Someone Like You

Chapter 5 - Shopping

After dreaming about brown curls and green eyes, I awoke with a jolt to the sounds of texts coming from my phone. I stared at my ceiling, hoping it was all a dream, before leaning over to look at my alarm clock on my right nightstand. 8:03 am. It’s too early. I groaned and moved my body into a stomach to bed position. I yawned before falling back asleep.

“Priscilla!” Charlotte shouted at the top of her lungs as she ran into my room with Vivienne and leapt onto me in my bed. The four poster bed shook and rattled as the two jumped and bounced on it, hoping to get me to wake up.

“What. Are. Ya’ll. Doing. Here.” I said emotionless. I turned my body to face them and sat up. As they spoke about buying me breakfast and how they wanted to go shopping for a party Vivienne’s brother was throwing, I rubbed my eyes.

“I really want to wear a blue dress. Since it’s apparently Caspian’s favorite color on his Instagram.” Charlotte chatted. Vivienne listened intently as Charlotte described the shoes she was going to pair with the outfit. I grabbed the McDonald’s bag from Vivienne and looked inside, seeing Egg McMuffins and hash browns. I grabbed a hash brown and began to munch on it while I got out of bed. Charlotte and Vivienne stopped talking for a moment and began to watch me grab my phone from my bag and head to the bathroom.
Turning around, I asked, “Do yall want to watch me poop?” I shook my head, laughing, and closed the bathroom door behind me.

As I finished off my hash brown and brushed my teeth, Vivienne knocked on the door. I opened up and saw she had a drink in her hand, “We got you a Sweet Tea, too.” she remarked as she handed it to me. I smiled and put the drink on my desk before returning to finish off my morning routine. I went to my closet to pull some black shorts and an off-the-shoulder top for the mall. I changed and headed out into my bedroom where my friends were still talking.

“What should I wear to your brother’s party, Vivienne?” I asked as I went to my vanity to put on some makeup.

“Honestly, I don’t know. It’s supposed to be like, really casual. Just look good for the boys.” Vivienne replied.

I rolled my eyes, “I wish Alex was here to hear you say that.” I laughed.

“When is he coming back from camp?” Charlotte asked as she laid down on my beanbag chair.

I put on the final touches to my eyebrows before turning in my office chair to face her. “I actually don’t know. A couple days ago, he said he was coming in a few weeks.” I shrugged before I went to grab a black Birkin from my closet and put my wallet in there. I pulled on some white sandals.

“Y'all ready?” I asked my friends.

“Yeah,” Vivienne said as she hopped off my bed. Charlotte followed.

I opened up my bedroom door and headed toward the stairs. “Who let you in?” I asked as we walked down the marble stairs. “Charles.” Charlotte replied, “He’d only let us in if we gave him a hash brown. Like brother like sister.” She laughed. I smiled and thought about the conversation the iconic brother-sister duo had last night. I sighed as I opened the front door and headed to the garage.

“One car or different cars?” Vivienne asked. I shrugged, “One car. We’ll save the planet that way.” Charlotte agreed.

I looked at my car and saw that it wasn’t blocked. “Guess we’ll take mine since ya’ll drove here.” I decided. We walked to my car and I held the button on my remote to start it. I unlocked it after it did so and went to sit in the driver’s seat. I looked at my phone as my friends sat down, scrolling through the messages from my friends to wake up. I rolled my eyes.

“Seriously?” I said as I showed them the texts. “We had to get you up somehow,” Vivienne remarked. I laughed as I put the car in reverse and headed out the driveway.
As we drove to the mall near the French Quarter, I turned on the radio. Neiked’s “Sexual” came on and I whipped to the beat when I stopped at a stoplight.

I looked over at my friends and saw that they were cringing. “Do you not like this song?” I asked intently as the light turned green. “No, we just don’t like your dancing.” Charlotte laughed. I looked over and smiled before saying, “Lies.”

I drove to The Shops at Canal Place, the only mall in New Orleans with good designers and Saks Fifth Avenue. I parked at the parking building after paying and we all headed into the mall.

“I need to take a picture of the sign for my snapchat, hold on,” I said to my friends as we walked in the entrance. I took out my phone and put the sign on my story. Charlotte rolled her eyes before we all headed in.

