment’s hesitation, my hands were in his hair and my body pressed against his, melting into our kiss. A few seconds later he pulled away, resting his forehead against my own as he wiped my tears away with his thumbs.

“You think that I meant that you weren’t worth the wait?” He whispered sadly and I could see his eyes shining brightly with tears as I shrugged, “Selena, the reason tonight has been so bad for me is because I wanted it to be perfect for you because I still can’t believe that I finally have you.”

“Then why did you look so disappointed when you saw me for the first time tonight?” I asked quietly, remembering the look in his eyes.

“I was disappointed because I knew you’d dressed up for me and that you were expecting a perfect and sophisticated night and I had planned to go to a funfair…” He pulled away and looked down at my dress, running his fingertips along it, “I’m a little disappointed that you thought you had to try so hard to impress me… I love the way you look S… all this just doesn’t seem like you…” He admitted. I surprised him by smiling as I leant against him with one arm and lifted my foot up behind me.

“What are you…” He trailed off as I pulled both my broken and normal heel off in turn and without a moment’s hesitation through them into the river below us. I lifted my hand to my head and tugged the bobble to the end of my hair, letting my natural waves flow loose. I looked back up at Harry, who was watching me, a dimpled smile settled on his lips and his eyes lit up with happiness. He took a step forward and reached out to run his fingers through the ends of my hair.

“I agree, this is more me.” I said gently, reaching up and taking his hand in my own. He turned to look back at the fair and then looked back at me.

“If you’d let me, I’d like to at least give you one good memory of tonight…”

I nodded and then looked down at my feet, an action that was mimicked by Harry as we both had the same thought. I was now shoeless. He grinned and turned around, leaning back a little.

“Hop up.” He demanded happily and I obliged with a laugh, wrapping my arms over his shoulders and jumping onto his back before he started making his way back toward the fair.

“I shouldn’t have let El convince me that the dress and shoes was a good idea…” I said as he walked along.

“The dress looks beautiful on you, but I think you’d look much better out of it…” He chuckled as I slapped his arm gently for his dirty joke.

“Bad boy, Harry.” I whispered, feeling him tense up beneath me as my breath bounced off his ear. I moved his hair aside gently and kissed the back of his neck gently, earning a quick squeeze on my thighs from him. I laughed gently before he carried on walking, now in comfortable silence. I hugged him from behind and buried my face into his hair, breathing in his scent, allowing myself to do ‘the inhale’ that Harry had done all that time ago.

“Did you just smell my hair?” He asked, chuckling as we passed under the arch.

“Maybe.” I replied, blushing because I had been caught as we made our way over to the Ferris wheel which surprisingly only had had a few people in the line.

“According to your logic that must mean that you like me.” He said softly, as the people in front of us walked up to take their seat. The big wheel took them up and stopped as the next chair came round to the bottom of the wheel. Harry walked up the stairs and put me down in front of the chair where I took my seat and he sat next to me. I grinned as the barrier was pulled down over us and Harry put his arm around me. We sat in blissful silence, watching the Liverpool skyline appear as we went higher and higher until we almost got to the top, when Harry turned to me with a small smile.

“I’m sorry that I ruined tonight…” He said softly.

“It’s okay, the ending has been perfect… well almost…” I said, turning to look at him. His smile dropping slowly as we reached the top. I smiled and moved my hand to the back of his neck before pulling his lips to mine. The kiss was soft and sweet and only lasting a few seconds, but I knew I would never forget it as I pulled away.

“Now it’s perfect.”

@Bunnyboo
Thank you so much for reading! Writing is my dream and I am obsessed with these characters and their stories so it's so important to me that it is told the right way... At the time when I started writing this it was a distraction because I was in a tough situation and I needed something to take my mind off of it. Now, I am in such a good place and I can see that this story hasn't been written the way that it should have been - the way I want it to be read and I don't want to spoil the ending on a sub-par version. Thank you for being so patient, I appreciate it so much and I hope that I do their story justice in my retelling.
