Only You

Chapter 51

I could hear the music pulsing from the front steps as we walked up the path to Harry and Gemma’s house. I adjusted my dress, pulling it down at the hem, suddenly feeling like it was far too short as Jensen rang the doorbell. I wished silently to myself that I hadn’t listened to Eleanor’s advice earlier on the outfit and had stuck with my gut instinct and worn jeans and a nice top.

“You look great, stop worrying.” Jared said in a hushed voice from beside me as he squeezed my hand. I forced a smile and nodded, pretending that I was satisfied, but I wasn’t. Obviously I wanted Jared to think I looked good. Half of me wanted his affection and his approval, I wanted him protectively keeping me close to him, his hand on my back, letting everyone know that I was his. That part of me was satisfied.

The other part of me was nervous for Harry to see. Wondering what he would do. Wondering what he would think… That part of me wanted Harry’s eyes to be on me all night, to be jealous of Jared, wishing that it was his hand on my back. That was the same part of me that imagined his hands sliding slowly up my thighs every time I closed my eyes.

The door opened and a girl I didn’t recognise greeted Jensen with an excited hug and then nodded to me and Jared before stepping aside and motioning for us to come in. We stepped inside the familiar hallway that was now lined with people standing in small huddles talking and laughing merrily as they drank. Once we had thrown our coats in the downstairs cloakroom, Jared steered me from behind to follow Jensen into the kitchen to put our drinks in the fridge and say hello to Gemma and let her know that we were here.

“Jenzy!” She giggled as she approached Jensen with a giddy smile on her face. He pulled her close and planted a small kiss on her painted purple lips with a smile, the action earned a sentimental sigh from the people watching nearby. She whispered something in his ear and then swayed a little as she turned back to her group of friends. Jared smirked and moved over to the fridge, putting his beers in any empty space he could find.

“Hey Jenzy, you want your beer in the fridge?” He mocked the nickname that Gemma had used, earning a scowl from his brother. I wasn’t paying much attention as Jensen muttered something back at his brother though, I was too busy looking around hoping to see someone that I knew. I caught sight of Eleanor standing with Louis in the corner, he had his hands on her slender hips while she ran her hands through the back of his hair, talking with their faces close together. They looked as though they were getting lost in one another and I didn’t want to interrupt that so I thought it would be best if I just left them to it and caught up with them later. Where was Harry then? I turned to Jared with a small smile.

“Just going to the bathroom.” I lied, touching my lips gently to his cheek. He nodded and told me he would wait there as I disappeared into the crowd. I immediately thought that Harry was probably hiding out in his room and decided to check there first. On the way out of the kitchen though, I bumped into someone, knocking their drink to the floor.

“Ah shit! I’m so sorry!” I gasped as I looked up and saw a pair of piercing blue eyes looking back at me.

“Urgh! Watch where you’re going! For god’s sake, Selena!” She scowled as she wiped the orange wet patch on her white pants. Her attitude instantly made me feel less sorry as I picked up the cup and placed it on the table that stood in the hall.

“I’m sorry.” I repeated, less enthusiastic this time. I could see from the glare that she shot me that she was just as uninterested in hearing my apology as I was in giving it. After a second her face softened as she glanced into the kitchen, appearing to look for something.

“Is Jared here? I haven’t seen him yet?” She asked. I forced a smile despite the immediate suspicion that there was too much effort going into making her voice sound casual.

“Yeah we just got here.” At the mention of Jared her eyes seemed to light up but it reminded me of what she had said on the last night at the chalet, “Where’s Dean?” I asked and she looked down at me with a sad smile but it didn’t seem to match the excitement in her eyes.

“Oh, he’s sick.” She pouted her lip for a second.

“But you guys are still good, right?” I asked slowly as she peered over my head looking for Jared again.

“Sure.” She said, not paying attention anymore. She decided that the conversation was over now as she pushed past me and into the kitchen. From behind me I heard her enthusiastic gasp and high pitched excited shout for my boyfriend. I rolled my eyes debating whether to go back to them or not, but decided against it, I wanted to find Harry.

I slipped between excited partygoers in the hall and carefully stepped over a few people who were a little too drunk sitting on the staircase, making sure to hold my skirt down as I did. I got to the top of the stairs and moved quietly to his door, tapping on it lightly.

“Come in!” Harry’s voice called from inside.

