Only You

Chapter 12

On Monday morning, there was a buzz in the air as our music class waited eagerly to find out who they were in a group with for the second performances. Taylor, Louis, Selena and I had been discussing all morning who we were hoping to be partnered with.

"I hope I get put with you," Taylor said sweetly looking at me, as we took our seats. I smiled, put my arm around her and kissed her on the cheek, because it was a nice thought, I liked that she wanted to spend time with me, but then I subtly turned to Louis and grinned properly, holding out my fist for him to bump in agreement that we were hoping to be partnered together. Louis and I knew that our voiced meshed nicely, as we had dabbled in writing our own songs together over the years anyway. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Selena watching me and then roll her eyes. While it was kind of annoying that I felt like she was constantly judging me, I did like how she looked out for Taylor when she thought I was doing her an injustice. I quickly brought my hand back up to the table and looked at her with a smile.

"What about you, S?" I asked warmly, although after a few seconds when she hadn't returned my smile, I felt my own begin to fade, something was definitely up, and I felt like a little boy who had just been caught eating biscuits before my dinner.

"I just want to be put with the person that's going to get me the best grade, and don't call me 'S' only Taylor calls me that." She snapped back. I must have looked really shocked by her aggression because her face softened slightly and she spoke again, "Sorry Harry, I'm just tired."

I nodded cautiously and decided it best to leave her alone. I turned to Louis and in a hushed voice I spoke to him, "What the fuck was that all about?" Louis just carried on looking forward to the front of the class and shrugged as though he hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary.

"Ok guys, that's enough! Liam, lose the gum, please, Horan, you can give me the pack it came from, thank you." Mr. Ford's voice came from the front of the class making me forget the oddness of what had just gone on.

"I sorted out the final groups for your performances, so that's what you're going to be doing today. I would like to make clear before you even get your groups, that they are non-negotiable so if you don't like your group, you can just wipe your tears on your A*s in August." a small laugh accompanied by a few groans came from the class and then he started reading out the groups. Selena's was the first name we heard out of the four of us. I said a silent prayer in my head that she had been put with someone who wouldn't make her life difficult.

"Gomez and Puth..." I smiled with relief. I had known Charlie since we were young, as far as I knew he was a good singer and fairly easy going, which should make their partnership a breeze. He picked up his guitar and came and sat in an empty seat at our table. I was pulled from my thoughts when my ears perked up again on hearing my own last name.

" ... Styles and Tomlinson." I looked at Louis expecting to see him grinning stupidly at me, but instead I was greeted with three sets of eyes staring at me and Selena looked as though all the blood had been drained from her face. I was about to ask what I had missed but needed no explanation when I saw two people approaching our table. They pulled up two chairs behind Louis and I and all I could think was that Mr. Ford had to be fucking kidding.

"Alright Haz?" Liam said quietly next to my ear, with a spiteful laugh and patted me on the shoulder, "Looking a bit pale there pal, not happy with your group?" I shrugged his hand off aggressively and didn't say anything, I could feel the anger bubbling inside of me and I was at serious risk of blowing my lid if he said another word. I closed my eyes and tried to count to ten to calm myself as Liam moved his hand and leaned back in his chair before turning his attention to someone else at the table.

"Selena! Nice scarf, Niall and I really think that red is your colour." I watched as she fingered the edges of her scarf, and I felt my face go hot with anger. Taylor looked at me and read my expression and began rubbing my thigh in an attempt to comfort me, but if anything the feel of someone touching me just annoyed me even more. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Louis glance at Mr. Ford who was wrapped up in his list, then suddenly he jabbed Liam hard on the shoulder, and for a second Liam, Niall and I just stared at him in surprise.

"Stop being a prick." Louis said bluntly under his breath, his nose turning up in disgust. I expected Liam and Niall to turn their spite to Louis, but they just pulled what seemed like a frustrated face and sat back quietly. Selena was sat staring at Louis amazed who gave her a small smile accompanied by a subtle wink that nobody else was meant to see? Had something happened between them at the beach on Friday when they had gone to get food? I had asked Louis in passing and he had said no, but then they definitely seemed like something had changed between them. I felt slightly irked that I was meant to be watching out for Selena, but she seemed more appreciative when Louis did it. I then noticed that Ed had also joined our table and that must have been who Taylor had been paired with in the end. On seeing that I pushed away all feelings of annoyance, which were replaced by embarrassment that I hadn't even noticed some guy come and sit to talk with Taylor.

"That's everyone then, so I think we should spend this lesson getting to know one another and the styles of music you would be interested in doing?" Mr. Ford said and the noise began rising in the room, excited voices discussing what they wanted to do for their performances.

"Are you joking? It's perfect!" Louis said as we drove to the nearby Tesco to pick up some lunch. The school's dinner had looked even more questionable than usual so Louis and I were on our way to pick up some sandwiches while the girls got on with some work, "We can speak to the guys in a place where Kendall has no monopoly over them." he continued and then added, "Don't lie Haz, I know what they did was really shitty, but they've still been good mates to you over the years."

I thought about it for a second, and as much as I hated to admit it I did kind of miss my other friends. Liam had been like a brother to me growing up as he only lived a street away, and Niall was always up for a laugh in a way that sometimes the others weren't. I shrugged, pretending to Louis that he was wrong, but I could see from his face that he knew it was a load of shit.

