Dear Life.

After | 04

Wind blew gently, too softly - but not gentle enough to make him calm down. He ran a hand through his unruly hair, almost laughing at his situation, feeling the déjà vu. But unlike last time, he was alone. Completely. Utterly.

He heard something, like a crunching of a leaf beneath a person's feet as they stumbled in the dark. He could have been mistaken, and labelling it as an animal, he stood up to leave.

"Harry?"

The voice was as soft as the crunching of leaf he had heard, but I was nearer, more clear. He turned around, and there stood the last person he wanted to see; Jane.

Or Jeannette, or Jenny, or Jennifer, or Josephine and whatever name he had called her instead of her actual name. To be honest, he liked messing with her.

"What are you doing here?"

His voice was gruff and low, like he was angry at a child. He sounded ruder than he had intended to, but he couldn't find it in himself to care. He just couldn't. Not even when he saw the expression on his face.

"I - uh - I just wanted to make sure everything's fine. I mean, you weren't looking alright back there. Are you?"

In a heartbeat he snapped, "Why do you care?"

Jane's mouth sealed shut, partly at his tone and partly at his question. Why did she care, anyway.

"I was worried."

Her confession caught him off guard. Scoffing at the absurdity, he sat down again.

"Worried." He said, shaking his head. "For me. Why?"

He looked up at where she stood. Even in the dark, she could feel his eyes burning through her soul, making her for the first time conscious about herself.

"I don't know." She told him, honest. "And I guess I shouldn't be. I mean, you can't even get my name right. So why should I be worried about the person who doesn't even know my name, huh? Right, I shouldn't."

Her small rant got Harry to crack a smile for the first time, impressed at her for lighting up the mood a bit. He chuckled, patting the space next to him for her to sit down, which she did.

"So...." She started after a moment of silence. He was looking down but at her voice, he looked up. Jane wasn't sure if she should ask the question or not, so she remained quiet, making her sigh as he too thought about what to say.

"I guess," he cleared her throat, looking everywhere but at her, before his eyes fell on a tree, remaining there, "those raspberry cupcakes, they brought back certain memories that I had been trying to bury deep with her. They were her favourite."

"Her?"

He nodded, turning towards her with almost an expressionless face. Jane couldn't make out most of it in the dim light, but she knew he was trying hard not to cry.

"The girl I loved. Rather, still love. Emerson."

His eyes glided over the sky adorned with clusters of stars and unknown galaxies. Some twinkled brightly while other just appeared dull. He hoped, he wished. And maybe, just maybe, his wishes were heard.

He was aware of eyes watching him with curiosity burning deep within them. He smiled, though overall his features were sad. Jane wondered about what he must be thinking but she knew better than to ask, knowing he was better off alone. It's what he wanted. She sighed, and slowly got up from the bench.

She didn't know where Emerson was, if they were still together or not. She didn't know whether the love was unrequited or skinny, but she knew that he was terribly hurting and needed to be alone.

"You'll be okay."

Though she had originally wanted to say that as a question, instead it left her mouth as a statement. He nodded without taking his eyes off of the sky, the smile on his face becoming more genuine, wider.

"I know."

Jane turned just as those words left his mouth. Each step she took increased the distance between them not only physically but spiritually as well. She shivered against the cold wind as it blew. She thought, her mind travelling to galaxies and stars and what's beyond that. She thought, and although she didn't knew what she was doing, she hoped.

Perhaps he would have left. Perhaps he would be still sitting there. He would be okay, he would be hurt. She didn't know for sure, but what she hoped was neither of the above.

Harry would be still there, mouth in an overwhelmingly beautiful smile. Eyes wide and hoping would be fixed on the sky. They would roam over arrays and clusters of stars. And maybe, a tiny bit of him would wonder if people actually existed there. He would wonder about the life up there, beyond the clouds, the sky, the space. Or maybe he wouldn't wonder. Maybe he wouldn't pay a second thought to all of it while he would just simply observe the stars as they would twinkle and glitter beneath his gaze.

He would smile as his eyes would settle upon a seemingly bright star. It wouldn't be much brighter than any other, but it would still catch his attention. It would appear brighter than the other stars to him. It would be what he was looking for years and years.

Then he would smile, satisfied, heart beating contently in his chest. He would get up, and return to his house. He would sleep soundly, wake up happily and would go contently with his life.

Because he would have found what he was searching for.

Or maybe he wouldn't have, but Jane hoped that he could.

He does! The next chapter will reveal a little bit more about what they both feel about each other. Enerson's or not, we'll see. Thank you x

@ontheedge
Ah! Thank you so much love for enjoying this story. I'll update soon. And no, I haven't seen Dunkirk yet, though I wish to see it soon. I randomly found the picture on Internet and used it. Have you seen Dunkirk yet?

So I'm kind of in love with this story. Harry is just so moody and Jane is so sassy about it. I'm going to join everyone else I think the necklace is Emerson's. Great update and I'll wait patiently for the next one :)

P.S. The pic of Harry in your banner is from Dunkirk have you seen it yet?

So Harry admits he can't stop thinking about Jane! It was so secret that he was intrigued with her in some way but it reveals a lot more now that he's admitted. I'm just going to make a wild guess and say that the necklace belongs to Emerson. Thanks for the update! Can't wait for more!