I opened the door and saw him sitting on his bed alone on his laptop. He was wearing pyjama pants, no shirt, wrapped in a blanket with his hair tied up in a bun on top of his head. He glanced at me once, looked back at the laptop and then glanced up again, this time his green eyes going wide as they scanned over my body, a small smile dancing on his lips but he didn’t speak.

“Not in a party mood?” I asked quietly as I closed the door behind me. He closed the laptop and swung his feet to the floor, leaving the blanket at the head of the bed, giving me his full attention as he shook his head gently.

“Not particularly.” He muttered, his eyes were sparkling as they watched me intently. There was a tension in the air as we just stood there staring at one another for a few seconds, neither of us daring to move as though we were afraid to scare the other away.

“You look…” He said eventually but trailed off as though he struggled to find a way to put into words what he could see. My heart fluttered gently.

“Thanks.” I whispered, leaning against the door and looking down as I blushed. I heard him get up from the bed and his bare feet appeared in my eye line. He had closed the gap between us to about a foot and I could now smell his cologne wrapping itself around me like a hug. Without thinking I reached up and began tracing the tattoo on his chest, running my fingers lightly over the intricate detail of the large butterfly. Harry didn’t question what I was doing, his hand was suddenly against the door next to my head and he had moved a little closer. I looked up at him and he was looking down at me. I pressed my forehead to his gently.

“I can’t.” I whispered, not moving, knowing that he would understand.

“I know.” He said, also not moving his head. He moved his hands down to my waist and pulled my body closer to his. I could hear my heart beating in my ears as every fibre of my being begged me to kiss him. I reached my hands into his hair and tugged at the ends, feeling like I couldn’t take it anymore.

“I want y-.” I was cut off by the sound of Jared’s voice getting closer, calling my name, breaking the spell. I moved my head from Harry’s and untangled my fingers from his hair as he stepped back, his face flushing red. He grabbed a t-shirt and pulled it over his head as he took his previous position on the bed under the laptop. I panted, ashamed that I almost gave in to Harry as I opened the door and slipped into the corridor just as Jared reached the top of the stairs.

“Hey, where’ve you been? I thought you were just going to be the bathroom?” He asked with a smile when he spotted me outside of the bathroom door.

“Yeah sorry, there was a line.” I said as I gestured to someone who slipped past me. Jared nodded and then took my hand, a serious look crossing his face. He pulled me into Gemma’s room and shut the door.

“I just spoke to Alex.” He muttered as he sank down onto the bed. Realising that she must have told him that she was getting back together with Dean, I took a seat next to him and rested a hand on his knee.

“She said he’s been getting worse and won’t take no for an answer… It’s just so-“ He didn’t get a chance to finish his sentence as I snatched my hand away and jumped up, interrupting him, too confused to keep quiet.

“What? She told me that they’re back together and that they’re fine!” I snapped, eyes wide expecting him to take on the same reaction. He just looked up at me from the bed, his brow furrowed.

“Selena, she thinks you think he cheated because she doesn’t want to make a big deal out of it, of course told you that they were fine…” He said with a shrug as if that explained everything.

No! She specifically told me that they were back together and that he was meant to be here tonight! I asked her where he was earlier and she told me he was sick!” He shushed me as I raised my voice, throwing my hands up in the air in exasperation. Why couldn’t he see how weird this was?

“You must have misheard her babe-“

“I didn’t bloody mishear her!” I snapped loudly, thankful for the pulsing music downstairs and the fact that upstairs was pretty much empty. I could see that he was beginning to get irked by my reaction but I decided then and there that I was done with this, something funny was going on and I was going to make Jared see sense.

“She told me these things explicitly!” I stressed holding my hands up to him for emphasis.

“Selena, at the end of the day she doesn’t know that you know, so youshould know that whatever she’s saying to you is just a cover!” He said sharply, glaring at me now, expecting me to concede and agree, but I couldn’t.

No, she’s just lying through her teeth! How can you believe her over me? There is something so fucked up about this whole thing!” I yelled, I could feel the tears prickling behind my eyes. I wished so hard that he would get up and hug me and tell me that he believed me. But that didn’t happen. He put his head in hands for a second before standing up and looking at me with his eyes empty.

“Selena, you of all people should realise how hard this is on her… I’m so…” He clenched his fist and then released it with a sigh, “Look, I think one of us should leave and we’ll just talk tomorrow.”