"Yeah well, we'll see." I said, "Anyway, so what's going on with you and Selena then? You two seemed to have a moment in music?" I asked, changing the subject. I hadn't been able to get the look she had given him off my mind and I didn't know why but I really wanted to know what was going on. Louis was looking at his phone but looked at me confused when he answered.

"You asked me this the other day, nothing?" He said with a shrug, "We just had a chat when we went to get food on Friday, and she seems nice in, like, a friend way I guess? Why do you keep asking?" I could feel his eyes on me, boring into my skin with their curiosity. I just shrugged and continued to stare ahead at the road. I couldn't answer his question because I didn't even know myself. To avoid any more conversation I simply turned on the radio and blasted it loud for the rest of the journey, trying not to think too much.

When we got back to school with the sandwiches, we went into the study room and found the girls sitting with their heads bent over their work. Taylor looked up and smiled brightly at us when we pushed through the door, but Selena just sat scribbling away furiously. Secretly I had known who Selena was for years, although I would never have admitted that to Kendall. While the guys and I had been messing around in lessons, ignoring the fact that at some point this would all be over, she was always sitting at the front of the class listening so intently, working harder than I had ever seen anyone work before... I had quietly admired her dedication to her future and kind of wished that I had the same sort of motivation for myself. I think that's why it had annoyed me so much when Kendall did what she did. I had been watching this girl quietly mind her own business for years and Kendall wanted to get in her head, that head that I knew was filled with so much to offer the world... I suppose me trying to stand up for her only made things worse though... Louis seemed to do a better job at it anyway.

"Hey you, you ok?" Taylor said stroking my cheek lightly. I realised that I must have been staring into space getting lost in my thoughts when and everyone had started eating their lunch. I blinked so I could catch up to what was happening around me. I saw Taylor sitting beside me, her big blue eyes filled with concern, and then Louis and Selena sitting opposite us deep in conversation, barely paying Taylor and I any attention. I turned my eyes back to Taylor and forced a smile.

"Yeah, sorry," I tried to sound breezy, "I guess I just spaced out for a second." Taylor didn't seem to notice that my head wasn't all there today because she just nodded and then changed the subject.

"So, I have to go over to Ed's tonight because..." She started babbling on at me and I had to really concentrate to stay focused when I could feel my brain trying to zone out again, it wasn't until what she said about a minute later that I suddenly heard every word, "... but I was thinking that after my study group on Thursday, we could go on a double date with Selena?"

"Selena and Louis? Louis said nothing was going on there?" Taylor looked at me confused and I realised that I had clearly not been listening to something that answered that question. After a second, she rolled her eyes looking as though she was starting to lose her patience with me not listening properly, "No, obviously not Selena and Louis, Selena and Jared!" I quickly thought through the people in our year and knew that there was definitely no Jared.

"Who is Jared?" I asked quickly. Taylor looked at me clearly wondering why I sounded so eager to know and to be honest I was wondering the same.

"Didn't I tell you? Just this guy that Selena met on Friday at the arcade, he took her on a really sweet date on Saturday! I must have forgotten to tell you." She said shrugging her shoulders with a smile, "Anyway, I think we should all go on a double date because I really want to meet him."

"Yeah, sure, Thursday!" I said trying to match her easy-going tone although that is nowhere near how I felt.

It was 5th period and Taylor had Geography, so it was just Selena and I walking out to the carpark to go home. I wanted to start a conversation, but I felt strangely awkward and I could tell that her mind was somewhere else. Probably with Jared.

"So, Taylor told me that you met someone?" I said casually.

"Jared, yeah!" She corrected me with a smile. I didn't want to, but the look of happiness in her eyes made me automatically smile back. She had a great smile, one that really reached her eyes and made you feel all warm inside.

"She was saying that we should all go on a double date on Thursday evening ." I eyed her intently to see her reaction as we approached our cars.

"Yeah, she mentioned it. I'll have to check with him but I can't see why not... It will be fun!" she said brightly. I deduced from her reaction that it was just me that got the feeling it would be weird then. I silently wondered what was going on with me and why I had felt so irritated by the idea of a double date, "I can see if he knows anywhere new for us to try if you want? On Saturday he took me to this lovely little Italian place, it couldn't have been more perfect."

"No, I know the perfect place to go!" I said defensively, without thinking, as I had no fucking clue where was a good place for a double date and I didn't know why I had suddenly had the urge to lie and say I did. She looked a bit surprised by my outburst but then seemed to shake it off and gave me a small smile as she opened her boot for her bags.

"Oh, well that's great then! I'll just tell him to pick me up at seven and we will meet you guys there if you just text me the name of the place. See you tomorrow, Harry." She smiled at me and left me standing at the back of my own car, not moving as I watched her pull out and drive away. Shit. I'd dropped myself in it this time.

@Bunnyboo
Thank you so much for reading! Writing is my dream and I am obsessed with these characters and their stories so it's so important to me that it is told the right way... At the time when I started writing this it was a distraction because I was in a tough situation and I needed something to take my mind off of it. Now, I am in such a good place and I can see that this story hasn't been written the way that it should have been - the way I want it to be read and I don't want to spoil the ending on a sub-par version. Thank you for being so patient, I appreciate it so much and I hope that I do their story justice in my retelling.