Looking around, Vivienne put a finger to her chin and asked, “Should I buy my brother a shirt from Vineyard Vines? We’re going boating in August.” I nodded. “Yeah, I need another shirt to sleep in anyways.” I said. We all headed to Vineyard Vines and fawned over the cute whale logo. I bought a men’s t-shirt with a whale on the back with a palm tree print. Vivienne bought a similar shirt, except it only said Vineyard Vines on the back.

“Okay, now let’s get our outfits for the party tomorrow!” Charlotte exclaimed as she headed out the store.

We walked towards the Neiman Marcus and headed inside. Neiman Marcus was a luxury store that carried almost anything luxe. I had found my homecoming dress there my sophomore year. Vivienne walked over to the Christian Louboutin section and gawked over the new shoes. "Dude," She said to me, "I need these." She held up a rose gold shoe with intricate pearl detailing. My jaw dropped. "Me, too," I replied as I walked over to look at the shoe.

Charlotte yelled for us from the Dior section, showing us a minimalist black dress. I looked at Vivienne and shook my head, "That's too simple." Vivienne agreed.

"I know. But, I could add some jazz to it and make it better." Charlotte said before turning to look at some more dresses. I looked around the store, thinking to myself. I don't know what I want. My stomach rumbled. I always get anxiety in the mall but I didn't know why. I looked at my phone before going to find an outfit for the party.

At the end of the shopping trip, I settled on a black silk slip dress from Alexander Wang to match the maroon Fenty Puma slides I was going to wear. Charlotte bought a yellow romper from BCBGMAXARIA while Vivienne got a simple dotted mini dress from Abercrombie.

Before going home, we decided to stop at Chick Fil A since we didn't know if there was going to be good food at the party. I drove in the drive-thru and ordered for us, sipping on my sweet tea as I drove out of the store.

I turned on the radio when I stopped at a stoplight and "rich white girls" by Mansionz came on. "This is such a good song," I exclaimed as the light turned green. I chewed on a waffle fry when we got to my house, parking next to Charlotte's rover. We all got out and grabbed the shopping bags from the trunk before we said goodbye.

I walked up to my front door as my friends headed inside their car. "See you at the party!" I yelled.

"Bye! Love you!" They yelled back.

I smiled as I opened up the door. "Hannah, I'm back!" I yelled as I made my way up one of the stairs.

"Priscilla!" I heard my mom call. I stopped in the hallway leading up to my room before going on the catwalk to peer down. I saw my mother sitting in the living room with my father. "Hey," I said. She looked up and gestured to my father, "Can you come down here, please?"

I dropped my stuff off in my room before I headed down. I plopped onto one of the burnt eggshell couches across from my parents and shrugged, "What's up?" I looked at my parents.

My mother looked at me with a worried face while my father sat with an annoyed look on his face. "Honey," my mom began, "What's wrong?" I put on a confused face, "What do you mean?" My father leaned forward and clasped his hands together. "First, you act cold to Tommy on the way to dinner. Then, you storm out of it for no reason. We're just trying to make sense of the situation." He said before turning to my mom. "What you did was very rude, not only to us but to the Westwoods." She said before shaking her head.

“I didn’t mean to be rude...” I trailed off. My dad looked at me before getting up to go to the kitchen. He returned with a glass of wine before sitting down next to my mom and took a sip of it. “Go on.” He said. “I wasn’t trying to be rude. I’ve just been going through some stuff. I haven’t seen Alex since the end of the school year and I’ve just been feeling a little lonely.” I shook my head. My mom looked puzzled, “But, you’ve been out with your friends all the time!” I rolled my eyes. Parents never really get it. “Mom, just because I hang out with my friends doesn’t mean I can’t be lonely. I just haven’t been myself lately.” I replied, “I didn’t mean to be mean to the Westwoods. I swear.” My dad shook his head and put his arm around my mom. “Okay. Go on to your room then.” He said as he stood up.

“Okay. By the way, I’m going to a party at Vivienne’s house tonight.” I quickly said before running up the stairs. I wasn’t really asking them for approval. I smiled as I went into my room and started to get ready for the party.