A tear crept it’s way over my lower lashes and slowly trickled down my face as I turned without another word and left the room, slamming the door as I did. I ran down the stairs to get my coat, I just wanted to go home now, I wasn’t in a party mood at all anymore. I pushed my way into the cloakroom and began looking underneath all the different coats to find mine, alone in the room until the door opened and in walked Alex. I turned to stare at her and the anger rose inside me.

“What’s wrong, Selena?” Her voice was sickly sweet as she smiled at me. I took a step toward her.

“Why did you tell Jared and I two different stories?” I hissed, throwing down the coat that I had just picked up. Alex’s eyes glistened with malice.

“He was too invested for me to flirt my way in between you both.” She said calmly an evil smile etched onto her face. I was taken aback, I wasn’t expecting that.

“He just needed a push to remind him how much he cares for me, and how young and immature you are.” She sniggered as she stepped closer, “It didn’t even take that much effort! All I had to do was plant a little seed in your mind to grow you into a the perfect little psycho.” She added, sitting down on bench above the shoe racks, crossing her long legs, watching me.

“You’re crazy!” I concluded, still unsure of what was actually going on. Alex’s smile didn’t falter as I continued, “Who’s Dean? How does he fit into all of this?” I snapped, determined to get to the bottom of it now.

“Dean?” She sneered and my blood ran cold, I knew what she was going to say before the words left her lips, I had suspected it deep down all along.

“Dean isn’t real.”

I heard her laughing as I pushed through the door and bolted back up the stairs to tell Jared. Now that Alex had confessed everything to me, there was no way he wouldn’t believe me.

He was just leaving Gemma’s bedroom as I reached the top of the stairs, tears streaming down my face. His own expression remained stony as I approached. I grabbed onto his forearms desperately.

“Jared, she’s lying, Dean isn’t real, she made him up to-“

“Selena, just fucking stop!” He yelled suddenly, ripping his arms out of my grip and taking a step back. I stood there speechless. He didn’t believe me.

“No, Jared, she just told-“ He wouldn’t let me finish, he ran his hands through his hair as his face crumpled.

“I can’t do this! It’s too much!” He shouted.

I couldn’t speak. I felt numb inside. I felt like someone was punching me but time had stopped just as their hand had connected with my jaw. It was happening, Jared was breaking up with me over her.

She had won.

He panted, watching for a few seconds as tears began running down his cheeks. I opened my mouth but no words would come out. What was there left to say? I had tried to tell him the truth and he thought I was crazy.

He walked past me without another word and down the stairs. I wanted to run after him but I couldn’t I was stuck.

“S, are you ok?” Harry’s voice sounded like it was a million miles away despite him being stood right beside me. I shook my head and without another word, walked down the stairs and out of the front door, I just wanted to go home.

“Woah, woah, no! Get in the car!”

Harry had chased me down the stairs and out of the house realising what I was trying to do. He gently steered me back toward his car and put me in the passenger seat. I still couldn’t find the words to explain what was happening inside my head.

He didn’t believe me.

Harry drove me home in silence as I watched the empty streets out of the window. I was too numb to speak, too numb to cry, to numb to breathe. I was convinced that I had died, because Jared had broken my heart and ripped it from my chest. We arrived at my house and Harry walked me to the front door, but I barely noticed. I hadn’t really been taking anything in until the door opened and my mum stood in front of me. Her initial smile was replaced with a look of concern.

“What’s wrong Lena?” Her soft voice seemed to start the clock in my head again. I felt the full impact of the blow that I had been dealt and I began to cry hysterically. Harry caught me as my knees buckled, holding me to his chest telling me that it was okay, that everything was going to be alright. He carried me into the house, up the stairs and into my bedroom laying me down on the bed with my mum. She cooed over me and cradled me into her like I was six again and I had fallen off my bike.

For the rest of the night I wished so hard that I was six and I had just fallen off my bike so that when I woke up, this pain in my chest would be gone.

@Bunnyboo
Thank you so much for reading! Writing is my dream and I am obsessed with these characters and their stories so it's so important to me that it is told the right way... At the time when I started writing this it was a distraction because I was in a tough situation and I needed something to take my mind off of it. Now, I am in such a good place and I can see that this story hasn't been written the way that it should have been - the way I want it to be read and I don't want to spoil the ending on a sub-par version. Thank you for being so patient, I appreciate it so much and I hope that I do their story justice in my retelling.
