Only You

Chapter 1

"Urgh have you seen Harry today?" my best friend said excitedly, as she took a seat next to me in the study room. I rolled my eyes and didn't look up from the copy of Hamlet that I was annotating neatly, but she didn't seem to notice my lack of interest and carried on speaking anyway.

"He's got his hair in a bun, at first I didn't think I was a fan, but if anyone can pull it off, it's him." She carried on babbling away and I tuned her out to focus on my work.

I love Taylor, I really do, but sometimes I can't help but think she's focusing on all the wrong things. We're a month into year 13, the last year of high school and we're sending off our applications to universities to get onto courses that will dictate the rest of our lives, and she wants to talk about boys. No, thanks. The time for that is once I've actually made it to Durham on a music course.

I was pulled from my thoughts by Taylor waving her hand in front of my face. I shook my head, blinked and tried to refocus on what she had been saying.

"Are you even listening?" She looked hurt and I instantly felt a pang of guilt, I knew I could be too obsessed with my work and it didn't always make me behave like a great friend.

"Sorry Tay, I'm just tired that's all... what were you saying about Harry?" I forced myself to try and look genuinely interested.

Before she had time to speak again though, the door swung open and banged against the wall next to it as a group of people sauntered in, carrying their lunches, laughing and joking and generally ruining what was supposedly meant to be a peaceful atmosphere for work. I internally groaned when I saw who it was, while I felt Taylor tense with excitement next to me.

The guy at the front was Liam Payne. Most of the classes that I had had with him over the course of our high school careers, he had seemed really quiet, well that was until he got around his friends. It was as if someone had charged his batteries and he became one of the loudest (and in my opinion, most obnoxious) people in the room. He was followed by Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, who had seemed to share the role of class clown between them since Niall had moved from Ireland at the beginning of our GCSE's, although I just found them disruptive and annoying. Louis walked in with a cheeky smirk as he spoke to Niall about something they were undoubtedly planning for later on. Then there was Harry Styles.

He walked in at the back of the group with his arm draped around his girlfriend, a small half smile dancing on his lips as she was speaking to him about something or another. Harry was the most popular guy in school and most of the girls were falling at his feet, quietly begging for him and Kendall to break up because they thought he was so cute (I'm pretty sure that if I wasn't preserving her dignity for her, Taylor would have fallen into that category as well). Kendall was thick as two planks and the pair of them seemed to be just wasting their time, and everyone else's for that matter.

"You see!" Taylor whispered excitedly, once Harry was seated a few tables away, perfectly angled for me to see the messy brown bun that was formed on the back of his head.

"Oh yeah, give it a few days and all the guys in school will have scraggly buns and unwashed hair, I mean, It's a great look!" I said sarcastically as I gave her an exaggerated smile and shook my head. She shook her head, clearly thinking I just didn't understand and turned away to pull her own books from her bag to start her own work. I turned back to my own work about to touch pen to paper when I noticed that someone was standing on the other side of the table and I could feel their eyes boring into me. I looked up and saw Kendall standing there, not smiling, looking confident as ever and clearly not happy with something.

"Who has a scraggly bun?" She asked matter of factly. I was taken aback for a second, I didn't know people actually confronted others outside of their heads, I definitely didn't.

"I'm sorry, what?" I was still kind of shocked that this was actually happening.

"I'm pretty sure you were just slagging off my boyfriend's hair, and I think if you're going to be a big girl and make comments behind people's backs, you should be prepared to say it to their faces." I felt my own face flushing red as she maintained eye contact, like this was some kind of sport for her, almost like she actually found this fun.

"Kenny, just leave it, I don't even know her." Harry hadn't even turned around and was still messing with one of the other guys he was sitting with at the table. She didn't move.

"Well?" She said expectantly. This clearly was not a rhetorical question, and she was going to wait for me to answer. Other people were starting to stop their own work to watch the exchange, and the noise was dying down as the awkwardness settled in.

"We're sorry!" Taylor suddenly squeaked out from beside me, her brow furrowed with worry as she looked between me, Kendall and Harry.

"There, now leave it." Harry spoke again with a sigh as he twisted in his chair, he just sounded bored more than anything but I could swear I saw sympathy in his eyes when he glanced over at me. Kendall looked back at him and then at me again.

"Not brave enough? Next time, keep your opinions to yourself unless you have the guts to stand by them." She flicked her hair over her shoulder and went and sat back down with Harry and the boys. The noise from their group resumed as well of the rest of the room as if the exchange had never even happened. Taylor and I sat there in disbelief glancing from eachother, over to the other group, and back again, absolutely lost for words.

@Bunnyboo
Thank you so much for reading! Writing is my dream and I am obsessed with these characters and their stories so it's so important to me that it is told the right way... At the time when I started writing this it was a distraction because I was in a tough situation and I needed something to take my mind off of it. Now, I am in such a good place and I can see that this story hasn't been written the way that it should have been - the way I want it to be read and I don't want to spoil the ending on a sub-par version. Thank you for being so patient, I appreciate it so much and I hope that I do their story justice in my retelling.
