Dear Life.

After | 01

The bells somehow jingled loudly in the chaotic atmosphere. The commotion created by the people wasn't affected by the signals - a way to tell the attendees to take their seats. Voices, garbled noises and murmurs of conversations floated through the air - which seemed just as bright with contrast to the reason of this gathering. Jane stood in a corner, watching the mass of people that had gathered in amazement.

"Sick!"

Her brother exclaimed, eyes widening in horror as nerves started to creep up his spine. Jane turned his head towards him whose face had gone pale at the sight of the people crowding the room.

"Having second thoughts?"

Her voice wasn't as loud as the people surrounding them however it was loud enough for him to hear. Jane had guessed it right - Right now, his blood was pumping with second doubts. He was bound to have them sooner or later. It was always an instinct to man. He nodded while she let a small smile unfurl across her face.

"I didn't expect this much people to come."

She chuckled, resting her elbow on his shoulder, ruffling up his gelled-back hair in the process.

"Don't worry about that, Matty. As soon as Des walks through that aisle, all of that stuff will disappear like air from your head."

Matty chuckled, winding an arm through her waist and hugging her sideways. He softly kissed her temple as she sighed in his embrace. "I'm so happy for you, Tarzan."

Matty smiled at her childhood name for him. As a child, a wild one might I add, Matty had untamed, as wild as his behaviour like hair. Always so unruly and that led to her name of him: Tarzan. He smiled sadly, thinking of how fast time flies. Today he was about to get married while it felt like just yesterday when he pushed an angry and a small Jane in the water puddle; through which the seed of their friendship much stronger than the bond they had as siblings grew.

"I'm happy, too." He whispered, resting his head against hers, watching the ever growing crowd of people. Jane got distracted, wondering idly for a second if the number of chairs set was adequate for the amount of people there. She was pulled away from her thoughts when she felt Matty's voice slicing through the air.

"Have you seen Des yet, Jane?"

He tried to be as nonchalant about it as possible. He looked around with his chin up, shoulders wide and expression like he didn't care about it. But in all honesty, Jane saw right through it. She knew his nerves were eating him alive. She smirked slightly, nudging him with his shoulder.

"You'll see her soon enough. And I haven't-"

"Janey! Matty! There you are!"

A more than frantic Maisie, Jane's mother, came bustling through the door. Looking at her, she couldn't decide who was more anxious for the wedding; Matty or her mother. She halted in front of the both and took deep breath to calm herself down.

"Everything alright, Ma?"

"Yes," She breathed out a sigh, "The priest is calling you. It's time." She grinned but there was unexpressed sadness hidden deep beneath her eyes. There was happiness. There was love. There was pride. And there was longing that could only be fulfilled by a certain person who wasn't there; their father.

Matty's mother had died while giving birth to him. His father then married Maisie and had Jane after a year. Even though, Matty wasn't her own, she never made him feel like it. Unfortunately, for all of them, their father died three years ago.

"Let's go, Matty. Janey, will you check up on Des?"

Jane retreated back to the place where Des was. It was a small room and was used as a dressing room. She lightly knocked on the door. "Des? Can I come in?"

She heard a mumble and some shuffling before the door opened. She spotted Des right away with the same anxiety and stress and worry strewn over her features that she had seen on the faces of her mother and brother. But she wasn't alone. There was another person besides her.

"Hi Jane."

Des all but mumbled as she stood up and covered her in a hug. Not caring about the dress or hair one bit, Jane hugged her back as tightly as she had. Both retreated back as Des came to stand beside her.

"Harry, this is Jane, Matty's sister. Jane, this is Harry. He's giving me away today."

The first thing she noticed about him was his wild hair, wilder than Matty's. He had striking green eyes that seemed to be staring deep in her soul. Just the way the air felt around him, Jane knew that he was a pretty closed-up person.

"Nice to meet you." He spoke and she nodded in acknowledgement. With a small smile, she turned to Jane.

"Are you ready to go?"

Des nodded before hesitating and giving her a small smile. Jane sensed it, and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze before dropping it. Harry came by her other side. It seemed like the two were closer than anything for Des relaxed some as he looped his arm around hers. It was something like Matty and Jane had. And just by it, Jane knew that Harry had a large part in her life.

"Ready?"

Harry breathed as Des readjusted her dress and picked up the bouquet of white roses provided to her. She smiled and nodded. Jane saw Harry pull Des into his arms and figured they would need some private time. She went back and saw all of the people seated. The commotion had died down altogether, which meant people knew that it was time to start. Going to the front row, she sat beside her mother, who was silently crying.

"Happy or sad tears?"

Jane pulled her mother in a hug as she sniffled. She chuckled, wiping away at her mascara running down her cheek. "Happy, of course."

She smiled as her eyes roamed around the place. The stage was beautifully decorated. In the centre stood Matty, fidgeting slightly. His face was natural though, but Jane knew that while standing there, his nerves were killing him. His hands were folded behind his back and she could see them slightly twitch. His eyes met her and she smiled at him, which he returned quite nervously.

"
Don't be nervous," She mouthed at him, "Everything's gonna be fine."

He smiled at her, but his attention soon focused on the girl walking the isle. She didn't know where to look and whose face looked more in-love. Matty and Des, both had tears running down their cheek. The sight was magnificently beautiful, but equally emotional. She could hear her mother's cries and wondered if a love like theirs was meant for her or waiting for her here somehow.

Harry handed Des to Matty as the ceremony began. Much to her surprise, Harry came and took the seat beside her all the while not taking his eyes off the scene playing in front of them. Jane couldn't help but observe him. Like a close book waiting to be read, he surely had the pages held too tightly.

All too soon, the bride and the groom both said their vows. Her mother's cries had subsided. It was then when she decided to speak.

"Love is a beautiful thing. Don't you think?"

She turned towards Harry. She didn't expect him to answer or acknowledge her or something but what came out of his mouth left her speechless nonetheless.

"Love's tragic."

Matty's lips closed over Des' as they sealed their promises with something as beautiful as a kiss. Jane looked at Harry, his jaw tense with unknown emotion, hands balled in to fists and when he finally looked at her, she saw his cold exterior supported by equally cold eyes, something she hadn't seen before.

"Why do you say that?"

He shook his head, an almost sad smile telling her he's reminiscing something pulled up on his lips. "Trust me," he spoke with confidence and longing hidden deep in his words.

"Love isn't as dear as people make it out to be."

So I'm kind of in love with this story. Harry is just so moody and Jane is so sassy about it. I'm going to join everyone else I think the necklace is Emerson's. Great update and I'll wait patiently for the next one :)

P.S. The pic of Harry in your banner is from Dunkirk have you seen it yet?

So Harry admits he can't stop thinking about Jane! It was so secret that he was intrigued with her in some way but it reveals a lot more now that he's admitted. I'm just going to make a wild guess and say that the necklace belongs to Emerson. Thanks for the update! Can't wait for more!
