Safe Haven

Chapter one

Branches cracking, leaves crunching, mud and water sloshing all beneath my feet, my heavy breathing, my heart beating out of my chest, and the adrenaline cursing through my veins are the only things that I can hear and see at the moment.

Well, besides my uncle, who is hot on my trail firing his gun at my backside, the bullets whizzing past my weak body.

I start slowing down from the lack of nutrients, and bad health. I knew this would happen if I tried to escape, I wasn’t going to make it, not before he caught me anyway.

Just as my feet are about to give out from running nearly three miles, I hear car horns. Faith and hope is restored to my body, I push through the fear, pain and tiredness.

Bullets shoot past me, closer to my body, he is getting closer, and he knows I’m getting closer.

I continue to run, keeping my eyes trained on the road appearing in front of me when a small drop in the earth appears, a jump over and keep pushing forward.

Happy with not falling I finally crack a smile, I’m finally free. In my moment of being happy, I miss another drop and tumble just as a bullet flew past my right bicep. My eyes growing wide, if hadn’t have fell, I would have shot in my lower back.

I sprint, taking deep breaths when I feel a fire erupt in my left calf. I scream in agonizing pain, falling merely twenty feet away from the only kind of civilization that I will ever be around for the rest of my damned life.

Tears spring from my eyes, the adrenaline quickly fading away and fear quickly creeping in. I open my eyes to find jay standing over me, smirking.

“Did you think you were going to leave me that quickly? Hmm? Those warning shots must have not gotten your attention.” He shakes his head, sweat rolling off of him, “It’s a shame I had to puncture my baby.”

I cringe in disgust. This was my life. Jay, is my uncle, well was I hate to think of him as family at this point in my life.

“You’re disgusting! I am your niece for god sakes!” I clench my teeth, seething in pain and anger.

He brings his foot to my wound and presses down. I groan in too much pain.

“Now, now, Weston is that anyway to treat people?” He smiles an evil, toothy grin and laughs. I whimper as he puts more of his weight on me.

“Stop, please! Dear God, make the pain go away.” I close my eyes, still lying upon the ground when I feel the pressure come off of me, to only feel the butt of his gun smashing into my face forcefully, knocking me out completely.
